Rolen for Glaus?

Posted Saturday, January 12, 2008, at 4:21 PM

Update: Glaus will be in St. Louis Monday for his physical.

The St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays are discussing swapping third basemen - Scott Rolen for Troy Glaus. The story at the Post-Dispatch here.

Ken Rosenthal says both former All-Stars must pass physicals before the deal is completed.

Glaus, a year younger than Rolen, hit 20 home runs in 115 games for the Jays last year. His career stats are here.

MLB.com quotes an industry source saying he would be "startled" if the deal doesn't take place.

A good trade on the face of it, but then again if Rolens medical records check out good enough for the deal to go through then he is a much better bet to bounce back that I would have previously guessed.

The Cardinals seem to lust after ex-Anaheim Angels, particularly the 2002 World Series version(Eckstein, Spezio, Kennedy, Percival, O. Palmeiro). If only Eckstein had been resigned we could have reassembled their entire infield with the addition of Glaus.

Mike Mitchell's response:
It's amazing how similar these two are - about the same age, same position, injury plagued. Rolen has a better glove, Glaus has better power.

Roto Authority has their early ranking of third basemen for 2008 - while it's not a perfect proxy - doesn't consider defense - it is interesting. Rolen is ranked #21, Glaus is ranked #22.

Baseball Prospectus hasn't updated their player cards but their forecast for 2008 had Rolen with a WARP (wins above replacement player) of 5.5. Glaus was at 5.4.

Alright, you beat Winters-Morriss to the story! Although I'm sure he'll give us his take on it too. *rolls eyes*

Considering the circumstances, this is probably the best the Cardinals could have done in the way of making a move.

I'm sure some people are saying, "Why can't we get a decent pitcher for Rolen?"

Those people seem to forget that we would not have a 3rd basemen if/when we get rid of Rolen.

I hope the deal goes through...both guys need a new start at a promising club.

Mike Mitchell's response:
Projections from various sources:

2008 ZiPS projections from the Baseball Think Factory:

Scott Rolen .255 .331 .397 (avg/obp/slg) - That's a .728 OPS

Troy Glaus .247 .350 .469 - .819 OPS

Bill James projects Glaus to have an .851 OPS next season, Rolen .842.

Ron Shandler has Glaus at .833 and Rolen at .816.

I like the trade. Its obvious Rolen was going to be traded and I think they are getting some value in return.

Finally an end to the drama. Glad this distraction won't continue into spring training.

Sorry to see Rolen go, he was one of the best Card 3b's ever, but TLR is one of the best skippers also. Too bad they couldn't work it out.

Considering everything that got played-out publicly, the Cards are fortunate to get anyone of equal value in return.

Good luck Scotty/Hello Troy.

Will Carroll, Baseball Prospectus' injury guru, says that Glaus' foot surgery was relatively minor. Essentially a nerve was moved to lessen pain in his foot from the plantar fasciitis. He thinks Glaus' health prospects are reasonably good for the next two years.

He believes one reason the Jays made the deal is that they watched Glaus overcome shoulder injuries similar to Rolen's and believe there is reasonable chance Rolen can do the same. Carroll expects Rolen to have more shoulder issues in the future.
