Vernon qualifies for US Amateur
ST. LOUIS -- Carr Vernon survived the heat and a tough course to qualify Monday for U.S. Amateur.
The 16-year-old was the only player to break par in one of his two rounds at Bellerive Country Club but missed medalist honors by a stroke. He became the fifth golfer from Poplar Bluff to qualify for the U.S. Amateur and first since Ben Godwin made his second appearance in 2007.
Vernon finished a grueling 36-hole day at 4-over 144 while Skip Berkmeyer of St. Louis earned medalist honors at 143. Mark Knecht of Paducah, Ky. won the other spot in the Amateur in a playoff with Scott Hovis of Jefferson City after the two tied at 145.
At one point Monday, Vernon was 3-under par on a course that hosted the 1965 U.S. Open and the 1992 PGA Championship.
Vernon beat Berkmeyer by 2 strokes to win the Ozark Invitational this past April.
