Class 5 District 1 final preview
Poplar Bluff and Jackson meet for the MSHSAA Class 5 District 1 boys championship tonight at Peters Gym while the Lady Mules face Cape Central in the girls' final. Here's a quick preview for tonight:
LADY TIGERS vs. LADY MULES
Tipoff: 6 p.m. A lot has changed in the year since these two teams met in the final, which Poplar Bluff won 54-37. This time around, Cape Central (17-7) is the top seed, having beaten the Lady Mules 48-46 back on Jan. 28 at Central. Sadie Pittman scored 22 points to lead the Lady Tigers, getting a steal and bucket in the final seconds for the win. Pittman scored 18 in the semifinal Wednesday, a 53-41 win over Seckman, while Chelsea Pannier added 13. Poplar Bluff (17-8) advanced with a 45-42 win over Jackson in which Ruthie Johnson hit a last-second 3 to finish with a game-high 17 points. Johnson and Dennisha Rice combined for 22 points in the last meeting with Central and 26 on Wednesday. The thing to watch for in this matchup is which team controls the boards.
MULES vs. INDIANS
Tipoff: 7:30 p.m. This is a rematch from Jan. 19 when Poplar Bluff won 56-43 at Peters Gym. That game saw the Mules jump out to a 10-point halftime lead as Jackson shot 23 percent in the first half. Henrie Williams led Jackson with 23 points in that game while Kyle Keith and Taylor Williams went scoreless. The Mules hit half their shots that night, out-rebounded Jackson 33-26 and turned the ball over 14 times (which is under their average). The thing to watch for in this matchup is tempo. Both teams played the previous night with Jackson needing 8 extra minutes and the Mules running up and down the floor in a high-scoring game (most points scored and allowed this season).
Should be two very good games and worth $4.
