Brian Rosener is the keeper of the Semoball Cup which is presented to the school with the most successful season. It is based on a formula that takes into account the combined winning percentage of all sports teams plus bonus points for advancement in postseason play for both teams and individuals. The bonus points are divided by the number of teams a school fields. Rosener has been the sports editor for the Daily American Republic in Poplar Bluff, Mo. since December 2001. He was born and raised in St. Louis, where he attended Lindbergh High School and Webster University. He is married to Jennifer, a Poplar Bluff native, has a son Jack and a dog named Satchel who stands in for his @semoballBrian photo.

Jackson knocked off top-seeded Festus 6-3 Monday, advancing to the championship game. I'll post more later tonight.

Saturday:

Rain has kept away from Strenfel Memorial Field for the most part. Poplar Bluff AD Jim Brown said at 8 a.m. the opening round of the MSHSAA Class 4 District 1 tournament is on schedule.

Play ball!

First pitch for the North County-Sikeston game was 9:37 a.m., it's 60 degrees. There's a light rain but the field is in good shape.

The Raiders scored a run in the top of the first but left the bases loaded. Sikston goes in order. (END OF 1: North County 1, Sikeston 0)

Rain delay at 9:54, a heavy rain has hit. ... teams are back on the field after an 18-minute delay.

North County adds another run on a walk and two errors to go up 2-0. (END OF 2: North County 2, Sikeston 0)

Raiders add another run on a bases-loaded walk but leave three stranded, lead 3-0 heading to the bottom of the third. (END OF 3: NC 3, SIK 0)

After five innings, NC 3, SIK 0.

North County added three more in the top of the sixth, up 6-0. ... Heading to the bottom of the seventh, North County leads 6-0.

Sikeston scores a run, down 6-1 with one out in the seventh. ...

FINAL: North County wins 6-2.

Game 2: Festus (17-7) vs. Poplar Bluff (8-12)

Teams are taking infield now and the game should start before 12:45.

Festus wins 3-0.

Festus senior pitcher Ryan Yuengel threw a 3-hit shutout, striking out eight and taking a no-hitter into the fifth to stymie the Mules, who haven't won a playoff game since 2005.

Game 3: Farmington vs. DeSoto

DeSoto scored four runs in the first but Farmington has scored three in the third and tied the game here in the fourth, 4-4.

Still tied in the seventh. ... DeSoto gets a leadoff double. Runner misses a sign and steals third then scores on a single down the third-base line, 5-4 DeSoto.

Farmington gets a leadoff single. ... but leave him stranded at second.

DeSoto gets the second upset of the day, 5-4.

Game 4: Cape Central vs. Jackson

The teams are warming up now and should start about 5:40ish. I'll be shooting photos so will be away for a few innings.

Jackson leads 1-0 in the fifth. ... I'm headed back to the office to start on the paper. Jeff Breer will have a complete story from this game later tonight.

SOCCER UPDATE

Just got word that Poplar Bluff's soccer game for Monday has been pushed back to Tuesday because the first-round game between Fox and Seckman will not be played today. Cape Central and Northwest are still going to play today, however, but Jackson's semifinal will be Tuesday.

Second straight year North County upset the Bulldogs in the first round. We'll see if the Mules can top what they did against Festus last year (the Tigers won on a walk-off homer in the 9th).
You can answer this much later . . . Do you know how many innings a pitcher can pitch in a district? Is there a limit of 10?

From the MSHSAA rule book:

Q. PITCHING LIMITATIONS: A pitcher shall not be allowed to pitch in more than 10 innings on any given day or during any consecutive three day period. This regulation shall apply to all games played during the season and the failure to comply with this rule will result in the automatic forfeiture of the game in which the violation occurred. A pitcher of record for any part of an inning shall count as a full inning. See Rule 3-1-2. Question: If a pitcher throws 3 innings on Tuesday, 4 innings on Wednesday how many innings would he have available on Thursday? Answer: 3 innings. If he pitched his 3 allowable on Thursday how many innings would he have available on Friday? Answer: 3 innings for Friday. Note: Should weather interrupt the "10 innings in 3 days cycle" you still would count the three consecutive days. A day off may increase the available innings.

R. PLAYER LIMITATIONS: No player may participate in a total number of innings for the season that exceeds nine times the number of games (exclusive of tournaments) played by the higher team on which he plays. For a game in which the score is tied at the end of seven innings, the extra innings shall be considered as an extension of the seventh inning. (MSHSAA By-Law 346)

No player may participate in a total number of inning that exceeds nine times the total number of games. Who was the genius that thoughts that up? Am I understanding this right? That means if a team played 25 games the pitcher would be limited to no more than 175 innings. Nobody is going to pitch 175 innings. Why make that rule? Am I reading this right? Crader?

You're reading it wrong.

R. PLAYER LIMITATIONS: No player may participate in a total number of innings for the season that exceeds nine times the number of games (exclusive of tournaments)

Note that this counts for PLAYERS, not PITCHERS. Basically this rule is so kids dont play a full season of JV and Varsity.

The pitching rule is 10 innnings for every 3 consecutive days.

Sikeston played thier C game today. Weather didn't help, but NC had to play in the same conditions. I wish they would have went out playing their best, but that's baseaball for you.

Good luck to all remaining teams, I hope Cape or Jackson wins it. Great year bulldogs, 17-8 is something to be proud of.

Sikeston should be proud. I have to agree with trucks - not a very positive coach. They need someone excited about baseball. He coaches football, basketball and baseball at some point you are going to get burned out.

I have to agree. While Self has done a great job, I think it is time for a change. With a better coach, I can't see Sikeston losing first round in districts, with the team that we had.

However, coaching isnt everything. They just played below their potential. Good luck to Jackson. I beleive I called it in an earlier post that Jackson would win it.
