HISTORY LESSON:
This was the first time since 2004 that host Poplar Bluff played in the final. The Mules were 1-6 all-time playing for the championship.
Poplar Bluff beat Little Rock Parkview 67-37 in the final of the 2004 tournament. Tyler Hansbrough, Ben Hansbrough and Brad Chronister were named to the all-tournament team that year. Union City lost in the semifinal 50-48 in the semifinal.
In 2003, Poplar Bluff lost to Parkview 51-43 in the final. The Mules went on to win the first of their two state titles the following March.
In 2000, Poplar Bluff lost to Vashon 75-46.
The 1994 Mules lost 72-59 to Booker T. Washington of Tulsa in the final.
In 1992, Louisville (Ky.) Pleasure Ridge Park beat Poplar Bluff 75-57 in the final after losing 46-34 to Little Rock McClellan in 1991 final.
The very first Showdown final featured the Mules losing to Louisville Central 69-63. Central beat Kansas City Paseo featuring Anthony Peeler 87-81 in the semifinal.
NO CONTROVERSY
While a tournament in California banned a team for wearing "I can't breathe" warm-up shirts recently, it was not an issue at the Showdown. Overton came out prior to its opening-round game Monday wearing the black shirts with the quote that have been worn by NBA and college teams. The student-athletes chose to wear the shirts for the first time Monday, coach John Anderson said. Prior to their game Wednesday, the Memphis school wore Poplar Bluff Showdown shirts that each school receives for playing in the tournament. Anderson said it was the team's decision.
