  • what are holcombs field dimensions?

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 7:28 AM
  • *

Nerd, If they haven't made any changes in the past 7-10 years, it is around 275-280 down the lines and around 300 center. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but not a large field by any means.

-- Posted by secretagentman on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 8:43 AM
  • About 6 years ago they moved the fences back. Its marked at 305 down the lines now, and 340 in center is what they call it, but it's not marked. Not sure the exact dimensions of the power alleys, but I know right center is a short porch.

-- Posted by bleacherking on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 8:47 AM
  • It is an odd field in dimensions. 305 down both lines. Approximately 330 to dead center. Approximately 340 to left center alley, but about 295 to right center (to come in front of a light pole that was already there I think).

    -- Posted by Rocky09 on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 8:58 AM
  • Holcomb is very fortunate to be playing both playoff games at home. I don't like this about the baseball playoffs. Absolutely nothing against Holcomb at all. But from a standpoint of fairness I believe they should play the games at a neutral site, just as they do in basketball.

I also wish there was a way they could balance playoff play out(which of course, is next to impossible). Naylor is in the state quarterfinal. Again, absolutely nothing against Naylor, they didn't set up the system, they just play the system that is set before them. I just wish there was a way to give another team(s), a chance to advance, in the interest of seeing the best teams in the state, regardless of location, advance as far as possible in the state playoffs.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 10:06 AM
  • Naylor has been the underdog two of the last three years in districts and both times the opponent it beat was state-ranked.

They beat a very strong Oak Ridge team in 2011 sectionals, an Oak Ridge team in 2012 that lost quite a bit of talent from the year before and the Bakersfield team yesterday was also receiving votes in the state poll.

Just stating facts. Naylor has peaked at the right time for three straight years now.

-- Posted by bjrosener on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 10:30 AM
  • Any chance we see cancellation or game time moved up because the weather? I think everybody be a little skittish after what happened in Oklahoma. I plan on being at the Ste gen/Notre Dame game so if anyone hears anything let me know.

    -- Posted by deckerd31 on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 12:32 PM
  • small field at Holcomb, NO foul territory to speak of, bad hops abound on the infield. Dugouts about 40 feet from home plate--but other than that its a nice place.

-- Posted by Slim shady on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 12:40 PM
  • Getting out of districts the last few years has been real tough. Neelyville was ranked 3rd in state last year and pulled the upset 2-1. After they 10 runned us a couple times during the regular season. This year we had to beat a heck of a pitcher in Elfrink and a very athletic Leopold team. I don't think anything has been set up for a easy road to where we are at. Like DAR said, we played our best at the right time.

-- Posted by Kidrayray on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 12:44 PM
  • What Class 1 or 2 high school field has much foul territory? The infield at Holcomb is rough, can't say that it's not. But it's going to play rough for both teams. Chaffee is used to playing on dirt so Holcomb would be at the same disadvantage if the game was at Chaffee. Which is precisely why neutral sites should be used. As far as Holcomb's field dimensions are concerned, it's plenty big enough to play high school baseball on, especially with the alterations in the bats the past year or so. Also, the wind will be blowing hard from right field to left so the ball won't carry, except for maybe down the left field line.

As far as my comments about Naylor are concerned. I wasn't attacking Naylor. They won their games and are in the state-quarterfinal. It doesn't matter how they may or may not have gotten there. My comments really don't have anything to do with Naylor. I just used them as an example because I feel that their sectional opponent(Bakersfield) was not as strong as several Class 1 schools in this area(Naylor, Oak Ridge, Cooter, Risco, etc.) Naylor has a solid Class 1 program and has earned their place the past few season.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 1:10 PM
  • The only above average team in class 1 I've seen this year is Oran. With that being said, Naylor deserves to be in the quarterfinal game as much as any other class 1 team in the area IMO. If they don't, who does?

Cooter's definitely down from years past, Naylor is down from years past, and honestly Oran is down also. Oran has only 3 players hitting over .300 at this point in the season, now granted they play a stout schedule. Oak Ridge, Leopold, and Risco might be the only 3 teams in class 1 improved from years past and Oran and Naylor have knocked out two of the three teams. Bottomline, class 1 is beyond weak compared to 3-5 years ago.

-- Posted by Uncle Charlie on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 2:08 PM
  • I was at the game yesterday and only saw one bad hop all game, and that ball was smoked and would have taken a great play to field cleanly anyway. EC made 5 errors on the day, 4 in one inning, with the majority of them being THROWING errors (such as nobody covering first base on a bunt), or in one case, the inability to pick up a stationary bunted ball. And as was previously noted, there were no home runs, nor did anyone really come close, so the dimensions were not relevant. The field was not the issue yesterday.

-- Posted by No sir on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 2:17 PM
  • Class 1 is weak, especially with traditionally strong Class 1 programs like Neelyville and Bernie bumping up to Class 2. Even Chaffee was Class 1 for a couple of years, although they've mainly been in Class 2 in recent years. But who cares? If you win, you win. Can't be taken away from you.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 2:19 PM
  • I agree. The field had nothing to do with yesterday's outcome. But it would be short-sighted to not admit that is COULD be an issue because of the quality of playing surface. That being said, it will play that way tomorrow, both, when Holcomb and Chaffee are in the field. No advantage either way.

  • SG @ ND game cancelled until Wed

    -- Posted by hb1025 on Tue, May 21, 2013, at 4:16 PM
  • The field has been an issue for some time. Both teams do have to play on the same field just the same. I think Holcomb has a really good Ag. Program and may be a good project for them to work with. I don't think there is enough interest for the coach to put in the time nor the funds to do it. Good luck to all the teams left.

  • Notre Dame and Westminister in the same bracket...that is a rough one! Switching to 5 classes helepd 2 major groups, the large class 3 (NMCC, Scott City, etc)that used to be class 3 with the bigger schools and the large class 4 (Desoto, Sikeston, etc) that are the big dogs in their class. Class 4 still amazes me that it goes all the way from 550 to 1180. Great example in our district-Kennett-575 or so (correct if I'm wrong) to Sikeston 1052. Once you have over 900 students, I feel that you should be fine competing with the big boys.

-- Posted by baseballfever on Wed, May 22, 2013, at 8:19 PM
  • Chaffee's lack of defense beat them.

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Wed, May 22, 2013, at 8:23 PM
  • Lack of defense maybe but you could give the other team a little credit. They did pitch, catch and all in all play a pretty good game.

-- Posted by baseballfever on Wed, May 22, 2013, at 8:37 PM
  • I guess Chaffees lack of defense caused them to be carved up (2 runners through 6 innings and one earned run in a complete game by Holcomb's pitcher.) When you head back to Chaffee to pick up your defense, you might want to grab the bats because apparently you left them behind too.

  • I clearly stated they outplayed us.

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Wed, May 22, 2013, at 9:53 PM
  • Holcomb out pitched and played better defense.. each team had 5 hits.. Holcomb had 7 base runners from errors and walks.. that's why I said our defense beat us bc the hits were equal.

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Wed, May 22, 2013, at 9:56 PM
  • No Sir, you're giving the Holcomb faithful a bad name. Stop being so touchy. Nobody badmouthed Holcomb. For goodness sakes, your team won the game. You might want to wait until after a loss to act childish.

-- Posted by jwhitlock on Wed, May 22, 2013, at 10:37 PM
  • The difference in the game was not only the errors, but the walks from Chaffee's pitchers. The hits were equal, but Holcomb did not allow a walk. Holcomb played excellent defensively and scraped out enough offense to get the win, just like they've done all year.

-- Posted by bleacherking on Wed, May 22, 2013, at 11:46 PM
  • no sir sounds like a parent or brother of one of the Holcomb faithful. congrats and enjoy your success--but remember you will meet the same people going down the ladder of success as you met climbing up that ladder.

-- Posted by Slim shady on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 7:20 AM
  • KFVS12 news had the played at first which clearly shows our first baseman catching that ball before the runner dislodged it from his glove which was a force out but instead led to two runs for a 2-0 lead.

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 7:41 AM
  • I've never saw Houart throw for Holcomb but he shut down a good east carter team so he must be pretty good. I've got to see Clark twice and he was good enough to beat us yesterday and should have beat us at Malden in all honesty. When he is able to start his pitches thigh to knee high, he has so much downward movement on every pitch, that it's darn near impossible to beat him. The only way we hit hi was when he left the ball up a little. He was tremendous yesterday. With those two pitchers, a defense that seems to have figured it out, I think Holcomb has a real chance.

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 7:50 AM
  • Sportsnerd, I haven't seen the replay, but the play, the way you described it (using high school rules), is not a catch. A player must physically remove the ball from his glove and have control in his bare hand to be called a catch. Oran had that play maybe last year or two called against them in the final four.

I didn't even get into the thoughts of obstruction on defense, interference on offense. Malicious contact and other things as well.

-- Posted by Pete Czeria on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 9:19 AM
  • I'm not sure about that.. not many people catch a ball and take it out with their hand and show the umpire.

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 9:50 AM
  • Pete you are correct except on this play, initially the umpire actually called the runner out on the force play but when the first basemans glove and the runner collided, the ball came out and he called him safe. Since the initial call was a force out, the ball coming out on the collision should have been a non-factor. I saw the umpire make the out call BEFORE the collision ever occurred. Later, he said he made the out call on the tag to cover himself but that was a cop out. He blew the call. However, I'm not going to say that cost Chaffee the game. Holcomb played better and deserved the win.

-- Posted by deadred on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 9:50 AM
  • The umpire, from the way it sounds, should've waited to see the entire play through before making his call.

-- Posted by Pete Czeria on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 9:53 AM
  • You all are turning this into football with the "complete the catch" talk. 9 out of 10 force outs the defender takes his foot off the bag before removing the ball from his glove which would make the runner safe by your logic. Darn umps been blowing force out calls this whole time!

    -- Posted by Goredhawks4life on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 10:10 AM
  • To have a catch, the fielder must have firm and secure control of the baseball, along with a voluntary release of the baseball.

-- Posted by Pete Czeria on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 10:17 AM
  • If first baseman drops ball getting it out of his glove after catching it, it's not a catch. No force out.

-- Posted by Pete Czeria on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 10:24 AM
  • Can someone post a link to the replay?

  • so Pete, a 3b catches a line drive to end an inning and runs over the mound on his way to the dugout to and drops the ball on the mound with his glove... it's an error and the inning isn't over?

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 11:06 AM
  • In high school rules, it's not a catch.

  • Holcomb faithful? Yes. Relative? Unfortunately not. As you can see I have posted twice, and neither have been to drop names, or report scores, make excuses, or offer "congrats" like those types of posters do. Everybody knows who won the games. I just considered the compliments of another poster to be very backhanded and tried to defend the town I am from. Regardless, it's high school baseball and not life or death: Climb off your high horse.

-- Posted by No sir on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 11:45 AM
  • Pete, good attempt but that rule you posted says a fly ball.. this was not a fly ball

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 11:52 AM
  • Same principal in high school rules. When I get home, I'll look it up.

-- Posted by Pete Czeria on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 11:56 AM
  • no sir, the reason I said Chaffee's defense beat them is because they haven't hit all year and I didn't expect them to hit well yesterday. I did expect better defense.. Pitching as alright given the circumstances of using our number one on a days rest coming off a complete game 2 goiter against Valle, our number 3 not throwing in 2 weeks, and our number 2 having a knot in his shoulder from taking two foul tips on the shoulder while catching. We walked 4 I think and two were intentional.. so again, our defense beat us. Holcomb played much better defensively than we did.

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 12:00 PM
  • I guess every ump who has called the guy going into second on a double play out when the fielder dropped the ball during transition has been wrong.

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 12:32 PM
  • no sir, Long after the games are over (just like you said--its not life or death), the actions and attitudes of your cohorts and peers will be remembered. As Don Meyer once said, "you have to face the man in the mirror"

Cryptic?? perhaps. But look closer and the answer will be revealed.

-- Posted by Slim shady on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 12:43 PM
  • Dropping the ball on the exchange in a double play? The runner is safe.

  • Pete your an idiot

    -- Posted by I12 on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 1:15 PM
  • Either you are wrong Pete or the umpires are wrong. I've witnessed many arguments where the ump tells the 3rd base coach it was on the exchange as he gives the universal sign for dropping the ball on the exchange from the glove to the throwing hand.

    -- Posted by Goredhawks4life on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 1:18 PM
  • When you all get this all straightened out feel free to post updates for the NMCC quarterfinal today if anyone goes.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 1:30 PM
  • Dropping the ball on the exchange equals safe. Having the ball in the hand after getting it out of the glove equals the out. There's a difference.

    I12: Get a clue

-- Posted by Pete Czeria on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 1:38 PM
  • Pete, you've obviously never watched a double play attempt where the 2b/SS drop the ball while exchanging it to their hand in an attempt to throw the ball to first to complete the double play. that or ever ump in America Is wrong.

-- Posted by Thot McGee on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 1:50 PM
  • I stand corrected on some parts of the semantics of a catch.

SECTION 9 CATCH, CATCHER, CATCHER'S BOX

ART. 1 . . . A catch is the act of a fielder in getting secure possession in his hand or glove of a live ball in flight and firmly holding it, provided he does not use his cap, protector, mask, pocket or other part of his uniform to trap the ball.

The catch of a fly ball by a fielder is not completed until the continuing action of the

catch is completed. A fielder who catches a ball and then runs into a wall or another player and drops the ball has not made a catch. A fielder, at full speed, who catches a ball and whose initial momentum carries him several more yards

after which the ball drops from his glove has not made a catch. When the fielder, by his action of stopping, removing the ball from his glove, etc., signifies the initial action is completed and then drops the ball, will be judged to have made

the catch. The same definition of a catch would apply when making a double play. It is considered a catch if a fielder catches a fair or foul ball and then steps or falls into a bench, dugout, stand, bleacher or over any boundary or barrier, such as a fence, rope, chalk line, or a pregame determined imaginary boundary line from

the field of play. Falling into does not include merely running against such object.

(See 2-24-4 for fielder juggling ball and 8-4-1c for intentionally dropped ball; 2-16-2 and 5-1-1d for ball striking catcher before touching his glove.)

It is not a catch when a fielder touches a batted ball in flight which then contacts a member

of the offensive team or an umpire and is then caught by a defensive player.

-- Posted by Pete Czeria on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 2:56 PM
  • I think you guys are blowing this one call way out of proportion. Yes, at the time it seemed like it would be a crucial call. But in the end, Holcomb had more earned runs than Chaffee did. So if you take errors and the controversial call out of the game, the outcome is still the same.

-- Posted by bleacherking on Thu, May 23, 2013, at 3:10 PM
  • I agree bleacherking but Chaffee would have walked glover in the 6th if it were tied.

  • Listening to the all these comments by the Red Hat spokesperson for Chaffee is going a little over the top. I was at the game as well. Easy to see where the over aggression on the field comes from when you read these comments. Look at the pictures of the Holcomb second baseman on the DP. It would have made Ty Cobb proud. Or maybe remember the body block going into first on a routine ground out, It would have been a clean play in football. It's a game. One team wins and one team loses. Still whining about it a day later takes away from the that two teams full of teenage boys played a game. One team whether you think they were better or not won on that day. Quite taking away from the kids. Both teams deserve more credit and less blame than they are being given.
