Cardinals clinch!
Posted by Rachel Crader (Moderator) on Sat, Sep 26, 2009, at 10:21 PM:

I don't know about you all, but I'm glad that's done. It was starting to feel a little bit more like winning would be a relief than a celebration!

Of course Yadi leaving the game is a concern, but for tonight, I'm choosing to just be happy.

Postseason predictions? Things you'd like to see the team accomplish or improve on before the playoffs start? Too early for all that talk?

Rachel.

I think the Cardinals have a legitimate chance to advance to the World Series. The Phillies top three starters are left handed. Lee, Happ and Hamels are very dangerous. Lee pitched well against the Cardinals in a Sunday Night Baseball game earlier this season. Hamels has good career numbers against the Cardinals. Happ may be the top rookie in baseball. The Cardinals record against the Phillies over the last several seasons is not great. If there is a team the keeps the Cardinals out of the World Series it just might be the Phillies.

I do not think the Cardinals need to make changes. Wainwright, Carpenter and Pineiro will likely determine how far the Cardinals advance in postseason. Hitting is great. If you do not score you do not win. Starting pitching is the most important factor, however.

I like the Yankees to win it all. However, history indicates the postseason is unpredictable. The talent level is so high in baseball it is almost impossible to predict who will win the World Series.

Two or three weeks ago I thought Cards had a big advantage over the Phils in the closer role. But Franklin hasn't been himself lately.

By the way, until Yadi left the game tonight, Franklin was my only concern right now. I keep telling myself that every closer is bound to have a rough sport at some point during the year, so it's not a big deal. I actually think that is true, so I'm just going to give him a little more time before I start to have legitimate doubts.

Do you think we would be better playing the Rockies or the Dodgers in the first round? I believe St. Louis is 1-6 against the Rockies and 5-2 against the Dodgers. However, the Dodgers have a better record than the Rockies. It is also worth pointing out we would likely have home field advantage against the Rockies, while the Dodgers would likely have home field advantage against the Cardinals.

Molina suffered another injury on Thursday. The Cardinals have definitely cooled off. I am starting to get worried.
