PB Showdown Day 2
POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- The Hurricane were golden from 3-point range early Friday night as Jonesboro (Ark.) advanced to the championship game of the 26th annual Poplar Bluff Showdown by beating the defending champions.
Marquise Pointer hit four first-quarter 3s as Jonesboro connected on 6-of-9 shots behind the arc to build a double-digit lead in a 71-41 win over Booker T. Washington of Memphis.
The Golden Hurricane (10-2) will face two-time Showdown champions Liberty Tech (7-3) in the championship game at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
Tech beat the host Mules 59-55 in the other semifinal Friday night.
Pointer finished with 22 points, hitting 4-of-6 shots from 3-point range to lead Jonesboro. Kahron Ross added 16 points, including a pair of 3s, while Tony White and Aaron Washington each chipped in 10.
Jonesboro scored 26 points off turnovers as White led with six steals to go with six rebounds.
BTW was led by Zarmalus Griffin's 19 points.
Jonesboro led 22-12 after the first quarter and 33-23 at halftime by hitting 7-of-12 3-point shots. BTW closed to within seven to start the second half but Jonesboro put together a 13-4 run to finish the quarter then won the fourth 19-7.
Liberty Tech (Tenn.) 59, Poplar Bluff 55
Kendal Walker and Landon Simmons each connected on a pair of fourth-quarter 3s to lift the Crusaders into the championship game for a third time.
Simmons finished with a game-high 20 points for Tech (7-3) while Tyler Taylor chipped in a double-double off the bench with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Daniel Hill had 10 assists, six points, five rebounds and three steals.
Poplar Bluff (7-3) missed a chance to reach the title game for the first time since 2004 when the host Mules won their only title.
Tech won consecutive Showdown titles in 2008-09.
Stacy Gipson led Poplar Bluff with 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Brandon Stuckenschneider added 10 points off the bench.
Tech, which hit 14-of-21 shots from the field in the second half, trailed 42-41 heading into the fourth before scoring eight straight to take command.
The Mules pulled within four with 1:43 left but missed a pair of one-and-ones at the free-throw line to pull closer. Hill sank two free throws but Poplar Bluff scored just one basket over the final 2:53.
Maplewood-RH 64, Forrest City 53
Kahlid Hagens scored 29 points to lead the Blue Devils over Forrest City in a consolation semifinal Friday night.
Hagens hit 10-of-19 shots from the field while Colten Brooks and Corey Frazier each chipped in 11 for MRH (10-3).
Trey Thompson led Forrest City (5-5) with 13 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, four blocks and four steals. Treveontae Coulter added 12 points for the Mustangs, who turned the ball over 21 times.
Brooks led with four steals while Aaron Collins and Aaron Spudlich each had three.
There were six lead changes and four ties. MRH led 31-28 at halftime and pushed its lead to seven at the end of the third. A 10-4 run to start the fourth gave the Blue Devils their largest lead at 56-43.
Moss Point 51, Memphis Kirby 47
Devin Booker scored 30 points to go with 12 rebounds and five steals for the Tigers.
Moss Point (6-9) jumped out to a 24-9 lead but Kirby rallied, pulling even at 32 in the third quarter before Moss Point scored the next six points.
Kirby's Darren Franklin hit a 3 with 45 seconds to play that cut the margin to 41-44 but Booker sank 7-of-8 free throws over the final 95 seconds to ice the game.
Darren Franklin, D'Ante Isabel and Adrial Miller each scored 10 points for the Cougars (4-7).
Derrick McMillan had nine rebounds and six points for Moss Point while Joshua McCarty added seven points.

Poplar Bluff swept the 3-point and slam dunk contests Friday morning. Ryan Brittingham won the shooting contest while Stacy Gipson dunked home the title.
