So, Albert - does he stay or go?

Update: "Of course I was disappointed I didn't get in the game, but it's not a big deal," Pujols said. "People are making a big deal about it, saying I don't respect Tony or that he disrespected me. Are you kidding?"

Judging by the meltdown in message board land, Cardinals fans haven't been this upset since Don Denkinger was a World Series umpire.

To play or not to play Albert Pujols was the question. Manager Tony La Russa's answer was no.

In an All-Star game featuring a St. Louis manager, the only St. Louis player watched the entire affair from the dugout.

Pujols' absence became obvious in the bottom of the 9th. The National League had started to rally, a two-run homer from Alfonso Soriano cut the American League lead to one run. The NL then loaded the bases with two outs before Phillies center fielder Aaron Rowand lifted a flyball to end the game.

Tony's explanation -- he was saving Albert in case the game went to extra innings.

Albert's response? He was "angry" according to the AP report.

"It's the All-Star game. He can do what he wants," Pujols said Tuesday night. "He does whatever he wants. If I wasn't expecting to play, I wouldn't have come up here."

The San Francisco Chronicle had a little more nuanced version of the events.

It was hard to tell if Pujols was upset with La Russa or not. Shortly after the game he said light-heartedly, "Maybe he was saving me for next year's game." Later, however, when a reporter mentioned that La Russa told reporters his reasoning, Pujols snapped, "Did he explain why? If he did, I don't have to explain anything."

There are a couple of ways of looking at this -- one would be the narrow focus on the game and the proper strategy. The other would be the larger picture of the relationship between a manager and his best player.

As for the game strategy, La Russa offered this reasoning.

"Once we lost (Miguel) Cabrera and (Freddy) Sanchez, he was the guy we were going to use to protect ourselves in case we kept playing because of Albert's versatility," La Russa said. "I think we had the right guy at bat."

Somebody help me out here -- I'm not following this. How was Sanchez "lost"? The box score shows him as the third baseman at the end of the game.

The play-by-play summary shows he made an assist on the last out in the top of the 9th.

Was he hurt?

I suppose Sanchez was lost from the bench but as an active player, he was eligible to play wherever La Russa wanted to put him.

Pujols could have pinch-hit for Rowand and played left field (or third base and let Sanchez play left). Soriano, who was playing left field, could have slid over to center for extra innings.

Rowand had struck out in his previous at-bat. With the bases loaded and the game on the line, how could he not give Pujols a chance?

The larger issue here is the relationship between Tony and Albert, and what, if any, lasting impact this will have.

La Russa has endured player feuds before. He and Scott Rolen didn't see eye-to-eye in last year's playoffs and the Cardinals ended up World Series champs.

But a manager in post-season play has a lot more leverage than one who's 40-45 and in third place.

I think it's all up to Albert. If he continues to feud with his manager, and the Cardinals struggle the rest of the year, it's the final nail in the coffin. La Russa's St. Louis career will be over. Why pick a fight with your best player at the All-Star Game?

But if Albert takes out his punishment on opposing teams and the Cardinals turn things around, this will end up as some silly dust-up that's quickly forgotten.

Whether he knows it or not, the Cardinals manager just put his fate in the hands of his first baseman.

So, Albert -- does he stay or does he go?

MLB.com has a more detailed quote behind La Russa's reasoning.

"As soon as Cabrera got hurt, the guy who [had been] our versatile, protection player was Freddy Sanchez, and he became our [backup] third baseman," La Russa said. "If you look at the guys who are left, who's the guy who has that versatility? It's Albert Pujols. We're required to be ready to play extra innings. So where are you going to use Albert? You can't use him. You've got to protect him."

Albert is apparently so versatile, he can't be used.

LaRussa needs to go! This along with his drunk driving episode in Florida is the reasoon its time for a change.

The only reason LaRussa got a "pass" on his off-field antics was because the Cardinals were the defending world champions.

But now with the team struggling, I can see the owners willing to make a change.

...how quickly they forget...

LaRussa has such a bizarre way of managing. Granted, he wins a lot of ball games, but he is so frustrating to watch. I think I could physically feel my blood boiling after seeing Young, Lee, Hardy, Hudson, and Rowand get shots at the plate but no Pujols.

I have generally supported TLR in his management trenure at STL, but last night he had a brain ****...

At work this morning someone commented that LaRussa is a consummate strategist and wonders if, since surely even he realizes he's on thin ice in St. Louis, he did this to further strain relations with Pujols. That way, if he's not rehired he can claim that it was Pujols pulling rank, not something he did wrong. I don't know if I buy such convoluted thinking, but it's something to think about.

I just can't imagine really that TLR and Pujols didn't have this conversation before the game.."Hey, I'm going to save you and I'd really not like to use you." ... "Ok Skip, whatever you say.."

So what is either one supposed to say considering the circumstances. Had it been 5-2 with 2 outs and no one on, no one says a word and everyone goes their separate ways.. I'm not even sure Pujols was even on the bench in the 9th.. Fox never showed him if he was.. they sure showed Putz and TLR.. I can't imagine that they wouldn't be showing a reaction shot.. It's not like Pujols was going to say.. hey I really didn't want to play guys.. I think people are making a mountain out of dirt..

Mike Mitchell's response:
I thought I read in one of the game reports that Pujols was off stretching and getting ready somewhere. It could have been a reference to earlier in the game, though.

As a Cards fan, here is my problem with not getting Pujols in the game; he was our only representative. Had the Cards had 2 or 3 players in the game, this may not have been such an issue. Regardless of whether Rowand was a capable batter or not, as a Cards fan, I want to see my team represented. I don't always watch the entire ASG, but I kept watching, wating for a chance to see our one representative get a chance to play and maybe do something special. I understand TLR's reasoning for holding Pujols just in case the game went to extra's but, you have to make it there first. I kept waiting in the 9th inning, and could not believe everytime they showed the on deck circle and no Pujols. Then when Rowand came up with bases loaded and 2 out in the bottom of the ninth, I just knew that we weren't going to have a chance to see a Cardinal player in the game. You knew that the game was going to end one way or the other with that at bat. I have never really been one to put much stock in the ASG, because it is played differently than a team would play a regular game and that it is played as an exhibition, but what is the point of making sure that every team has at least one representative, if that player never makes it into the game?? Thanks for keeping me up late for nothing Tony!

Tony's theory of "saving" Albert for extra innings makes no sense to me. Bottom of the ninth, two outs, bases loaded...What low-pecentage scenario was Tony playing for that would achieve a tie to throw it into extra innings. Base hit scores two...walk off with the victory, make an out and it's over. Albert should have been the man at the plate.

I do wonder how many times since the managers of the two WS teams represented the coaches of the ASG that the team who won the WS the previous year, had no one play in the ASG? That would never happen under a Yankee manager..lol..

I won't say at this time it is time for RaLosea to go...but...it is the bottom of the ninth...he has two strikes against him...and no balls.

I think it is interesting that Pujols sits out one ASG and all of the sudden we are taking sides. In the grand scheme of a baseball season, the ASG is a mosquito on a mountain.

If Pujols and TLR have a strained relationship because of a game that really has no direct impact on their postseason. If the Cards make the WS again, Tony may be kicking himself.

But Albert is a Christian man who champions forgiveness. If someone is struggling, it may be TLR.

Either way, TLR is not making many friends in St. Louis. But then again, he never has had many friends. Just a bunch of people who are trying to get Whitey to come out of retirement.

Whether or not he stays next season, I think we are seeing the beginning of the end of the TLR era - one of the most successful eras in Cardinal history. Even the Whitey fans should respect that.

I can't imagine the outrage that Cardinal "fans" would have had if Tony had put Pujols at third base. Would have been calling him stupid and saying he's risking injury. Some people are never happy and need something to complain about
