"Tony La Russa is available"

Posted Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at 9:33 PM

A Cincinnati writer wants the Reds to get manager Tony La Russa and GM Walt Jocketty.

Tony La Russa is available.

Yes, Tony La Russa.

By all accounts, he's done in St. Louis after this year. La Russa is said to be burned out on the Cardinals, after 12 highly successful seasons. His contract is up. Give him a new one. Here.

Walt Jocketty, the Cards' GM, is feeling the same. (Reds owner Bob) Castellini likes Jocketty very much. Jocketty's deal is up after next year. A package deal is not out of the question. You are as big as you dream. Maybe something could be arranged.

You can read the whole thing here.

Looks like this Cincinnati writer is dreaming. He is working on speculation, no solid facts. Unless I hear otherwise (from the lips of the men involved), this writer and others are living a pipe dream or nightmare.

I'm sure that La Russa will be available however I'd wager on at least a one year "retirement". He'd be 63 and has constantly been a manager since 1979. If he is ever going to take a year or two off to spend his millions while he can still enjoy it next year is the year.

So the Reds might have a shot if they still need a manager for the 2009 or 2010 season.

I don't know about LaRussa and retirement. I think if he sits out a year, he will probably never come back. I don't see him as being someone who thinks he needs or wants a break from baseball. It consumes him.
