Happy old-timers day!Posted Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at 8:26 AM
It's old-timers day in Major League Baseball. Seven pitchers 40 years of age or older will take the mound today. That's a record. The previous mark was set….last week.
One of those geezers headed to the mound tonight is 41-year old Tom Glavine. He'll face Anthony Reyes in the third game of the Cards-Mets series. Glavine is four away from career victory 300. The 0-9 Reyes hasn't recorded a regular season victory since this game - back in early September.
Depending on your perspective, one of the most enjoyable or annoying aspects of New York media is how all events get exaggerated -- good or bad. When the Yankees or Mets do something well -- they let you know it's the greatest ever. Conversely, when an athlete doesn't perform up to par, they are quick to condemn. So it was with great glee that I read the New York tabloids and their reports of last night's 5-3 Cards victory in extra innings. Here's how the New York Post started a sentence describing Mets reliever Scott Schoeneweis, who gave up the game-winning home run to Cards rookie Brendan Ryan. "Other than Schoeneweis' putrid effort…" Putrid. If the St. Louis media ever did that to a Cardinals player, Tony La Russa would hit the roof. In New York, it's just another day at the office. The Daily News has a nice article on Ryan, noting that the rookie had 17 text messages within 30 minutes of the games end. The Post-Dispatch says Ryan will be sent back to Triple-A Memphis as soon as David Eckstein is activated from the disabled list. I hope he gets the chance to come back up and compete for the second base job later this year. He's already made more big plays than Adam Kennedy has all season.
Darling on Duncan Watched the Cards-Mets game last night on DirecTV with the Mets announcing crew. Keith Hernandez and Ron Darling provide the color analysis for the Mets broadcasts and they are quite good. Probably the best out-of-market local broadcast I've heard all season (with the permanent exception of Vin Scully and Dodgers games). Darling, the former Mets pitcher, was effusive in his praise of Cardinals pitching Dave Duncan. Darling finished his career under La Russa and Duncan out in Oakland. "He really had a thought process of how to get hitters out," Darling said of Duncan. "I never got that from Mel Stottlemyre." Should Barry be there? Hall-of-Famers Tony Gwynn and Cal Ripken weigh in on Barry Bonds and the All-Star Game. Speaking of the All-Star Game, I didn't realize Russa had selected his coaches. They'll be Bruce Bochy from the Giants and Willie Randolph from the Mets. How many people remember Randolph as a Cardinals coach back in 1990? Rock-et! Rocke-et! Rock-et! Roger Clemens…in the year 2057. |
