2013 PB Showdown Final Day
South Side of Jackson (Tenn.) won the 27th annual Poplar Bluff Showdown in double-overtime, 106-98, Saturday night at Peters Gym.
Forrest City's R.J. Glasper hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to force a second overtime but South Side scored the next nine points to win the title in its first appearance.
Jaylen Barford sank a free throw with 19 seconds left in regulation to tie it for South Side, which rallied from a 10-point fourth-quarer deficit.
Joseph Tripp's two free throws with 1:02 left in regulation put Forrest City ahead 78-77.
Glasper, who scored 37 points for the Mustangs, got a steal with 38 seconds left but Barford was fouled on a rebound off a missed field goal by Forrest City, which was 4-for-13 from the field in the fourth quarter.
Barford missed his first free throw but made the second to tie the game. The South Side senior scored 36 points to go with seven rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks.
A last-second steal by South Side forced the first overtime.
Forrest City's Trey Thompson had 13 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with 1:36 left in regulation on an offensive foul. Terion Smith, who also fouled out, scored 13 points and had 12 rebounds.
Chris McNeal added 30 points and nine assists for South Side while Malik Hicks scored 25 and had 15 rebounds, five steals and four blocks.
Barford and McNeal each played 40 minutes.
The Hawks scored the first six points of the first overtime and led 86-82 with 47 seconds left.
Glasper answered with a 3 before Barford hit two free throws with 31 seconds left. After the teams exchanged free throws, Glasper hit a 3 to tie it while McNeal missed a last-second shot.
McNeal hit two free throws to start the second overtime, Hicks followed with a block and Barford scored before Hicks got a steal and layin for a 95-89 lead just 48 seconds after tipoff.
The margin grew to nine but Glasper's 3 with 2:17 left cut the deficit to five but the Mustangs hit just 3-of-13 shots from the field during the second overtime.
Forrest City scored 23 points off turnovers and hit 10-of-22 shots from 3-point range but shot 36.7 percent in the second half from closer in.
The teams combined for 52 points in the first quarer and the Mustangs took a 35-24 lead with 5:46 left in the first half and led 48-40 at halftime.
South Side pulled even at 54 with 4:25 left in the third quarter but trailed 67-62 to start the fourth.
Forrest City's lead grew to 10 with 7:13 left but South Side answered with a 13-2 run, taking the lead with 3:01 left.
It's the third time in 27 years the championship game needed overtime but the first to need a second.
Douglas of Oklahoma City won the 1988 title 66-62 in overtime while the 1998 final went to overtime before Christian County (Ky.) won 66-62. There have been three triple-overtime games in the Showdown while the last overtime game came in the first round of the 2009 tournament.

Fifth Place
Malik Stockdale scored 22 points and Donte Simpson added 18 to lead Union City to a 70-65 win over Booker T. Washington of Memphis.
Stockdale hit 7-of-10 shots from the field, including all three of his 3-pointers, to go with six rebounds while Simpson sank 9-of-10 free throws including two with 35 seconds left for an 8-point lead.
Tyree Beason led BTW with 17 points while Jermarcus Franklin had 16 points, seven assists and three steals. Angelo Smith added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Warriors, who finished fourth last year.
Union City led 61-57 before Will Sisco sank two free throws with 1:31 left. Jamie Hyde added two more free throws following a turnover by the Warriors.
There were five lead changes and four ties while the largest lead was eight by Union City in the closing minute.
Union City led 22-18 after one quarter and by the same margin at halftime.

Seventh Place
Kendell Walker hit two free throws with 11.7 seconds left to give Liberty Tech of Jackson (Tenn.) a 59-56 win over Soldan.
The Crusaders took a 1-point lead on Donte Wilkes' basket in the paint and Soldan missed a one-and-one opportunity before Terry Beauregard scored off a pass from a driving Wilkes with 1:22 to play.
Soldan turned the ball over on an inbound miscue but stole it back and pulled within a point on Ronald Clower's free throws. After the teams traded baskets, Walker was sent to the line where the senior hit both shots.
Cristian Simms' 3-point attempt in the final second got stuck in the rim but the Tigers got possession with the arrow only to come up empty on a second attempt.
Tech, which led by as many as 11, took a 22-19 lead after the first quarter and 33-24 at halftime.
Beauregard led Tech with 19 points and eight rebounds while David Murry had nine assists. Walker finished with 11 points while Wilkes had nine for the Crusaders, who placed second last year.
Cortlen Brooks had 11 points and 10 rebounds while Jervonta Jones had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers.
