Mizzou's March to Number One

36-28. The Missouri Tigers are Big 12 North champions and possibly the number one team in the land. While the official BCS standings come out later today, here are a few things to ponder while Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing tries to pull the last remnants of Arrowhead dirt out of his helmet.

  • Some of the biggest heroes of the night were on the Tigers offensive line. Chase Daniel doesn't go 40-49 for 361 yards if he doesn't have a lot of time to throw the ball. Thanks to the o-line efforts, Daniel added further touches to a serious Heisman bid.

  • Over on defense, the Mizzou front-seven also deserve a gold star. Kansas had 42 rushing yards on 22 attempts. Kansas running back Brandon McAnderson came into the game averaging almost seven yards per carry. He averaged less than three on Saturday night.

  • It was abundantly clear early in the game that Kansas had never played a team this season with the talent level of Mizzou. The Jayhawks also discovered that reservoir is deep. Nine different Tigers had a pass reception. Danario Alexander and Tommy Saunders combined to grab 16 balls for 199 yards.

  • It was 14-0 Tigers at the half but the difference could have easily been greater. I thought Jeremy Maclin had a chance to break the opening kick of the game. It looked like a punt return in the first half also had the chance for six if Maclin had cut back instead of continuing down the sideline.

  • Hayti's William Moore is an All-American candidate at safety. He picked off his seventh pass of the season against Kansas, tying the team record for interceptions set by Roger Wehrli.

  • The most amazing stat from Saturday night -- 14 to 2. Mizzou had 14 penalties for 141 yards while Kansas was flagged just twice for 26 yards. How many times does the winning team have a 7:1 penalty ratio?

There were a few other things to worry about from last night. The deep pass down the middle of the field was wide open almost all night against the Mizzou defense and Kansas exploited the opportunity on numerous occasions. Parts of the secondary continue to be the soft underbelly of this team.

A friend of mine told me a few days before the game that his biggest worry wasn't the Kansas Jayhawks, but rather the Missouri coaching staff and that it would do something to screw things up. It didn't cost them the game, but a questionable decision came on the Tigers third offensive possession. Instead of kicking a 39-yard field goal to go up 3-0, Gary Pinkel elected to go with a fake that fooled no one. It wasn't fourth and two, mind you -- it was fourth and TWELVE. That play brought back painful memories of a similar unsuccessful play down at Texas A&M last year.

I'll say this for Pinkel, however. The guy is a bit of a riverboat gambler and he doesn't back down. After failing to convert the fake, he didn't hesitate when faced with a fourth and goal at the one yard line. Daniel's pass to Martin Rucker put the Tigers up 7-0, a lead they would never relinquish.

This team has poise and leadership from Daniel, an underrated offensive line and defense, and an embarrassment of riches at the skill positions. Those guys are supremely talented and a joy to watch. Like all great teams, they just make it look so easy at times.

My biggest fear is that the Tigers will now fall flat after such an emotionally charged game against a bitter rival. But there's plenty of time to bite the finger nails and chew on Rolaids while thinking about the rematch with Oklahoma.

It's time to appreciate an amazing regular season -- 11-1 and champions of the Big 12 North. And regardless of whether the rankings have Mizzou at #1 or #2, the Tigers control their destiny. That's all a team can ask for and all a fan can hope for during college football's craziest season. The best is yet to come.

This has been an extemely fun year to watch the Tigers, being an afterthought in the Big 12 for so long its makes the sucess so much better. The coaching staff has done a great job making MIZZOU a place talented recruits may want to play, but the administration has also come up with the money to improve the facilities. I wonder if the powers that be at SEMO are taking any notes?

Yeah lets start comparing SEMO and MIZZOU, thats real smart.

They can't even get the bootheel's best to play at SEMO, so what's the use?

You bring up excellent points about Mizzou, Mike. I can't wait for the championship game in San Antonio.

Kansas will have fun playing against some 7-4 SEC team at the Bed Bath and Beyond Bowl

Every true son, so happy hearted,

    Skies above us are blue,

There's a spirit so deep within us,

Old Missouri here's to you (RAH! RAH!).

When the band plays the Tiger war song,

And when the fray is through,

We will tramp, tramp, tramp around the Columns,

With a cheer for Old Mizzou!

    HIT IT!

    HOORAY, HURRAH, MIZZOU, MIZZOU!

    HOORAY, HURRAH, MIZZOU, MIZZOU!

HOORAY, HURRAH, AND A BULLY FOR OLD MIZZOU,

    RAH! RAH! RAH! RAH!

    MIZZOU-RAH! MIZZOU-RAH! MIZZOU-RAH, TIGERS!

William Moore, just like Tyler Hansborough, should have stayed to play at SEMO...

Im pretty sure you are kiddin elder, the sad thing is some will really think that.

Mizzou is #1 in the BCS standings!!

If I were Coach Pinkel, I would develop an offensive set for short yardage plays and to protect the lead late in the game. The O-line could easily adjust to tighter splits and with the tight ends and running backs that the Tigers have, Mizzou should be able to bust into the end zone and/or eat up a clock. Just my $.02.

the Tigers won't come out flat. They may not beat Oklahoma, but they won't come out flat. Chase Daniel won't let that happen. Martin Rucker won't let that happen. Pig Brown won't let that happen.

Are you guys at a bunch of patsies? Take a stand and say what you really want to say and that is...

Everybody clean their schedule on January 7.

-- Posted by NoDisclosure on Sun, Nov 25, 2007, at 8:47 PM

When we beat Oklahoma, I'll definitely clear my schedule.

Oklahoma will own the University of Missouri-Columbia again... Oklahoma is a real football school (not a one year wonder when every other team in all of college football has a down year), which will be proven again in San Antonio.

I don't think anybody is claiming Mizzou has the tradition of Oklahoma. But none of that matters when they meet on Saturday. You should dump the Redhawks and get on board with the rest of the state.

SEMO Redhawk- You are that guy. The one person that is against MIZZOU. You are very negative towards them. Do you think I would ever take your opinion seriously when you are a REDHAWKS fan and hating on MIZZOU. Buddy, SEMO cant win at anything except womens sports. I do think that they are good and deserve it. MIZZOU is #1 in the country and your are agianst them. I realize that it is there fault that the other teams are having a so-called down year. Give us a break, MIZZOU is good and you are not very intelligent if you ask me.

There is no need for Mizzou fans to be belittling Semo fans just because of 1 idiot with Semo in their handle.

If you are raised in a state where the landgrant has no rival university and are against it, then, you my friend, are a sad, sad individual.

SEMO Redhawks, you are the type of person, at/with SEMO, that drive alums away from it.

It's fun to bask in the moment. I was fortunate enough to be @ Arrowhead Saturday night and it was like no other event I've ever attended. 70-30 KU-MU attendence? Pshaw. We were with at least 40k of our Mizzou peeps.

Special teams should get their daps. Consider "Can't Miss" Wolfert's two FG against KU's two shanks - I think the east side of Arrowhead went crazier over the two KU misses than any Mizzou TDs. And ultimately those 6 points (excluding the last-minute safety) were the difference.

Let's not forget that Adam Crossett also unloaded a couple of pretty good punts when he needed to - without a block.

I'm a proud SEMO alumnus, but let's face it...comparing OVC football to the excitement of BCS conference football is rather like comparing apples to nuclear weapons.

For all of you who are so negative about the missouri tigers...what is the matter with you? Why can't you be happy that a team from Missouri-your home state-is doing so well this year, instead of being jealous that your team is not doing well. Jealousy, plain and simple. You're as bad as the cape people who are negative about Jackson football. Get a life people. Mizzou is a good football team whether you believe that or not, they wouldn't be where they are now if they weren't good. Watch out Oklahoma...we are going to slaughter you next saturday night...oh sweet revenge.

Personally I am cheering on the MOUNTAINEERS WITH EVERYTHING I HAVE!!! I MAY BE THE DUCK OUT OF WATER BUT I WOULD NEVER ABANDON MY MOUNTAINEERS. THERE'S DEEP TIES TO MY BIRTHPLACE. I GREW UP RIGHT AROUND MORGANTOWN AND IT IS LIKE FAMILY. BTW, MISSOUTIGERS, YOUR COMMENT ABOUT EVERYONE BEING SO NEGATIVE TOWARD THE TIGERS, I UNDERSTAND HOW YOU FEEL. I WAS ALL EXCITED LAST YEAR ABOUT THE MOUNTAINEERS AND MY BUBBLE WAS BURST WHEN I DISCOVERED FORMER WEST VIRGINIANS AND SOME STILL RESIDING IN THE STATE KICKING THE MOUNTAINEERS SAYING THEY DIDN'T DESERVE TO BE WHERE THEY WERE IN RANKING, THAT THEY REALLY DIDN'T EARN THE RIGHT TO BE THERE CONSIDERING THE TEAMS THEY HAVE PLAYED... SO IT IS DISHEARTENING WHEN A TEAM'S OWN FOLKS TEAR THEM DOWN. CHIN UP...i WANT TO SAY GOOD LUCK BUT NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO BEAT THE MOUNTAINEERS. JUST KIDDING. TAKE CARE.

Having lived in Illinois I used to hate Mizzou but I have been impressed with them this year and started rooting for them after my son went to thier football camp. I still like my Illini (which helped Mizzou out a little bit) but I hope you let this former Illinoisan and now Missourian jump on board the train to the National Championship. Go MIZZOU!
