Rolen rumors will be with us all winter long

A rumored Scott Rolen to Minnesota deal was shot down almost as quickly as it surfaced. But expect trade talks involving the Cardinals third baseman to continue all winter and into the spring if he's still around.

Yes, I'm aware of Rolen's injury history and his big bucks no-trade clause contract. But consider the following.

  • The Cardinals have something like $99 million in salary commitments for next season already in place (Rolen is $12 million of that total). Even if forced to eat a portion of his contract, trading Rolen gives the team some additional financial flexibility for 2008 and beyond. Scott is under contract through 2010.

  • The Cardinals no longer deny the rift between the third baseman and manager Tony La Russa. "Bill (DeWitt), Tony and I are trying to resolve this from within," new GM John Mozeliak told the Post-Dispatch earlier this week. "If for some reason it doesn't work, we'll pursue alternatives."

  • Beat writer Joe Strauss went even further on Wednesday, saying he "no longer believe his (Rolen's) relationship with TLR can be salvaged."

And one day later, the Rolen rumors begin anew. The timing is probably early. A deal makes more sense in March or April than November or December. Potential trade partners can evaluate Rolen's health in spring training before deciding to pull the trigger. Rolen's no-trade clause brings additional complications.

Regardless of whether he gets dealt or not, the idea has gone from unthinkable to plausible. And unless or until he's dealt, the rumors will continue to fly.

Again...if the Cards were to get rid of Rolen, then who would play 3rd? With the way TLR juggled the lineup last year, he may even play Eck at 3rd. Eck can barely throw from short to 1st. Imagine him throwing from 3rd to 1st.

If the Cards were dumb enough to trade Rolen, they would have to find a team desperate enough to overpay Rolen. As of right now, the Cards are the only desperate team I see.

No way would Eck play third. If Rolen was traded they would have to have a 3rd baseman in return. Worst case scenario would be to move Pujols back over to third and plug somebody else at first. Personally, I don't see the Cards trading Rolen. His value is nowhere near what it once was and I think we're stuck with him. Thing is, he's a tremendous player but the Cards knew about his injury history when they got him so this shouldn't be a shock. Same goes with Carpenter. Great players, but they hardly ever play.

Rolen played in over 150 games in 4 of his six games in philly, what kind of history are you talking about?

He had two years in Philly where he played 112 and 128 games. That's injury prone in my eyes. That is a lot of time missed.

Well its a good thing you arent in the front office because if you eliminate all the players that have been injured twice in their career you won't have much.

Not all players miss the amount of action Rolen has. He has a history of injury problems. I'm not saying I would eliminate Rolen before that trade, but I would've been leery. I had fears of it at the time, thinking that he needed to stay healthy. My fears came true. Same thing with Carpenter. He had a great year in St. Loo but I knew it wouldn't last.

With Rolen gone, just slide Brendan Ryan over there. I don't know if there is a big bat 3rd baseman on the market (whose not name ARod) that they could get so the Ryan at 3rd would be logical. Pujols aint moving. He's THE MAN and I doubt he's willing to change positions now that he is accustomed to where he's at.

First off there is no way that the Cardinals are going to even consider picking Eck up out of Free agency, we have last the last of Eck in St. Louis. The Yankees have rumored to have interested in Scott Rolen, a trade like this could really help the Cardinals pick up some good pitching. Also Miguel Cabrera would work out great for St. Louis but looking at the bigger picture of things I don't think Florida would make that trade because of the fact that they don't want to spend that much money on a veteran third baseman. And really you can't rule out ARod! A long shot? Yes, but think about the middle of the Cardinals line up if they acquired ARod. That would be a dangerous line up!

What makes you think the Yankees would trade for Rolen when Cabrera is available? I don't really want Eckstein back, but I'm betting we sign him. There aren't any shortstops out there and there really aren't and starting jobs for Eckstein. I guess I wouldn't be opposed to a 1 year deal

    -- Posted by rjenks7 on Fri, Nov 9, 2007, at 7:41 AM

I really don't see the Cardinals offering Eckestein anything. John Mozeliak was quoted on the Cards official website that they would have to look to trade in a shortstop because the free agent market doesn't bear much fruit. And honestly I can't sit here and say that the New York Yankees don't have interest in Cabrera because his name and the Yankees have been linked together. The only thing is that Florida is looking to spend little money on good young Talent and I don't think that the Yankees young talent falls into an affordable fix for Florida. Ex. Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy all are young and highly talented but to much for the Marlins Pocketbook. Also the Yankees said they don't want to trade these three players.

The Yankee youngsters are no where near being free agents, their salary will be under team control for several more years. The Yankees have exactly what the Marlins want, the only question is whether the Yankees are willing to trade it. Trading youngsters for stars hasn't worked too well for the Yankees lately. There's no way they would trade any of those guys for Rolen. The only shortstop worth trading for is already gone, Edgar Renteria

There's nothing the Cardinals could offer to land Cabrera, unless it involved Pujols. So lets get that out of our heads. A-Rod is an incredible longshot and I doubt the organization has the finances to pull it off or are willing to pull it off. They've already got high dollar players like Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds, Carpenter eating up a lot of salary. If Rolen was traded, which I don't think he will be, the most logical thing I've heard is moving Ryan to third unless the Cards got a 3rd baseman in return.

get rid of rolen, move pujols over to third, slide duncan in at first and use a young outfield. i've said this since day 1.

    -- Posted by stl_redhawk on Fri, Nov 9, 2007, at 11:26 AM

No way does Pujols change positions. The guy is already developing chronic foot/leg problems, he stays at first

    -- Posted by rjenks7 on Fri, Nov 9, 2007, at 11:32 AM

The Cardinals payroll does not rank as high as their attendance. They set an all time attendance record this year with a sub-500 team. What incentive do they have to go after high end free agents when the seats are full of butts every night with a sub-500 team? If they don't go after a high end free agent this offseason maybe we fans should voice our displeasure by staying home in 09.

The yankees wont trade any of their young starters. They would have to give up very little to get rolen, it would be pretty much a salary dump.

    -- Posted by richiro33 on Fri, Nov 9, 2007, at 12:43 PM

Cardinal attendance was high this year on the heels of the World Series combined with the fact that the newness still hasn't worn off of Busch. The Dodgers and the Yankees led the majors in attendance this year.

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Nov 9, 2007, at 1:12 PM

    A-ROD A-ROD A-ROD A-ROD A-ROD A-ROD.

I would pay $100 bucks to sit in the nose-bleed seats at Busch or the standing room only section in 105 degree heat just to see him and Pujols batting next to each other.

-- Posted by NoDisclosure on Fri, Nov 9, 2007, at 1:52 PM

No doubt about it. I think it's funny that some of these Cardinal fans are so quick to bash A-Rod, but when he arrives in uniform then all of a sudden they'll be cheering for him and justifying why he's worth every penny. If he signs somewhere else, he's greedy. I follow the Cards as much as anybody, but I get tired of the hypocracy. I look at things realistically and objectively. Some fans can't do that.

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Nov 9, 2007, at 2:02 PM

If you look at things realistically then you can see why we won't get arod, would it be awesome yes but it is not possible.

    -- Posted by richiro33 on Fri, Nov 9, 2007, at 4:01 PM

I hope the rumors are true and that the general managers are conspiring league wide that they need to blackball or lowball A-Rod. I think he is worth 20 million a year, but 10 years for 350 million for a 32 year old shortstop is a risk I would walk away from too.

-- Posted by NoDisclosure on Fri, Nov 9, 2007, at 5:55 PM

If A-Rod goes to the Mutts, I would be more than happy to settle for David Wright. I like Scott Rolen, but if he is that disgruntled it is time for him to move on.

-- Posted by Ben Around on Fri, Nov 9, 2007, at 9:12 PM

rjenks7 you say all of the good shortstops are gone. What about Miguel Tejada he has been rumored to be ship out of Baltimore and to New York. What if the Cards threw their hat in the ring and made an offer. Just think about it you could trade a Dugan or someone like that with a couple of young minor league prospects and end up with one heck of a left side of an infield, with or without Rolen.

    -- Posted by USC_2860 on Sat, Nov 10, 2007, at 9:31 AM

Tejada is a tempting trade target, but I thought I heard that he is moving over to the 3rd. Maybe he can take Rolen's place. We know that we will have at least an upgrade at the plate.

    -- Posted by mattstl77 on Sat, Nov 10, 2007, at 3:39 PM

Do you really think that Tejada is still a $13M a year player? Funny that his stats have tailed off since more substance testing has begun. How many of his former teammates have already been outed? Giambi, Palmeiro????

Its gonna be interesting when mitchell releases the names and how that will affect the offseason.
