Here's one deal they'll never stop talking about

Would you make this trade?

Your 27-year old pitcher is coming off an 18-8 season with a 2.99 ERA.

The other team is dangling a 25-year old outfielder with a career batting average of .257.

The Cardinals and Cubs made that trade 43-years ago this month. The principals were, of course, pitcher Ernie Broglio and outfielder Lou Brock.

The LA Times caught up with Broglio today , who'll turn 72 later this year.

"You spend five years with an organization, you really like the guys you're playing with and then all of a sudden you get traded, it takes you a while to bounce back," says Broglio, adding that he was suffering from elbow pain at the time of the trade, a detail the Cardinals kept quiet. "I don't know if I ever really did bounce back from it. They're winning pennants and you had a chance to be on that ballclub."

Broglio was demoted to the minors by the Cubs in July of 1966. He never returned to the big leagues.

The most money he ever made in pro baseball? Twenty-five thousand dollars.

Bashing Barton

From one end of the trade spectrum to the other. In December of 2004, the Cardinals not only gave up pitchers Dan Haren and Kiko Calero to acquire Mark Mulder. They also threw in prospect Daric Barton.

Barton is now tearing up Triple-A for Oakland -- hitting over .500 this month. The blogger over at Athletics Nation wonders if it's time to call him up.

Interleague play

"Major League Baseball drew a record total of 8,795,939 fans to the 252 dates of Interleague Play this year, eclipsing the previous mark set last season."

The AL won the season series -- 137-115. That ties for the third most dominant performance by either league since AL and NL teams starting playing on a regular basis.
