Sikeston's Trey Lewis wins Carr Trophy
POPLAR BLUFF -- Another year, another Carr Trophy winner for the Sikeston Bulldogs.
Trey Lewis picked up the award as the most outstanding football player in Southeast Missouri at the 65th annual Poplar Bluff Letter Club Gridiron Banquet on Wednesday night.
Lewis became the fourth Bulldog to win the award, given annually since 1979, following Jaqualin Wiggins last season.
Sikeston finished 13-1, reaching the semifinal of the MSHSAA Class 4 playoffs and winning the SEMO North for the second straight season with an unbeaten record.
Lewis was one of eight Sikeston players to be honored on the All-SEMO North Conference team and also picked up the scoring award while fellow senior Corey Porter earned Lineman of the Year for the North.
Lewis, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior, produced nearly 3,000 yards of total offense, rushing for 1,411 yards and 24 touchdowns while throwing for 1,546 yards and 16 touchdown passes to just five interceptions. He completed nearly 70 percent of his passes. He was also named to the All-SEMO North defensive team as a defensive back, intercepting four passes, leading the Bulldogs in tipped passes while also making 20 solo tackles.
Dexter's Aaron Mace and Hayti's Darnell Clay were named Linemen of the Year in the Central and South.
Cape Central coach Rich Payne was named the North's Coach of the Year while Nathan Morgan of Caruthersville earned the Central award and Hayti's David Gilmore was named the top coach in the South.
The Cape Central Tigers were presented with the Sportsmanship Award.
Herb Marshall and Dennis Quertermous were presented with a special award for service to the SEMO Conference which was named for Sam Giambelluca, who started the award banquet.
Former college football coach Jackie Sherrill was the guest speaker at the event held at the Poplar Bluff Student Center. Sherrill was 180-120-4 in 26 seasons as a head coach and played for Bear Bryant at the University of Alabama, winning two national championships.

Since the coaches vote on the team and I wasn't at the meeting, I can't tell you why or what reason. It happens all the time but doesn't take away from his season.
Marshall was on the all-region team as voted on by the media, but we've been known to leave off a good player or two from time to time.
Derland Moore, who was at the banquet last night, played in the NFL and at Oklahoma but wasn't named to the All-SEMO first team when he played at Poplar Bluff.
