If one goes, does the other stay? (and vice versa)

Is the status of pitcher Anthony Reyes a proxy for the future of St. Louis manager Tony La Russa?
That's one of the conclusions I'm left pondering after reading this. Specifically, if La Russa and pitching coach Dave Duncan stick around after this season, does that mean Reyes definitely goes elsewhere? And of course, the opposite also applies here. If the organization keeps the righthander around for 2008, does that mean La Russa and Duncan are on the way out?
Reyes is expected to be sent down to Triple-A today to make room for Braden Looper.
In his bid to remain in the rotation, Reyes has apparently lost out to Todd Wellemeyer, prompting Bernie Miklasz to ask this:
Part of me says that's a little harsh. Reyes is a young pitcher with a 0-10 record, a bloated ERA, and options left. Why not send him back down?
But the other side is equally, probably more, compelling. What's the good in sending him back to the minor leagues? What more can he possibly prove in Triple-A?
This is a philosophical battle that extends well beyond Reyes. He's become the symbol of the infighting going on inside the Cardinals organization.
Reyes vs. La Russa. I'll bet one of these guys won't be in a Cards uniform in 2008. Where would you place your bet?
Postscript: "Players and front-office types would be surprised if La Russa comes back."
If that's the case, I hope Reyes gets a chance under the new regime. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

I think TRL would have left after last year had the Cardinals not made the playoffs. There were times as they struggled down the stretch that he was almost begging to get out. But it was all but impossible to leave after winning a World Series. Unless the Cards make a hell of a run in the 2nd half of the season and make the playoff, and then do well there, I don't see LaRussa wanting to come back to St. Louis.
Man, We have over 1/2 of a season left in 2007. Let's get focused on winning some ball games and getting back to the World Series. Mike, you're usually pretty positive and focused. I like that. Let guys like "here's to you never played a game in your life" Bernie and Morrissy do the whine and negitive speculate dance.
I wish the Cards would send Reyes as the PTBNL in the trade for Maroth.. I think Reyes would make a nice middle relief in a different system!! LOL!!
Hmmm... lemme see.
Do I want TLR, the only active coach to win more than 3,000 games; who led the Cardinals to several Division Titles, 2 Pennants, and 1 World Series Championship to leave St. Louis? Oh yeah, he has also been Manager of the Year several times and help nurture some of the greatest ball players to ever wear a Cardinal uniform.
With TLR you have Duncan - one of the most successful pitching coaches in the National League. The man who helped Chris Carpenter recover from a serious surgery that could have ended his career, Suppan become one of the most durable pitchers in the League, and help convert relievers to know some success in the Majors.
Would I trade them for Reyes? The man who has only pitched 3 great games in his Cardinal career, who consistently defies management, does not pitch smart, and is a career minor leaguer.
I think I would stay with Duncan and TLR. Do I think they will stay? Only if Jocketty stays. With the leadership of the Cardinals, I don't think that is possible.
Matt, you often make a lot of solid points on the blog but sometimes your rah rah, cards are always the best attitude makes me giggle. Suppan was already a solid innings eater before he even came to the Cardinals being the number one starter in Kansas City (not saying that means much) for several years. Under Duncan Suppan never once pitched over 200 innings but his consistency over the year was an aspect that the Cardinals rotation this year is missing.
Yeah... you are right. :) But if you lose TLR, you lose Duncan. And Duncan can help rebuild careers. Unfortunately for us, he cannot work with the younguns.
But honestly...why would you choose Reyes over the TLR/Jocketty/Duncan trio? It doesn't make an ounce of sense.
Cap, you are right. I do have a "rah rah attitude" for the Cards, but I am not a big fan of certain players and the DeWitt dictatorship. And just like everyone else, I think the Cards are playing crappy. But, I think that will change once the DL clears up.
Would I choose one player over an entire managment and exec group? probably not unless you're talking about Griffey, Bonds or Mays in their prime and an ownership group like David Glass in KC.
