Sikeston vs. Caruthersville
Posted by sideline starter on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 11:28 AM:

In what I am hoping is now a permanent fixture, Sikeston and Caruthersville go head-to-head tomorrow night down south in what will hopefully be an exciting game. Can the Tigers, led by Darrell Monroe, keep pace with the quick speed and pressure defense of Sikeston? Will the Bulldogs be able to respond to the Monroe barrage? And will another Tiger step up their game in attempt to down the defending Class 4 state champions? I'm interested to see how those questions are answered. Also, I'm excited to see how Cord Sheehy and Kyland Gross do for Sikeston as they continue to get more and more minutes. These two will be main cogs in the Sikeston machine next year and are finally getting a lot of PT. Anybody else have thoughts, questions, assertions, etc. that they want to share?

Replies

I agree, scott. I think that Sikeston will be able to hit shots and keep up the pressure. With that being said, I'm sure that Monroe will "get his." I would expect him to score 20+. I would guess the final could get to 10, but it is certainly within the realm of possibility for it to be 5. The Dogs will have to come with some intensity or they could make the hour drive back north licking their wounds. I think the Dogs will be ready, though, and will put out an exciting game. If it comes down to free throws, I like our chances.

If Sikeston plays like they did against Jackson, they can defeat just about anyone. The first quarter and a half will be crucial for them. If they can build a lead and the shooting is good in both shot selection and execution, we'll be fine. I think our defense has been great lately and is kind of getting back to where it was last year. Now, if we let Monroe take over early and give the rest of the Tigers confidence, it could be a long night. I'm excited about this game because I think there are a lot of different ways it could go. Hopefully, it'll go the way of the Bulldogs.

If you don't mind, put them on the scores for the week thread Scott. I'd appreciate it. And also, what are the big matchups?

-- Posted by sideline starter on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 11:57 AM

This game will not be close. Sikeston guards are too good for caruthersville, and Sikestonbg man is pretty decent. Wont be able to completely stop monroe but i think he will de a decent job. Charlestons starters were out in the 3rd quarter I believe. Im gonna say the same thing happens in this game. Sikeston by 15

In order for Caruthersville to win, they will have to have more production from someone other than Darrell Monroe. Caruthersville handles the press pretty good, it didn't bother them to much against Charleston or Dyer County. The Tigers problem is shooting and rebounding. Our shooting has been horrible this season, which it has improved some from earlier in the year but to beat a team like Sikeston, you have to make your open shots and make the tip ins. We have to get more physical on the boards other than Darrell Monroe. This Tiger team to me doesn't respond well with physicality. Monroe will get his 20/10 like normal but if he gets in foul trouble or has a rare night off, expect it to get ugly quick. Cville has a legit chance to pull the upset though. Shoot decent, take smart shots and not force anything, it could get interesting. I just think the Tigers are too young and not exp enough for Sikeston.

If the guard play doesn't perform for C'ville, it could be a long night. Monroe will get his points.

Scott, I will be down there after practice to check out Ritter vs Vianney and Soldan vs Whitney Young. Should be a fun evening of basketball. Maybe I will bump into you there.

-- Posted by CHS2MRH on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 12:49 PM

C'ville by 10 with subs in the last quarter.

-- Posted by Pete Sims on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 1:07 PM

Against Caruthersville in Caruthersville, I'm not going to count this as a guarantee at all. When a team has a dominant player like Monroe, anything really can happen. Sikestons's great and deep guard play will hopefully be more than enough and I hope our rebounding isn't like it was last week. It is always tough to win on the road as you head south. Great fanbases and great atmospheres sometimes have an effect on these games. I'd like to see the venue be packed with Caruthersville fans for the sake of their team but I can't help but think it would help us if the place wasn't completely packed.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 1:21 PM

Trust me! If it's a big game like tomorrow night is, the place will be packed early. Against Hayti, the place was packed before halftime of JV game. Should be an electric atmosphere tomorrow.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 1:23 PM

I'm taking Sikeston by 15 or more. The Bulldogs are better at 4 out of the 5 spots on the floor.

-- Posted by I.P. Freely on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 1:36 PM

Cheese, where is a great place to eat as I make my way to the game tomorrow!?

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 1:44 PM

bockmajor, you and me coulds go ate at Chuddys wich is close to where they are playing Bucko.

-- Posted by bearcat1forall on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 1:48 PM

Yeah I was going to add to everyone coming to the game tomorrow. Eat before you come to the game. No food or drinks allowed in the gym. I understand what they are trying to do, I really am but it's non sense. Who wants to stand in a small hallway, with a lot of people shoulder to shoulder and eat and drink? Not me! Hope this get's changed real soon. Next weeks Conference Tourney is going to be a mess with all them teams and fans playing and no where to stand to eat or drink. To answer you question Buck, Caruthersville has no good place to eat like Sikeston does. All we really have are local places and they take 30-45 mins to get your food, so your best bet is to stop in Hayti and eat something quick. Not much down here in Pemiscot County.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 1:49 PM

I think Vianney will win, but dont ever count Ritter out. If Ritter can stop Vianney from getting into their half court sets, it will be a different story in the end.

Someone give me directions to gym please??

-- Posted by TFA on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 2:14 PM

Okay thanks for the heads up cheese! I'll either grab something quick at the Hayti exit, or leave a couple hours early at eat at Cubbys (chuddys ;) ).

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 2:30 PM

If your coming to Caruthersville from Hayti take this route. One turn and your there.

Once you pass Sonic Drive In, you will come to a four way light, stay straight on 3rd Street. Once you see the First State Bank on the left you will come to a four way, turn right on Ward Avenue. Just continue on that road for about a mile and you will run right into the high school. Can't miss it.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 2:43 PM

The rest of Cville's season comes down to one question, HOW DO THEIR GUARDS PLAY? When the guards have played well like against Bolivar and against Portageville Cville has looked unbeatable. When the guards show up and score 4 points each Cville is just an above average team. the other key is their 5th starter. They have tried a few different kids in that spot this season without getting much production. If Belton McWilliams steps up in that role for the Tigers they are an entirely different team. My prediction is Cville's guards will step up and McWilliams will come to play.

I agree 100% Bootheelhooper.

In defense to Belton McWiliams tho

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 3:20 PM

Wow, it left out my whole comment.. Let me try that again lol..

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Jan 26, 2012, at 3:26 PM

In defense to Belton McWilliams though, he has been having knee issues all season. Talked to his mom whom I have known for a long time, and she said he has had fluid built up on his knee. I can tell it has affected his jump shot and rebounding this season. If his knee gets any better, he will be back to form like he was during Districts last year.

Great Pork Steak!

Looks like I will have to settle for listening on the radio, really wanted to see this game. I have a sick child.

-- Posted by TFA on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 6:37 AM

Sikeston will win handily. I think they'll control the entire game but the final score might be relatively close, 10 points or so, but won't be indicative of the entire game. That's my guess.

-- Posted by GreatFun on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 9:01 AM

TFA 2 outta my 3 kids are sick, still gonna make the game...work is going to make me late though!!!

-- Posted by wheresthebeef on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 10:01 AM

Cheese or Beef, do home fans sit on the visitor side if there is overflow? I want to make sure I'll get a seat.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 10:42 AM

Yes Sideline. Visitors are always welcome on our side if the visitors side is full.

-- Posted by Rocket689 on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 11:02 AM

I think Sikeston will win easily in the JV contest. We had a couple players move away and a couple who can't play so we only have 6 available tonight. Depth will be an issue with them. We may dress out a few varsity players and leave them on the bench in case we get in foul trouble.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 12:34 PM

Cheese-you've had some that have moved? When I saw them at portageville i was real impressed with their 9th and 10th graders. In fact, I believed they were the most talented group around.

-- Posted by GSP on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 12:48 PM

Yes! Last game we only had 6 JV players dress out. We had to have a couple Varsity players on the bench in case of foul trouble. It wasn't any starters that moved i don't think, just a couple off the bench.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 12:59 PM

Wheresthebeef im still hoping he gets better but being his mom I kinda have to stay home with him.

-- Posted by TFA on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 1:16 PM

I sooo want to go to this game, wonder how much Tylenol I can give him at a time. Joking here

-- Posted by TFA on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 1:19 PM

starting point guard off the JV moved and the 6th man on the bench who was a freshman that was arguably the most talented kid on the entire JV. They are cousins that live with grandma and moved to Oklahoma. They will probably be back but that is a big loss for the JV Tigers. Cville dressed 6 kids on Tuesday vs Malden because those 2 moved plus 2 more kids were hurt plus the 4 sophs that already play varsity.

-- Posted by gocvilletigers on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 1:32 PM

I look for SHS seniors to step up an get the job done.Jamison is the best guard in the area because he brings a total package steals, assist, points, rebounds.. Nothing like a Guard who recognizes his teammates. Best assist guard I've seen n a long time. McGee will always work hard on defense when he's converting beyond the arc he's automatic Coleman is playing better Warfield needs to be a beast on the boards. I will get to see Monroe for the first time should be interesting. SHS by 15....

-- Posted by stlfan38 on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 2:58 PM

What u wearing cheese so I will know who to call out lol

-- Posted by stlfan38 on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 3:03 PM

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 3:12 PM

Just wave at me and I'll come down to say hello, then it's back to my seat lol.. Seats are hard to get on home side.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 3:14 PM

Hey TSA why give them that much Tylenol when you could just use 2 Aleve!!!! HAH

-- Posted by wheresthebeef on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 3:41 PM

So I need to go buy aleve then and he will be good! Getting late I better hurry. Funny that u put tsa instead of tfa cause those initials could work also with my maiden name.

-- Posted by TFA on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 8:42 PM

Sikeston wins 79-71. Great atmosphere and a really fun, tense game. Glad we came out on the winning end. And shoutout to Mr. Automatic, Terry Jamison, for icing another game.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 8:47 PM

We played a great team tonight and failed to beat them because of poor free throw shooting. We had other guys step up in the scoring department, rebounded well for the size we had on the court and made the easy buckets around the rim. Caruthersville played with 6 people tonight, and Monroe played the whole game and seemed like he never missed a beat, I do think he should have passed it a few times when he was getting triple teamed under the basket but he is a gamer...Sikeston you got the best Caruthersville had to offer tonight so congrats on beating them.

-- Posted by wheresthebeef on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 9:06 PM

Yea they made it good cheating 5 points on a 3 point play stayed on 5 fouls forever although they were being called for fouls to keep SHS out the bonus an then gave Ruffin 5 fouls when he had 4.. Like I stated earlier seniors stepped up Warfied rebounding Coleman hit clutch shots Caleb played defense well an Jamison straight clutch from free throw line 8 n a row to seal the win with 10 assist r so... It was a scarey sight cheese in your house.. Monroe is no sophomore can't be lol

-- Posted by stlfan38 on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 9:08 PM

It really was a phenomenal game and atmosphere Beef and I'd like to thank the Caruthersville administration and fans for being so accommodating. Also, big props to JT Jones getting 13 points and 17 rebounds.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 9:09 PM

Oh and reading up, RED DIRT DOG, I have no idea what that garbage was, I would much rather see the pep band out there as they were last week....I heard the filth blaring from those speakers and even from a fans point of view I was embarrassed, even though I had no control or no idea it was fixing to be played.

-- Posted by wheresthebeef on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 9:10 PM

Sorry but Monroe is a sophmore. Just think, he will be around another 2 years both on the field and the court. I'm not even going to address that other crap your talking about. No one was cheating anyone. Good win by Sikeston, they hit clutch free throws and we didn't hit any at all. That basically sums up the game for us. Poor free throw shooting. Sikeston is a great team and to play them as tough as we did, not give up when we were down by almost 20 says something about this young Tiger team. I'll be rooting for sikeston the rest of the way! Shout-out to all the posters man enough to meet me! You guys were great, it was great to meet all of you!

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 9:17 PM

Sorry I didn't get to say hello cheese! Wasn't sure which guy you were!

That's cool man..there is always next time

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 9:35 PM

There wasn't any cheating with Vashawn on fouls, just a misunderstanding between officials and the record keeper. In the second or third, Caleb McGee committed a foul. This was accidentally attributed to Vashawn instead (Caleb is #23, V is #24). Shortly after, it was realized that Caleb should have one more foul than he did and he received the foul. There was no addition to the team fouls but the foul was never subtracted from Vashawn's total in the official scorebook. Derek James of Sikeston had it correct in his scorebook, but the home team scorebook was official and had V with Caleb's foul still as well as Caleb receiving it. Technically, Vashawn only fouled four times but was given five. However, I find it very hard to believe that this was purposeful. Just a misunderstanding. Just wanted to clear that up for everyone.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 9:47 PM

Great game tonight both teams. Great sportsmanship on both sides and two teams that played very hard. These Tigers have fixed all the little problems they had through the season whether it was rebounding or missing easy shots. Free throws is next on the check list. When the Tigers fix that they are going to be a handful. Sikeston is a great team. They all shoot the ball so good and they are also great passers. It was a fun game to watch for the fans so again congrats to both teams.

-- Posted by gocvilletigers on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 10:15 PM

For those that watched the game, how do both stack up for a run in the playoffs?

-- Posted by barkleyfan on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 10:22 PM

Sikeston is going to state in Clss 4. There is no doubt in my mind. I haven't seen the other teams in their district but I thought Sikeston was as good or better than a lot of other teams Cville has played this year. Cville will have a tough time in Class 3 beating Charleston, Kennett, Doniphan, and NMCC. That is just a tough district in my opinion. Cville could do it but it would be an upset.

-- Posted by gocvilletigers on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 10:44 PM

3 very good teams and a legit #1 team in class 3 dist tnmt. I just do not see anyone in our dist beating charleston. Very strong dist though. Sikeston will make a run if they get by ND, don't think they can repeat though.

-- Posted by INDIAN DAWG on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 10:44 PM

I was just saying it was alot of weird circumstances. The score board goes off we lose two points an Cville gained two points.lol.It was a good game.Monroe is a beast.

-- Posted by stlfan38 on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 10:49 PM

Charleston is the favorite until someone knocks them off.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 11:05 PM

Cheese and Beef, it was nice meeting you tonight. You guys have a lot to look forward to. Great game tonight. I was glad to see Sikeston win, but C-ville never gave up and kept in it. Good luck in districts!

-- Posted by rocketsbro (Moderator) on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 11:08 PM

One more thing I just thought about: I'd like to give a big "Thank You" to all the Sikeston fans who made the trip down tonight and didn't stop cheering for the boys. It felt a lot like the district game with ND from last year and the boys definitely respond when they can hear their town is behind them even on the road. Let's get that type of enthusiasm at every game from here on out. Be loud, be proud, and support your Bulldogs to hopefully another state title!

-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 11:17 PM

It wasn't cheating. Just an honest mistake by the Cville scorebook keeper. A crucial mistake though as Vashawn had to leave the game....Sikeston then subsequently turned the ball over about three straight times....11 point lead down to 4 very quickly. But I'm very impressed with Cville. Extremely dangerous. Very nice gym and great game tonight by both teams.

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 11:18 PM

What about cvilles gaurds? it wasn't all on monroe tonight

-- Posted by Iluvball on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 11:47 PM

Guards started off sluggish but they really picked it up. They play like this every game, they would be a handful to anyone. They didn't just play your average team tonight. Sikeston is one of the very best class 4 has to offer and cville had a chance to win. Only if we made free throws, we could have been talking about a HUGE upset. Sikston was clutch!!!!

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Jan 27, 2012, at 11:53 PM

I second what rocketsbro and starter said....cheese, beef....nice to meet you guys! I enjoyed talking hoops with you guys. Good luck the rest of the way!

-- Posted by Rocket689 on Sat, Jan 28, 2012, at 12:28 AM

I think if they play again next year or the year after that, Cville will win.

-- Posted by Tigersfan on Sat, Jan 28, 2012, at 10:03 PM

To assume that Caruthersville would beat Sikeston in any future games is going out on a long limb. I know Sikeston will lose alot of players after this year but that core of younger guys that they have could beat the majority of varsity teams out there.

They have a lot of size not just height wise but those kids are built well. I was impressed with their passing abilities and pressure defense. Our JV is lacking a few components but still a pretty decent team. Due to our small school size the better players that are supposed to be playing JV (Monroe and Johnson) are having to play at the varsity level and have been since they were freshmen.
