2014 PB Showdown - Day 1
Welcome to Peters Gym in Poplar Bluff, Mo. for the opening round of the 28th annual Poplar Bluff Showdown.

Monday's Games

Union City (Tenn.) 62, Forrest City (Ark.) 51
The opening round of the 28th Poplar Bluff Showdown was tough on teams from Arkansas and Memphis.
Tyler Dorris sank the second of two free throws with 15 seconds remaining and Grenada (Miss.) survived two shots in the closing seconds to edge Springdale (Ark.) Har-Ber 48-47 Monday.
Memphis teams Booker T. Washington and Overton each lost along with Forrest City (Ark.), last year's Showdown runner-up.
CBC of St. Louis beat Overton 66-40 and will face Union City (Tenn.), a 62-51 winner against Forrest City, in the 8:30 p.m. semifinal Tuesday.
The host Mules will play Grenada in a rematch of the third place game last year won by the host.
The Chargers, which placed fourth at the Showdown before reaching the 6A state title game last season, saw their late 5-point lead vanish when Har-Ber's Mason Cline tied it with 45 seconds to play.
Tereke Eckwood nearly came away with a steal out of a trap but the Har-Ber senior fouled Dorris in the process. The Grenada senior missed his first free throw but sank the second for a 48-47 lead.
Cline got a good look at a 15-foot jumper and Mason McNee missed a rushed putback at the buzzer as the Wildcats came up empty and fell in their Showdown debut.
Cline led Har-Ber (8-2) with 15 points, Avery Benson chipped in 13 while Eckwood added 10 points. McNee had a tournament-high 16 rebounds to go with five points off the bench.
Trevious Spencer led Grenada (7-2) with 16 points. Effernee Taylor had five points, five steals and four rebounds.
There were 11 lead changes and four ties with Har-Ber taking a 28-21 lead into halftime.
Grenada put together a 9-2 run to finish the third quarter ahead 35-32.
Eckwood's steal but Har-Ber ahead 40-39 with 4:41 to play but Grenada charged back. Josh Everette scored in transition and Dorris followed a Har-Ber miss with two free throws before taking a charge. Spencer followed with a baseline jumper for a 46-41 lead with 2:05 to play.
Har-Ber rallied with two free throws by Eckwood, a post bucket by McNee before Cline kissed the glass to tie it at 47. Grenada missed a one-and-one and split two free throws at the line during the stretch.
UNION CITY 62, FORREST CITY 51
Malik Stockdale scored a tournament-high 26 points to with 12 rebounds, leading the Golden Tornadoes into the semifinals.
Union City (12-1) used a 14-4 run in the second quarter to lead 47-25 at halftime.
Forrest City (3-6) cut a 13-point second-half deficit to 43-40 with 6 1/2 minutes to play but Union City answered with a three-point play from Parker Steward, Stockdale's 3 and a three-point play following an offensive rebound.
Marcus Deberry chipped in 19 points while Steward added 11 for Union City, which placed fifth at the Showdown last season after winning the 2007 title.
R.J. Glasper Jr. scored 17 to lead the Mustangs while Trajan Norment added 15 points for the defending state champions.
CBC 66, OVERTON 40
Kenny Lesley led a balanced offense for the defending Class 5 champion in Missouri.
Lesley's double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds paced CBC (5-3). Nick Wheeler added 13 points, Christian Willis scored 12 and Jordan Barnes scored all 11 of his points in the first half.
The Cadets opened with a 10-3 run and led 22-10 heading into the second quarter. Overton (11-4) rallied to within six after a putback dunk by Jaret Gassett with 4:45 left in the half but Barnes hit a 3 at the buzzer for a 33-21 lead.
CBC led 45-33 heading into the fourth before pulling away led by Sam Orf's seven points.
Keith Wilson and Jerry Hurt each scored nine points to lead Overton, which last came to Poplar Bluff in 2010.
POPLAR BLUFF 59, BTW 51
The Mules opened the fourth quarter with a 10-2 run, holding BTW without a field goal over the first 4 minutes of the final frame.
Chris Stocks scored 25 points to lead the Mules (7-2), who are looking for their first Showdown final appearance since winning their only title in 2004. Abiodun Francis chipped in 12 points off the bench while Willie Lucas scored 10 for Poplar Bluff.
Tyree Beason scored 20 to lead the Warriors but he didn't have a field goal over the final 15 1/2 minutes. Chauncy Blakely added 14 points, including a game-tying bucket to end the third quarter.

With 4:55 left, Mules lead 49-43 but BTW is at the line. Both teams in bonus.
After 3, Mules and BTW are tied at 41.
At half, Poplar Bluff leads BTW 26-25
Poplar Bluff has cut BTW lead to 22-20 with 2:13 left in half. Warriors with the ball coming out of a timeout.
BTW jumps out to a 9-3 lead midway through the opening quarter. Poplar Bluff got back within 9-7 and trails 17-11.

CBC up 54-40 with 4:39 left.
Heading into fourth quarter, CBC leads 45-33.
Overton cut deficit to 6 with 4:45 left in half but a 3 by Jordan Barnes at the buzzer put CBC up 33-21 at the break.
CBC comes out dunking and running. Jumps out to a 10-3 lead. Takes 22-10 advantage into second half on Overton.

Har-Ber's Cline misses a 15-foot jumper and Mason McNee misses a rushed putback at the buzzer as Grenada hangs on to win.
