High School Basketball Forum: Tuesday Night District Semifinals (2/28/12)

Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 1:47 PM:

Ten more exciting match-ups in district play tonight in the semifinals of Classes 1, 2, and 3. For brevity's sake, I've abbreviated the words "Class" and "District," so for example, Class 1, District 1 appears as C1, D1.

1. C1, D1: Risco vs. Clarkton @ Risco, 6 p.m.

2. C1, D1: North Pemiscot vs. Gideon @ Risco, 7:30 p.m.

3. C1, D2: SCC vs. Richland @ Oak Ridge, 6 p.m.

4. C1, D2: Oak Ridge vs. Delta @ Oak Ridge, 7:30 p.m.

5. C1, D3: South Iron vs. Zalma @ Poplar Bluff, 6 p.m.

6. C1, D3: Eminence vs. Leopold @ Poplar Bluff, 7:30 p.m.

7. C2, D3: Advance vs. Chaffee @ Greenville, 6 p.m.

8. C2, D3: Oran vs. Lesterville @ Greenville, 7:30 p.m.

9. C3, D3: Scott City vs. West County @ West County, 6 p.m.

10.C3, D3: Clearwater vs. Saxony Lutheran @ West County, 7:30 p.m.

Among the more exciting match-ups will be North Pem. vs. Gideon; Oak Ridge vs. Delta (rubber match between the two teams); Chaffee vs. Advance; and Eminence vs. Leopold. Many of the other games will probably be blow-outs.

Please feel free to post updates and finals on all these games! Much appreciated!

Any thoughts or predictions, semoball fans? Any big potential upsets?

Clarkton hates Risco. Don't be surprised if Risco comes out of this one a little but worse for the wear. They had something like two or three injuries from the last time those two teams played.

  • I Predict SC defeats West County by 17.

  • Should make for some exciting games tonight, Sideline!

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 3:06 PM
  • I don't think Risco and Clarkton will get to out of hand tonight like it did earlier this season. The refs were popping people with Techs pretty quick yesterday.

  • Keep us posted on Scott City, Rachel.

    -- Posted by joefrank78 on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:13 PM
  • West County leads Scott City 12-10 after one. Cotner hurt in locker room.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:18 PM
  • West County leads 21-15. Cotner back. Both teams on bonus with 4:26 to go before the half. WC driving to the basket at will right now. SC missed some easy shots early but got lift from bench.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:23 PM
  • Bit of a shocker in the early going. What happened to Cotner?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:27 PM
  • West County leads the Scott City boys 31-24 at halftime. Cotner hurt his shoulder, but came back with four minutes to go in half.

If SC is going to win I think probably the WC drives will need to be curtailed and Cotner and Ryan Brock are going to have to get some scores inside. Both had some chances in first half. Both shot poorly. But what do I know? In all seriousness, those are just my thoughts and they come with no guarantee. It will be an interesting second half.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:37 PM
  • Scott City is a second half team.

    -- Posted by joefrank78 on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:41 PM
  • 48-25 SCC boys lead Richland at halftime.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:41 PM
  • Risco 38-34 lead over Clarkton at half

-- Posted by kdjones on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:41 PM
  • I definitely expect a better second half, joefrank.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:42 PM
  • SC shot 9 of 26 from the floor in the first half. Third quarter about to start.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:43 PM
  • Early timeout for WC. SC closed lead to 31-29.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:47 PM
  • Brock on the bench to start the half. He got his third foul late in second quarter.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:48 PM
  • Risco is in big trouble unless they start to make shots. Clarkton having their way inside.

-- Posted by bootheelhooper on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:48 PM
  • 39-36 WC. 2:51 left in third.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:56 PM
  • The sound of a whistle is, um, prevelent tonight. For both sides... Brock has four now. As does WC player.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:57 PM
  • WC leads 43-38 after the third.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 6:58 PM
  • Sorry 45-38.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 7:00 PM
  • There was a huge upset last night in c3 d2. Are we seeing another in c3 d3? This would be a shocker!

  • Back-to-back 3s for SC cuts WC lead to 47-46. 5:46 left.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 7:03 PM
  • SC has taken what I believe is it's first lead of the game. Up 52-50. 2:02 left.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 7:22 PM
  • Wow! Risco really poured it on in the 2nd half!

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 7:23 PM
  • Brock to line. 4.5 left.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 7:23 PM

Risco must be on fire in the 2nd half, to have only scored 38 at half and now having 91 with four mins to play! Wow

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 7:24 PM
  • Brock makes 1 of 2, which is just enough. WC 3 at buzzer goes but Scott City wins 61-60.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 7:25 PM
  • Congrats Scott City! Survive and advance! I must admit I really didn't think this game would be anywhere near that close.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 7:26 PM
  • congrats to Risco, but I still hope whoever wins the Gideon/North Pemiscot game wins the district.

    -- Posted by semoballer13 on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 7:39 PM
  • Like I said risco had to make shots and man they were on fire in the 2nd half. Clarkton just lost their composure. It was a total meltdown. Risco plays like that they can beat anybody.

-- Posted by bootheelhooper on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 7:41 PM

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 8:12 PM
  • Rachel, is the last Clearwater-Saxony score you posted a halftime score? Also, that's a real low total for halftime between OR and Delta. Neither team must be shooting well.

Second huge upset in as many nights in Class 3. Maplewood is downed by Carnahan 65-64. All the favorites need to be on notice. Treat every game like it is your last because it may just end up that way.

    Wow big upset!

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 8:19 PM
  • *

Crazy ending to that game too. Apparently, MRH blocked Carnahan's shot with little time left. There was a scrum on the ground for the loose ball. MRH kid got it and tried to call a timeout with none left. Carnahan drilled both the technical free throws to win the game. Hate that a game has to end like that for the poor kid.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 8:30 PM
  • Shades of the Fab 5 a few years ago in March Madness. You do feel bad for the poor kid though. That is a huge upset though. MRH was ranked #3 in Class 5 in the last poll I saw.

  • Big time win for a short-handed oak ridge team. Thought they stepped it up big time in the second half offensively and defensively. They can definitely play with SCC on thurs if their starting guard makes it back.

-- Posted by OAKRIDGEBLUJAYS on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 9:58 PM
  • Gideon is a really good ball team! They can play with anyone any given night! Theve had some down nights but they also beat malden and hayti! We only beat them by one at risco so thursday night will be a barn burner! Two schools with really great kids!

  • Scott City 61, West County 60.

    Saxony Lutheran 50, Clearwater 44.

  • scott city will have to play poorly for saxony to have a chance imop.

-- Posted by GSP on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 10:24 PM
  • Agreed GSP that game could go either way, but like you I expect South Iron to win.

Exalmanian, I give you props, you're the only one to predict the Clearwater upset, so far be it from me to doubt you! SC clobbered SL on their home floor earlier this season, but the Crusaders are obviously playing much better now. It sounds like the Rams got in foul trouble early tonight. If that happens in the title game, it could spell disaster for SC!

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 10:25 PM
  • Gideon is a tough matchup for Risco for the same reason Holcomb was: Size. Most people want to talk about how SCC is Risco's greatest threat in class 1, and I do think SCC would win that matchup in a close game. However, Risco can matchup there decent. What I don't know is if there is a class 1 team out there who has size underneath, some depth, and guards who play strong enough with the ball to survive the full court pressure. If there is such a team, that will be who Risco will struggle most with. Holcomb has had success with that in their meetings with Risco this year, and Gideon did as well. With that said, I'm just not sure Gideon is quite deep enough to pick them, but they are capable.

-- Posted by No sir on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 10:27 PM
  • Preach, we had a little foul trouble but we just didn't play well. Missed way too many easy shots and got out hustled on the boards. Look for a different team Thursday. I hope Coach D has a good "discussion" with the boys before the Saxony game. They need it. If we come in with the mindset that we beat them by 19 last month on their homecourt it will be upset city!

    -- Posted by Ronnie1 on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 10:34 PM
  • i heard dom porter only played like 2 minutes in the game against richland and they still beat them by 40 plus, maybe they are getting there crap together and going to make a run for state.. and oak ridge only beat delta by 12, i really dont see them beating scc in the championship if scc keeps playing like that

    -- Posted by big_daddy1694 on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 10:37 PM
  • If oak ridge can get by SCC, they will present that exact problem to Risco. They have a lot of size and a lot of depth at all positions.

-- Posted by OAKRIDGEBLUJAYS on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 10:42 PM
  • SCC is going to be hard to take down, no matter who they play in Class 1. Not impossible but no one will blow them out imo.

    -- Posted by Ronnie1 on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 10:42 PM
  • Ronnie1, it sounded like Cotner was injured in the game. Any update on his status?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 10:44 PM
  • did scc play the subs the entire 4th qrt? or did the starters stay in?

    -- Posted by big_daddy1694 on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 10:46 PM
  • He's fine...old football injury...LOL

    -- Posted by Ronnie1 on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 10:47 PM
  • Dom didn't play a lot, think he was hurt. Richland is awful, delta or oak ridge would best them by 30+. They don't have a guard that would start for any of the top three teams in the district.

Oak ridge was down a starter tonight, don't know if he will play thurs or not. OR outscored SCC in the last three quarters of their last matchup, and had it down to 7 or 8 early in the 4th. That was at SCC, thurs will be at OR. If they are healthy and hit outside shots, OR Willie in the game. SCC has a really tough match up with OR's size.

-- Posted by OAKRIDGEBLUJAYS on Tue, Feb 28, 2012, at 10:50 PM
  • Meant OR will be in the game

  • SCC has a way of playing very physical w/o fouling. Just from my experience playing at OR its definately "hands off". The refs up there usually call a very tight game both ways. OR's coach even kicked SC out of a shootout last Summer because they were too physical. Not saying the refs favor one team or the other, they just call it very close.

  • I think the real question is going to be can OR handle SCC's full court press? If they're down a starting guard, that doesn't bode well for OR. Also, OR will have to play good perimeter defense to stop SCC from raining threes. But if Dom Porter doesn't play, that will be a big equalizer for OR.

  • Ronnie, u really going there again on the summer shootout. The refs for districts are chosen by all the district teams.

Quit trying to compare summer ball and reg/post season. I have no idea why all of u guys in SC think everyone is against you.

As for the press. It gave OR fits in the first qrtr, but after that they got a lot of layups out of it.

Below played well tonight, battled a little foul trouble in the first. Dominated the boards and had plenty of blocks.

  • OAKRIDGEBLUJAYS...I'm not comparing Summer ball and Regular Season. I'm stateing a simple fact. We have played in OR on numerous occassions and its ALWAYS the same. Fouls that are overlooked in other gyms are called in your's. Even on the grade school level. I've coached our little guys for 5 years. We played and won your tournament for our age group I think every year, I'd have to go back and confirm that. Its the same for the little kids, even 3rd grade which everyone knows is just a football game anyway. They let nothing go in any age group 3rd-Varsity. OAK...I'm not saying they favor you guys, just saying they call a very, very close game.

  • I have said it all alone. You have to show up mentally ready to play each game. We shouldn't have been in that situation. But its part of playoff basketball. You can't over look anyone and kids these days have to understand that. Its a tough loss and great lesson learned. Feel bad for my 2 seniors. We will return 11 guys from this years team. 8 juniors, 2 sophomores and one frosh. Word to my CHS Bluejays, don't take it for granted what you did in your regular season. It matters none. Play from here on in, like its your last day ever playing. Tomorrow is not promised. Go BlueJays!!!
