This is getting ugly

Posted Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at 8:01 PM

Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling ripped Barry Bonds in a radio interview today. (entire interview here - the riff on Bonds starts around the 12 minute mark)

He [Bonds] admitted he used steroids. There's no gray area," Schilling said on WEEI. "He [Bonds] admitted cheating on his wife, cheating on taxes and cheating on the game."

For the record, as the article makes clear, and despite numerous rumors and allegations, Bonds has never admitted steroid use.

He did reportedly fail an amphetamine test last season.

Back in 2000, Schilling had a different view of Bonds.

"Barry Bonds is a first-ballot Hall of Famer. I'd vote for him every day of the week and twice on Sundays, but when he retires, he's still going to be the biggest (butt) -- who ever lived. Ask his teammates. Ask anyone on their team or in their clubhouse. He is who he is."

Bonds recently called Schilling "two-faced."

The Giants and the Red Sox face off next month during interleague play.

Update Schilling backs off - "irresponsible and wrong to say what I did."

Top players under 25

SI's Tom Verducci compiles his list of the top 10 baseball players under the age of 25. Interestingly, six of the top 10 are in the National League. The NL is getting better.

I unfortunately don't think people will ever forget McGwire's tragic infamy just because he became such a face of the game and feel good figure during the great home run race with Sosa. Maybe another younger generation will forget but if you say steroids there are definately two figures that come to mind who are exact polar opposites in personality, Mark and Barry. Both of their stories are pretty sad but when that gets me down and I need a giggle I just thing about how big of moron Palmeiro looked after staring Congress right in the face and ferociously denying his steroid use and failing a test not long after.

I really don't think McGwire cares. All he wants is his privacy. Maybe he will get his privacy if he actually fought to be elected to the Hall. Once he is in, people will forget. Until then, people will continue to judge him.

When and if Bonds or Sosa gets in, so should McGwire.

That's like saying Bill Buckner's strategy for being remembered was to misplay Mookie Wilson's grounder. McGwire took the whole thing way to nonchalantly, like it was a post game media conference where he was a big hero. When it got stuck back up his nose he didn't know what to do. And still doesn't.

Maybe he should he become a complete recluse?

That strategy didn't work for Mac.

I think once Bonds retires alot of the negativity will fade away. Regardless of any substance that may have slightly enhanced his performance Bonds numbers are so ridiculously better than any other active player you could get two HOF caliber careers out of them.

Anyway is Bonds really that much more hated than Ted Williams was? Both were egocentric jerks who were despised by almost all the media & baseball fans across the nation. Bonds may have used some roids, but there is absolutely no doubt that Williams used some serious amphetamines in his day (at least as a fighter pilot there can be no doubt he used them, as a baseball player given Williams drive to become the best hitter possible I can't see him giving up the edge in reaction time but thats certainly debatable). At least Bonds was willing to help his team win by contributing defensively & on the basepaths while Williams never seemed to care about giving any effort unless he was at the plate.

Maybe Bonds just needs join the Marines for a bit, taking up flying fishing and wait until everybody eventually forgets what an *** he was and reveres him as an elder statesmen of the game.

If Barry doesn't get in it won't be because of the roids, it'll be because he's a jacka$$ to the media and always has been. McGwire was a gimme first ballot hall of famer but handled his congressional hearing so poorly he single handedly washed those chances down the tube. Palmeiro who was the only one who handled himself legitimately well enough to have a shot but proved to be a bold faced liar and down went his chances. Really if anyone had been called into the situation those players were put into they'd be screwed whether it be Clemens, Ripken, Pujols, Griffey, Nolan Ryan. The fact is over the last 20 years God knows how many of our favorite players or the elite echelon of the league was on atleast something that most leagues would have banned. To me it doesn't matter anymore, the scaredness of the numbers is already tarnished, I just watch and love the game for what it is. To me whether Bonds is dirty or not I don't really care, most of them are as far as I'm concerned, I just don't like him because he's been a jerk for the past 20 years.

Mac didn't get voted into the Hall because many people thought he used steroids. It has never been proven that he has taken them too.

Maybe we should withhold the homerun record from Bonds because so many people think he has used steroids.

Sentence #1: "What happened to innocent until proven guilty?" Sentence #4: "...it is baseball's fault for everyone using them anyways (sic)".

Am I missing something?

What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Until Barry Bonds is convicted of using steroids then everyone should lay off. Yeah he might look like he has taken them, but looks can be deceiving. Next, it is baseball's fault for everyone using them anyways. Why would you not ever drug test for them? They were almost daring players to use them. They just liked the results that were being produced so nothing was done. Finally, its not like Big Mac was banned from the hall of fame he just didn't get voted in like a lot of other good players. He will eventually get in so would everyone just relax.

Honest, I thought it was flaxseed oil!!

That's hilarious. Schilling: "You took steroids, cheated on your wife, cheated on taxes and cheated on the game". Bonds: "Hey, I never took steroids!" That's right out of the 3 Stooges.

Anybody with a brain stem can see that Bonds used steroids. If Mac is kept out of the Hall, then so should Bonds and Sosa. Simple as that.
