Three-way tie for SEMO; Mules football schedule
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- For the second straight year, the Charleston Bluejays kept Poplar Bluff from winning a share of the SEMO Conference title.
Jerry Carter and Gregory Tucker connected on consecutive 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter, part of a 10 for 17 long-range shooting performance that lifted Charleston to a 63-57 win at Peters Gym.
"We shot it well tonight," Charleston coach Danny Farmer said. "We came out, we took our looks and we put 'em in. We're capable of doing that.
"We've been waiting for that to happen the whole year."
Poplar Bluff's loss kept the Mules from earning a four-way split of the conference title, which went to Sikeston, New Madrid County Central and Notre Dame. It's the first three-team tie since 1964 and only the second time ever in the 51-year history of the league. There has never been a four-way split.
Charleston (10-12) and Poplar Bluff (18-6) finished tied for second at 4-3 a year after the Bluejays earned a share of the title by beating the Mules.
"They shot the ball extremely well," Mules coach Lamont Frazier said. "The further we go out and guard them, the further they'd back up. That's hard to defend."
Deonte Jones connected on four 3s, finishing with 18 points while Tucker added 16 points for Charleston, which has won five of its last six heading into a Saturday matchup with state-ranked Kennett.
Jay Raulston led the Mules with 19 points and 13 rebounds while Eljie Johnson and Greg Coble each added 10 points.
There were 12 lead changes and six ties with neither team leading by more than six at any time.

For the boys, Central-Jackson should be a good one considering the previous meeting. I'm not sure what Bluff will face in the semifinal with Seckman-Northwest coming down.
The semifinals in Class 5 might be better than Class 4, but if the seeds hold up in Dexter (both boys and girls) that might make for a good night as well.
