Ankiel called upPosted Thursday, August 9, 2007, at 1:46 PM
Rick Ankiel, last seen in St. Louis as a pitcher, will now return as an outfielder. The Cardinals have promoted him from their Triple-A roster in Memphis.
The 28-year-old Ankiel had 32 home runs for the Memphis Redbirds, tops in the Pacific Coast League. He'll be in the starting lineup tonight. There's a roster move to come. Some interesting stuff going on behind the scenes. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

Whoooohooooo...here comes another Division Title!
Not an easy match-up for him tonight with Young on the hill.
Any truth to the rumor ESPN will be cutting away to show his at bats?
On a more serious note, do they plan to start him in right or put him in center and move Edmonds to right as La Russa has mentioned?
Miklasz is reporting there is scuttlebutt that Spiezio will be the player removed from 25-man roster, one way or the other.
Spiez was put on the restricted list. Rumors have it that he and Hancock were quite close and he has had trouble dealing.
On a local note, the Capahas are playing a team from Santa Barbara tonight. On that team is the Cardinals' 4th round pick, Kyle Russell. With an Aug. 15 deadline to sign, negotiations with Russell are supposedly really heating up. Russell lead college baseball with 28 HRs this year. Lets hope Walt and the boys get this done.

Ankiel will be a platoon player at best in St. Louis this season. He strikes out a lot and does not walk much. It may help him to bat in front of Pujols. But Ankiel will not be the "final piece" that helps the Cardinals climb the ladder.
What a lineup:
Eckstein
Ankiel
Pujols
Duncan
Rolen
Edmunds
Encarnacion (2b)
Molina
It's in the bag.
Pitch a lefty? Ludwick, Taguchi, Encarnacion.
Patch a righty? Duncan, Edmunds, Ankiel.
What an outfield!!!
That HR by Ankiel gave me goosebumps...What a moment for a true cardinal fan!
