The Mulder option

Posted Tuesday, August 21, 2007, at 8:13 AM

Quote of the day: Manager Tony La Russa on the health of Scott Rolen.

"When he gets to the park tomorrow, we'll see how he feels. If he needs to bang one, we'll give him one."

OK.

Of all the numbers following the Cardinals 6-4 victory over the Cubs on Monday, it's this one that stands out to me. St. Louis is looking at playing 35 games in the season's last 34 days (that would include a makeup of Sunday's game against Chicago).

With such a brutal schedule, that creates a need in the starting rotation. As good as Looper, Pineiro, Reyes, Wainwright and Wells have been in recent weeks, they're going to need some help in the final month.

How soon does Mark Mulder get a start in the big leagues? The lefty's second rehab start is scheduled for tonight. With one or maybe two more minor league starts after this one, Mulder becomes an option in early September.

Update: Four innings and one unearned run for Mulder.

It will be interesting to see how La Russa and Dave Duncan play this one. They could turn to Brad Thompson or even Todd Wellemeyer, once he returns from the D.L., to fill the void down the stretch.

They could also look to Memphis. The rosters expand in September but if any those guys had much promise, they would already be in St. Louis.

There are four pitchers in the Memphis rotation with at least 20 starts this season. Randy Keisler has the lowest ERA -- 4.53. Of course, the Cardinals have already seen Keisler in St. Louis this season. No need for a curtain call.

I'm sure the Cardinals are anxious to get Mulder back and see what he can do. A few weeks ago, many thought they would have that opportunity without the glare of a pennant race.

Now they could be looking at turning the ball over to a pitcher they haven't seen in the big leagues since last August and asking him to win a game with the division on the line.

How crazy is that?

But when you're three games under .500, only three games out of first place, and have a former pitcher hitting home runs and starting in the outfield, you know it's been a crazy season.

41 games to go and the playoffs odds have climbed to 11%, almost 20% when you consider how the team is currently performing.

Play ball.

They might as well shelf him for the season and bring him back fresh and healthy with Carpenter and see how 2008 goes.

Use Thompson, Wellemeyer, or Keisler in place of Mulder? Yeah right. As erratic that Mulder has been in the last couple of years, I would trust him long before I put the ball in these guys' hands. Then again we have a team turned Braden Pooper into a starting pitcher. It turns out that pigs can fly!

Apart of me doesn't want the Cardinals to get into the postseason. If we do happen to go all the way again (which is not likely), I don't think I can stand hearing people on this blog, the StL Post-Dispatch and East Coast Lovin' ESPN saying that the Cardinals didn't deserve to win what they did. I wonder if they would say the same about the Yanks since they have been playing relatively poor this year. Or even the Twins who always find a way to barely make the playoffs. Probably not.

Let the Cardinal bashing begin. Then again, it may remind someone that baseball (and life) actually takes place in between the coasts!

At first I wasn't sure that I wanted to see Mulder pitch again this year.

Now that they finally have some consistently good pitching, I wondered how throwing Mulder into the rotation would affect whatever fragile chemistry the team has got going recently. But with the remaining schedule someone is going to have step in at some point. Might as well be MM.

When is Carp gonna be ready to pitch again? I assumed it was going to be late next season - if at all. Doesn't his surgery usually require 1+year(s) recovery and rehab. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Speezio and Miles have pitched this year . Why not throw Ankiel in the rotation too ?

Ankiel is NEVER going to see a pitching mound again.

Libra7, they are hopeful of Carpenter's return late next season. I wouldn't be surprised if they use him out of the bullpen for a while, as they did Morris after his TJ surgery.

Mulder has made real progress. He's scheduled to make two more re-hab starts.

They are expecting Carp to be back after the All Star break in 2008.I say more like september 2008 or April 2009.As far as Mulder I think it would be best to keep him in Memphis for the rest of the season and bring him back in April.

The Cards are done for this season,as much as I hate to say it.I think the Cubs are going to take the central and the Mets are going to the show.
