I couldn't help but notice a television report that Tejada has interest in signing with the Cardinals. After I heard the report, I searched the Internet for articles that might confirm Tejada is interested in the Cardinals. I was unable to find an article that reported Tejada and the Cardinals are close to a deal. What if the Cardinals could sign Tejada, however? Would it be an automatic ticket to the World Series next season?
How should the Cardinals address their need for a starting thid baseman and a fifth starter if they do not have the money to sign Tejada? The answer to this question could be David Freese and Jaime Garcia. These players would be cheap options that would allow the Cardinals to save enough money to make a mid-season trade. There are other options available, however. Khalil Greene, Melvin Mora and Joe Crede could help the Cardinals at third base. Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Hampton, Mark Mulder and John Smoltz are also are also available if the Cardinals want a veteran fifth starter. Who would you sign? Would anyone like to see the Cardinals sign Khalil Greene and Mark Mulder?
I don't know about a mid-season trade right now. As of right now our cuppard is a little bare after all the trades we made last year. I would personally like to see us pick up Smoltz on a one year deal and add another left handed bat to the bench since Ankiel will not be coming back.

If you could get Tejada for less than 10 million would you sign him? I have heard the Cardinals have approximately 10 million dollars left to work with next season.

Holliday made some interesting comments in an article written by Joe Strauss. Holliday's comments make me wonder if the Cardinals may use the remainder of their money to sign Pujols now. Here is the link to the article http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/...

Ken Rosenthal is predicting Miguel Tejada will sign with the Cardinals or the Twins. His final prediction is the Cardinals, however. He feels Tejada's price will be low enough for the Cardinals to aford. He describes Tejada as "a potential bargain." I have also read other reports this morning that indicate Tejada has a strong desire to play in St. Louis. It should also be noted Pujols and Tejada are good friends.

I would like to see Miggy in red! As far as the 5th starter, I think Hawksworth would be a nice fit there.

Interesting.....
Batting Order?
1) Schumaker
2) Rasmus
3) Pujols
4) Holliday
5) Ludwick
6) Tejada
7) Ryan
8) Molina
9) Pitchers Spot
Roatation?
1) Carpenter
2) Wainwright
3) Lohse
4) Penny
5) Hawksworth?

Mark Mulder?????? You have to be joking

drawmules,
I would love to see the Cards sign Miggy to a short contract, possibly filled with incentives, and as long as it sits around $8 Million. Then I would also I like to see them add Smoltz on a one year deal as a possible 5th starter or bullpen role, where he could either give Franklin more rest or even supplant Franklin.
-- Posted by zalmanian on Thu, Jan 7, 2010, at 1:21 PM
I am unsure if there is enough money to add Smoltz and Tejada. I think Tejada would be a valuable addition to a team that desperately needs a third baseman. Smoltz would also be valuable. In my opinion, however, there might be more alternatives from within the organization for the fifth starter. There are really no options at third base within the organization other than Freese. I am not convinced Freese is ready. Tejada is a big game player. He performs well in the big games. I think signing Tejada would be just as big as signing Holliday.
I find it interesting the sports writers for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch are not writing about this potential signing of Tejada. Ken Rosenthal, who writes for Fox Sports on a national level, is the writer predicting the Cardinals will sign Tejada. KFVS 12 also indicated rumors are circulating about the Cardinals signing Tejada on their newscast Wednesday night. I would think if a deal really close one of the writers for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch would be writing about it. Therefore, I am unsure how close the Cardinals and Tejada are close to signing a contract.
What do you think Crader? Can you call Ken Rosenthal and ask him if he is serious LOL?

Ken Rosenthal is reporting Tejada wants a two year 16 million dollar contract. Should the Cardinals sign Tejada?

What about the St. Louis homeboy that was suppose to be their future 3rd bagger??? Didn't he get a DWI?
Whats up with him?
Sure would like them to offer trade to Dodgers........for a talented young 3rd baseman, that they don't know what to do with!
-- Posted by tlks2much on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 9:30 AM
If we can't sign someone like Tejada, Tyler Greene or Julio Lugo could get some time at third as well, though they aren't going to give you your typical power numbers that you want from that position.
Mark Mulder? Really? Trading Dan Haren and Kiko Calero for him was one of the worst trades that I can remember by St. Louis. Future all star for an average pitcher at best.

I agree the Mulder trade didn't work out. I think Tejada is the final piece the Cardinals needs to advance to the World Series. But if we get him we might need Pujols to convince Tejada to play in St. Louis. It is my understanding the two are really close friends.
-- Posted by drawmules on Sun, Jan 10, 2010, at 3:13 AM
If we could get tejada that would be awesome, but I just don't know if we can afford another big time guy simply because we will need money for pujols. I hope I'm wrong!

I found this article just now. It estimates how much money the Cardinals have left to spend on players. According to the article, the Cardinals have between 7 million and 8 million dollars left to work with. Here is a link to the article http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/...
-- Posted by drawmules on Mon, Jan 11, 2010, at 3:01 AM
If you want Tejada it will mean that the Cardinals will be spending money on free agents similar to the Yanks and BoSox, which in turn means ticket prices will be in the league of BoSox and Yanks. I'm not saying it wouldn't be worth it but things would have to change in order to support it
-- Posted by 6+4+3=2 on Mon, Jan 11, 2010, at 8:44 AM
The Cards went cheap last year on salaries. They spent 22 million less than 2008. Spend the money, get the players! Ownership needs to quit worrying about lining their pockets! It's a proven fact that the fans will be there, even through the rough times. Here is the link from the last 2 years salaries.
-- Posted by mandm96 on Mon, Jan 11, 2010, at 10:28 AM
The Cardinals could sign Tejada and keep their payroll around 102 million if they use players from within their organization to fill the other open slots on the roster. Trading Ludwick would also help the Cardinals gain more flexibility. It might also be a great way to aquire minor league prospects.
-- Posted by drawmules on Mon, Jan 11, 2010, at 12:19 PM
Are you factoring in what Pujols and Wainwright or going to bring in terms of salary? I'm all for signing these guys, and yes the attendance will always be high, but part of being a owner is trying to make a profit. Like it or not owners have to worry about "lining their pockets" or else they wouldn't own the team
-- Posted by 6+4+3=2 on Mon, Jan 11, 2010, at 12:36 PM
6 + 4 + 3 = 2
The article above has already factored in these salaries. Pujols is signed for next season. The Cardinals are not required to offer Pujols a new contract. Save the money, sign Tejada, offer Smoltz a contract for less than $1 million, if he turns it down use a starter from within the organization as a fifth starter, and use minor league prospect to fill the bench slots on the Cardinal roster.

6 + 4 + 3 = 2
I have also read if the Cardinals are willing to play the waiting game they could get Tejada for much less than $8 million.

Take Khalil Greene off the list of available players for the Cardinals to consider at third base for next season. Greene has signed with the Texas Rangers. Here is a link to the article http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/commish...

I just think its going to cost a lot of money to keep the nucleus of this team in tact for the next 5 or so years, which is fine by me, I'm all for it. I also know that to support this, something's got to give, prices may go up, they may not. If you want quality, you have to pay for quality, simple as that.

According to John Paul Morosi, the Cardinals will not make a trade for Jhonny Peralta. Peralta has one guaranteed year remaining on his contract with the Cleveland Indians. There was some speculation the Twins or Cardinals might trade for Peralta. However, according to John Paul Morosi, it is unlikely the Indians will move Peralta. Peralta hit .254 with 11 home runs and 83 RBIs last season.

Drawmules,
Who in the minors would the Cards trade for Peralta even if the Indians were trading him? We traded away a lot of young talented prospects for Holliday and Derosa. I can't see Mozeliak and Luhnow trading away more prospects this early in the season/year. Maybe in late July to help solidify our roster when we have guys that teams might be interested in, but not right now.

It would hurt my feelings to see Freese traded for Peralta. Peralta is not that good. Therefore, it might not take three prospects to bring him to St. Louis. I don't really want Peralta. However, a Freese for Paralta trade wouldn't bother me.
I also think we are in a position where we should consider trading Ludwick for a third baseman that puts up similiar numbers. I think it would be much easier to find another outfielder from within our minor league system than to find a third baseman.

I totally agree with that. However, Mather needs to get healthy and stay healthy and we still have guys like Jon Jay, Daryl Jones, Stavinoha, and Shane Robinson. Robinson has tons of speed and stole 16 bases in 100 games. However, he still didn't the ball too well last year. Jon Jay has lots of promise of a outfielder who can hit for average, but dosen't possess a lot of power. He hit just 10 HR with .281 avg in 136 games, but he also hit 23 doubles. Mather was injured for most of the season and made it up to Memphis before the end of the season, but still struggled in every level after the surgery, but there is still hope. Jones only made it to Springfield last year, but was also selected to the Futures All-Star game and hit .279 with 20 xtra base hits, and 29 RBIs. All of these guys will recieve camp invites.

John Mozeliak answered questions at a press conference on Saturday at the Winter Warm-Up at the Hyatt Regency hotel in St. Louis.
Mozeliak said the Cardinals want to finalize the contracts of Ludwick and Schumaker before they sign additonal players. Both players have filed for arbitration.
If money remains after Ludwick and Schumaker are signed, the Cardinals are interested in signing a fifth starter. Mozeliak indicated the Cardinals have interest in signing John Smoltz, Ben Sheets or Chien-Ming Wang.
The Cardinals may also be interested in signing reliver Derrick Turnbow.
Mozeliak also indicated David Freese would have the opportunity to win the starting job at third base.
