"Most Popular Team"
Posted by Cully Bryant on Tue, Apr 13, 2010, at 5:48 PM:

If you had to pick one team to root for aside from your hometown or alma mater, which would it be? I think this question may be one way of deciding which teams are actually "well-liked" by the majority of fans. Admittedly, this is very unscientific, but I thought it might be fun during this fairly slow time of year. For me, I would break it down into schools with and without football.

Here are my two:

Schools with football: Hayti -- Not sure exactly why I root for Hayti to win. I have absolutely no tie to them. I think it has to do with the fact that for years Hayti was not very good at football at all. It was only after Coach Gibbs took them to the state semis in the eighties that they seemed to turn things around. Since then, I always think of them as a feel good story. Kids from an ovbiously disadvantaged environment succeeding on the football field with William Moore as the poster child. Gotta like that.

Schools without football: Oran -- I've always rooted for the Eagles. Seem like a bunch of good kids, good sportsmanship and seem to just never be able to get over the hump, particularly in baseball.

Any others?

Leopold has always had a remarkable following since I have been alive anyways. Their fans are amazing. I'm a big volleyball fan also so I'm naturally attracted to Leopold's athletic program.

It's tought for me to pick a football school. I haven't watched a great deal of high school football in recent years. I'll go with NMCC. They have a super AD, great pep band and they are almost always competitive.

Love seeing SCC take down some bigger teams.

Football...Chaffee. In basketball...SCC, Kelly, Leopold, and Charleston.

Idk bout the football team cause i can't really pick the team I want besides mine...but in basketball: Sikeston Bulldogs hands down. Some people might not agree with this because of the BUMS and some of their comments and things but Sikeston has a great competitive atmosphere which i think wills them bulldogs to obliterate their opponents the way they do. Also tied with them i would have SCC. They have great faithful fans and has only played 3 games under 10 pts.(NMCC, Notre Dame, Maplewood-Richmond Heights) They are also the 2x defending class 1 champions.

So far, it looks like SCC is a fan favorite of many. I think this is interesting. Keep the comments coming.

For a school without football I'd go with SCC. For a school with football I'm going with Cape Central.

For a large school I would go with Cape Central. It's funny, I remember Sikeston and Cape always playing at the end of the year (football) to see who was going to have the worst season. I had friends at CT also growing up so it was fun whenever they played. They remind me alot of each other in the sense that when they're supposedly down they shock alot of teams. I don't know alot about the smaller schools but I would have to go with our up the street rival SCC, they can play with ANY team in the state and has 2 top 50 recruits IMO.

So many people picking SCC as a team they enjoy rooting for despite the occasional complaints that they "run up the score" (a complaint I never found to be valid.) Interesting.

football monkey

I agree the running up the score comment is not valid.

Seems everybody likes a winner. What happens to the fans if they were only 500 not state champs?

-- Posted by deervalley on Wed, Apr 14, 2010, at 12:17 PM

Mostly the list includes "winners", but not all of them. I think it would be a stretch to consider Oran or Cape Central as consistent winners, except perhaps baseball for Oran and Cape has had some good pole vaulters lately, but aside from that they have had very little to cheer about.

Hey Football Monkey: saw a picture in the Standard of Tanner hurdling. If he would bend both elbows while over the top of the hurdle he can get back quicker into running mode to lower his time. Time in the air is time wasted, the sooner you hit the ground the more you gain. I'm sure Coach King has told him the same thing! BTW I went over Sat. morning to watch the Jackson Inv. and no one was there. I was told later they moved the time to accomodate the SAT test. Good move, it just hadn't been done before. Oh well, I'll catch themat the Twilight meet. Looks like the Dog's are running well so far. Hope they can repeat!

Thanks semo ref; and yes, he has been told the same thing many times. Every photo captures the same problem. Sorry you missed the meet. It was a beautiful day weatherwise and Sikeston ran very well. Look for Alex Clark, Quentin Washington, Ishmael Johnson and Tre Lewis to surprise some folks this year. The 4x100 and 4x200 relays are very strong, maybe even better than last year, and the 4x400 relay team has already posted a time that would have placed in the top 8 at state last season. We will have kids place in the long jump, triple jump, 400 meter and all the sprint relays including the 4x400. The question will be can we get any points from the high jump, hurdle races, pole vault and discus. We're close in these events...very close. We also have a shot at getting multiple athletes to score points in the long jump, triple jump and 110 meter high hurdles. If we can repeat last year and get two or three on the podium in a few events at Jeff City, things could get interesting.

Hope to see you Friday. I may even give you a few basketball officiating tips! The Bulldogs look good so far and I also noticed some of the girls relay times. Pretty strong.

I like watching NMCC football. Great team. Im gonna also have to go with SCC basketball haha! Don't watch much baseball so Im not educated enough to have an opionion lol!

As a former track dawg I'm so loving how great they are right now. Alot of people don't realize but it's the one sport that Sikeston has ALWAYS been great at. They have produced alot of NCAA champs. Good luck on another run at another state title guys and the girls are running great as well.

well for a school without football I like to watch Notre Dame play. They are always very competitive in all sports, such as great soccer, basketball, golf, and baseball. For a school with football I'm going to go with NMCC. They are also usually competitive in a lot of sports such as, basketball, track, and I believe they won districts last year in golf and football. They also have an outstanding softball team which I believe is undefeated at this point in the season.

First vote for a private school! Thanks, bulldogs. Who is for the perpetual underdogs here? Where are the East Prairie, Chaffee, Oak Ridge, Grandview, etc. fans?
