Conference Presidents and "Notre Dame" meet to discuss BCS Playoff System
Posted by Headhunt on Tue, Jun 26, 2012, at 8:21 AM:

Why, please tell me WHY Notre Dame has a seat at the table on this deal?

4. Notre Dame will have an automatic berth if it is in the top eight of the final BCS Standings.

The Notre Dame rule....what a bunch of bull

Since the BCS started playing games in 1998, Notre Dame has been involved in just 3 BCS bowl games....

Losing all 3, 41-9 to Oregon State, 34-20 to Ohio State, and 41-14 to LSU. Quite frankly, Notre Dame is an average team, with an above average fan base.

And that's all...They haven't won a Bowl game of ANY kind since 1994. 18 years ago....

What ever they were, there are no longer.

If the BCS Committee gives them a "seat at the table", it is about one thing, and one thing only.

Money

In the day when they actually may have "needed" ND's fan base, I can understand.....but now.....with 50 million to pass around the leagues.........who needs a losing Notre Dame to even be considered, even if it does "win" 8 or 9 games. I see the pre-season folks have them ahead of Florida, and Oklahoma State, TCU, and North Carolina, Stanford, and yet, like Obama, pundits just can't resist talking about their successes, even when there are so very few.....saying..."but IF ND wins just ONE of the BIG Rivalry games......."they could be playing for the National Championship"

It never fails.....Some sportswriter says it every single year....and every year......is wrong.

Let Notre Dame EARN it's way in, like everyone else has to ...The days of elite treatment of ND , should be long past. And the BCS should know better.

Bravo, Headhunt! Bravo! I feel the same way. Of course, money is the underlying factor. ND deserves no more or no less than any other BCS team. The fact that they are getting a bid if they are within the top 8 of the BCS is a joke! Shouldn't it be....within the top 4???? What kind of nonsense is that?

You are spot on in your analysis, Headhunt!

I'm not disagreeing with your post, but ND did win the Aloha Bowl against Hawaii about three years back and then beat Miami in the Sun Bowl two years ago. And also ND gets the consideration because of it's fanbase that they have nationwide, or as you said, money. It is beyond above average, they come out in droves and have sold out Notre Dame Stadium every year since the 70s or something ridiculous. It's all about the money and tv ratings and the bottom line is bowls will make more money, more fans, and bring in tv ratings if they are involved. But I'm not disagreeing with your post. They haven't done anything on the field in the last 20 years to warrant that consideration. Personally I think their schedule is too brutal most years.

Bravo, semohoops! Bravo!

Sorry Rocket. Us Irish fans have to stick together haha.

Honestly, there is truth to both semohoops and Headhunt's posts. The product on the field hasn't come close to comparing to the massive fan base (money the program generates) for years which makes it hard for the casual football fan to see why they receive the 'ND Treatment'.

Same could be said about the Cowboys or Yankees, although obviously they have to 'earn their way' into playoff situations. It's more likely that people will watch/buy/be more interested in the product if the Irish are involved.

Wrong? Probably. Going to change? Nope.

In two of the the three BCS games they've played in (that the Irish lost quite handily as Headhunt mentioned) they were still rated among the highest of the year as well as two of the highest since 1998.

Now c'mon...you know you love hating on ND (college or hs) just as much as I love rooting for them (strictly college). If they lost their 'ND Treatment' (college and hs haha) you and yours wouldn't have anything to rant about.

We both don't want to lose that. Do we? :)

My bad hoops...you are correct.....How coudl I have missed the Hawaii Bowl and the Sun Bowl....back to back wins....only to lose in the Champ Sports Bowl in 2011 ( Champ sports bowl)??

Anyway....yes agreed...their fan base is huge...no idea why.....but even the announcers of "Notre Dame Saturday" as NBC calls it.....still reference Knute Rockne, and the 4 Horsemen....

and by the way Rockne Coached ND from 1918, to 1930.....a mere 82 years ago......so I can understand the "catch phrases", since it was almost like yesterday ...the 4 Horsemen, 1924.....

I understand the History....but if you wanna talk history Princeton and Yale BOTH have more to squawk about than ND...both have won 8 and 7 more titles respectively.......but for some reason I just don't ever catch "Princeton Saturday" on NBC......but then again, I don't watch alot of tv....

You are correct Stat......I would pull for a Russian Football team before ND ( college)

If Obama had his own college , I would even pull for...................

wait wait wait......SCRATCH THAT last part....

GO IRISH !!!!!!!!

You got me all wrong, Stat. I don't hate the college ND....really. They haven't done anything in so long.... Actually, I do admire the ND fans and their history. But, to remain relevant (in my opinion), you have to compete or be in contention for some type of title. I think, in that respect, ND suffers from not being in a football conference.

I would have ranted about any independent that "got a seat at the table" without earning their way in. The fact that ND or any school should "get a shot" just because of their name or their fan base is silly.

If that's the case, MSHSAA should have allowed Sikeston to go to the Final 4 last year (in basketball) and told Imagine Prep to stay home, even thought Imagine Prep beat Sikeston by 1. You know Sikeston would have brought WAY more fans than IP did (that's no knock to IP, just making a point). Heck, just throw out the playoffs and take the team with the most fans! :)

Part of Notre Dame's problem in bowl games was due to their prestige they would always get the bigger bowl games against a higher quality opponent. While the payday was always the driving factor in accepting those bowl games, that was also the biggest reason why they had that long bowl losing streak. They were playing teams that were clearly better most of the time. You knew going in that the Irish would be heavy underdogs in those games.
