Top 5 teams coming into the season!
Posted by Cheesehead. on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 2:52 PM:

A little change of debate topic here. Who are your top 5 teams coming into the season. I'm not talking about last year or 10 years ago but base your opinion on who each team has THIS year.

My top 5 are:

1.Sikeston

2.Jackson

3.Kennett

4.Charleston

5.Caruthersville

I know I'll take a ton of heat for the Charleston ranking but they lost a ton of talent from last year. I just don't see them being as dominate again this year. Still better than most teams in the area. I'm not claiming to know it all by any means and I could be WAY off but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Replies

I find it interesting that SCC is not in the top 5 now. 4 straight state championships and not in the top 5, but then again they did lose their head coach to nasty circumstances. The school only has the school board to blame for that mess.

-- Posted by Jolly Dump on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 3:08 PM

For me, the Top 5 teams are:

1. Charleston

2. Sikeston

3. Kennett

4. Bernie

5. Caruthersville

Jackson definitely has some talented players coming back, but they just didn't live up to it last year. We'll see if this season is different for the Indians. For Caruthersville, the key is going to be if Monroe can get some help. For Kennett, I hear Antonio Primer is injured to start the season. I think the surprise team this season is Bernie. Hopefully, they can avoid the off-the-court problems that derailed their season last year. Also, it will be interesting to see how SCC does with Otto Porter's little brother playing varsity as a freshman. Big shoes to fill! Hope its not too much pressure for the young man.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 3:09 PM

I think Darrell will have some help this year. Jamal Johnson is a great guard along with Steve Rogers. My main concern for Cville is the coaching. How will the players respond to his coaching style? Those kids loved Coach Heeb so how they react to the new coach is still up in the air. No knock on the coach at all. I don't know the man personally.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 3:14 PM

And your right Preach, I was debating the whole Bernie/Cville ranking. We beat them last year and we return everyone but Elbie Fonda so that's why I gave us the edge.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 3:16 PM

Kennett might still be a year away.

-- Posted by semo7178 on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 3:19 PM

Yeah, Caruthersville has everyone except Fonda back and hopefully will be able to keep the team on the court what with the silliness in their administration and all. They are a sleeper in Class 3. I'm curious about your logic with Jackson Cheese. I agree with you that they are going to be good this year. Hadn't thought about them as #2 in the area. Not that I disagree, I just want to know your thinking behind it.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 3:20 PM

I gotcha Cheese. Bernie has some JV kids moving up this year that can really shoot the rock from outside. Should be an exciting season of hoops!

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 3:20 PM

Well they were very young last year. Sophmore and Junior heavy team. Obviously have good size on the inside and outside. Karson King will be one of the premiere players in the area IMO. He will have some good players along side him in Stevens,Duame, and McDowell. I think they will surprise a few teams this year. Still a fairly young team but added a year of exp under their belt. Like I said, I could be way off here but that's how I see it as of right now. I guess you could switch spots 2-4 and you could have an arguement for either team. I do think Charleston lost too much to be ranked #2 though.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 3:42 PM

1) Sikeston

2) Charleston

3) Kennett

4) Jackson

5) Caruthersville

That would be my order, but truthfully I think any of those 5 could be beaten by any of the others on any given night. I have a few question marks with each one, but I do think going into the season that Sikeston is the clear favorite with Charleston behind them.

-- Posted by sm0723 on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 3:46 PM

The 5 listed are definitely the cream of the crop. A case could be made for Charleston or Sikeston at 1 or 2. The other 3 could be mixed in some fashion as well. I do think the teams listed are the top 5.

-- Posted by Rocket689 on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 3:51 PM

Charleston is still going to be tough I think. Sikeston will be but as far as the others idk I can't remember from last year. What about Notre Dame?

-- Posted by TFA on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 4:21 PM

ND is always competitive TFA, but will probably be down this season as opposed to last season IMO.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 4:23 PM

Charleston

Sikeston

Kennett

ND

SCC

Guys we lost tucker, cassel, gray & Scott that is a lot but when you take in the fact who started & who actually played the most during the run to & in state, you wouldn't think that... For most of the state games it was tucker, carter, parham, hull & gray... I'm telling you now we may even be better, for sure more balance... Will be a very deep & long team with great guard play off bench... Parham, hull, Watkins, carter & cooper starters del & Robert bogan , foster, Davis, Webster bench...

-- Posted by He hate me on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 10:51 PM

Caruthersville will be way too big and athletic for Bernie in my opinion. Really overwhelmed them last year. So Caruthersville should be on the list over them to me.

-- Posted by No sir on Wed, Oct 31, 2012, at 11:40 PM

What do you know about NMCC

-- Posted by thekidfrankie on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 12:29 AM

I have no idea who will win this year between Bernie and Caruthersville; however, I think you will see a different dynamic on the Bernie team this year. With the JV team members moving up to varsity full time this year, it should be a successful year. I could be wrong, but I think that some of the games that were less than competitive last year will be a lot more competitive this year.

-- Posted by bluemules89 on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 12:35 AM

1. Sikeston/Charleston

3. Jackson

4. Bernie

5. Kennett

No disrespect to Caruthersville, I just didn't get to see them play last year. I think SCC will have the biggest drop off but still play the toughest schedule. I know this is said every year but I think we'll finally have a down year in basketball. Down year or not, I can't wait till after Thanksgiving.

-- Posted by Fatboy1972 on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 6:20 AM

Due to some key injuries I think Kennett may get off to a slow start. They have Mitchell who can just about get it done by himself but the question is can they overcome a slow start and the pressure of being in 4A now. Should be interesting. When everyone is healthy they will have talent coming out their eyeballs. To bad they are not in 3A anymore, I could have seen them winning it all.

-- Posted by X-Man on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 6:53 AM

I know Kennett has Mitchell and Primer. What else do they have that is proven at the Varsity Level? I mean no disrespect by the way, I am just unfamiliar with what they have returning that would have them so highly though of. I knew they lost Grantham, and he did alot of things right for them inside. All I'm familiar with is Mitchell and Primer.

-- Posted by No sir on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 10:59 AM

What about the Boys from Hayti Heights? they made a nice run in the playoffs any of you bootheelers know what they got coming back?

-- Posted by BillShakespeare on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 11:08 AM

Depends on the style of game. Hayti will return some size and athleticism. However, they struggled to score last year and will likely will again after losing the Bootheel POY as well as their only perimeter threat. They need scores to be in the 40's, and at most 50's to be comfortable. If they can get you into a half court slugfest, they have a chance. Unfortunately though they are in a brutal district where they will likely be a 4 or 5 seed. (Bernie, Portageville, Holcomb, South Pem).

-- Posted by No sir on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 11:15 AM

I know some of you don't believe that Jackson should be in the top 5, but don't sleep on them. They have a lot of talent, and have really progressed. I saw them play a couple of times this summer, and they looked really good!

-- Posted by REDDIRT DOG on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 1:12 PM

I think Kennett has some young talent on the team that can hang with the older guys. I'm not saying they will win state or even districts but think they will have a good season.

-- Posted by X-Man on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 1:25 PM

Sideline---I'm giving a basketball insight!..I heard at Central that the Booker kid that played guard last year is out for this year. That's my one yearly post! HA!

-- Posted by bulletman on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 1:48 PM

They probably aren't a top 5 area team, but a team that really stood out to me this summer was Leopold. I think they pose a very legitamite threat to end SCC's run this year. Not saying they will, but they have a team that can compete with just about anyone

-- Posted by 6+4+3=2 on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 1:54 PM

bullet....is he hurt or just not playing?

-- Posted by Rocket689 on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 1:58 PM

I can't say a lot on here but he isn't hurt..Central also had a very good point guard that was a junior move to Ohio. Name a Devon Johnson. He was very quick..Think he played travel ball with JT and some of the Sikeston juniors..

-- Posted by bulletman on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 2:03 PM

Kennett has Mitchell and Primer and also Drake, who was their starting point guard last year, very quick. Primer has a football injury but should practice in about 2 weeks, will be dressed for first game at the Riverbend. Mitchell is 6'4 now and Primer is 6'4 and about 240 lbs., both have improved their game from last year. They have a very good freshmen class and will probably move a couple of those guys up. That district will certainly be one of the toughest in the state.

-- Posted by bball79 on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 2:29 PM

1. Jackson

2. Sikeston

3. Charleston

4. Cape

5. Kennet

-- Posted by CTalum5 on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 3:10 PM

Understood bullet....absolutely no reason to run a kid's name through the mud. I'm glad you didn't state it.

-- Posted by Rocket689 on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 3:25 PM

Bullet, I had heard the same thing. Hadn't heard the reasons (obviously they don't matter for the discussion) but I had heard Booker was out. Thanks for confirming. Do you or anyone else know who is back who got significant time last year besides Cox?

bball79, I'm in agreement with you too. Class 4 District 1 will be the toughest district in Class 4 in the state.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 3:38 PM

I'm sure word will get out when basketball starts and the kids start talking...They'll have Mikey Jones, Boreboom and Garan Evans but they are both still playing football (not intended to be a shot). Along with Cox they'll have the Wilferth kid who is about 6'7". They apparently have a really good freshman class with a very good point guard that will probably play varsity. That's about all I know.

-- Posted by bulletman on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 3:51 PM

1.Sikeston

2.Charleston

3.Kennett

4.NMCC

5.Bernie

6.Caruthersville

-- Posted by BBfanatic on Thu, Nov 1, 2012, at 4:49 PM

1. Sikeston

2. Charleston

3. Bernie

4. Kennett

5. Caruthersville

-- Posted by paulbd on Fri, Nov 2, 2012, at 7:14 AM

1. Sikeston/Charleston (have pretty much their whole teams back)

2. Jackson.. (will have a huge height advantage over pretty much every team they play avg. 6'5" and has almost everyone back)

3. Kennett

4. Cape (will have a decent squad but not as good as last year's)

5. Bernie/CVille

-- Posted by footballfan29 on Fri, Nov 2, 2012, at 9:00 AM

Charleston may miss Greg Tucker just a little bit. He was possibly the most clutch player in the area last season. That's a lot coming from a Sikeston fan. Jamaul Gray and Aaron Cassell will be missed, also.

Sikeston will miss Terry Jamison, Caleb McGee, Kilron Coleman, and Keldon Warfield.

The main difference Sikeston and Charleston have from most other schools is their ability to re-load. They have lots of talent waiting for their chance to be a starter that have seen significant varsity minutes.

-- Posted by yah-yah on Fri, Nov 2, 2012, at 9:20 AM

pre-season really dosen't mean much to a BRAVE..See you guys in March!

-- Posted by DA#1OLDCAT on Fri, Nov 2, 2012, at 9:56 AM

1. Sikeston

2. Kennett/Charleston

3. NMCC (These kids are going to be solid)

4. Caruthersville (Don't sleep on them)

-- Posted by dont worry on Fri, Nov 2, 2012, at 6:27 PM

Kennett had a loaded team before a player moved to Charleston and the big Primer boy got hurt and then 2 of the really good young kids also got hurt. I still think they are good but are not a threat to win the district. The top 5 will be Charleston, Sikeston, Kennett, Caruthersville, and Bernie. Don't sleep on New Madrid. They are very talented and have some great young players. Another team to watch is South Pem. Don't be shocked if they win the Class 2 district this year. They have a lot of talent coming back plus 2 key transfers that will help them. Also don't forget Holcomb won over 20 games last year and they have a great point guard and the 6'8 center who is a good player.

Class 2, 3, and 4 should all be a dogfight to see who gets out of the SEMO area. All 3 classes could make a run at Columbia. Class 1 will also be tough between Leopold, SCC, and South Iron. This will be a really strong year for basketball because there are a lot of good teams but no truly great team like SCC or Sikeston had a couple years ago.

-- Posted by bootheelhooper on Fri, Nov 2, 2012, at 10:03 PM

Who left Kennett for Charleston?

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Nov 2, 2012, at 10:11 PM

Shandor Webster, who played for Charleston last year, moved to Kennett during the summer and has moved back to Charleston. Only lived in Kennett a few months before coming back home where he's lived his entire life.

-- Posted by birdfan on Sat, Nov 3, 2012, at 8:47 PM

Shandor lived in Sikeston for a spell. He played 8th grade ball here. Great kid and made a lot of friends here. Wish he stayed!

-- Posted by semohoops on Sun, Nov 4, 2012, at 1:09 AM

You are right about Jackson's height this year. If they wanted to they could have a team on the floor with a 6-3 point guard being the smallest kid. Everyone else would be at least 6-5. However their best point guard is a kid that handles the ball like no one else anyone has seen in this area for a long time, maybe ever.

-- Posted by dadscatfood on Sun, Nov 4, 2012, at 1:45 AM

That sounds slightly hyperbolic.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Sun, Nov 4, 2012, at 6:27 AM

maybe "EVER" wow that's good, can't wait to see this guy!

-- Posted by DA#1OLDCAT on Sun, Nov 4, 2012, at 6:59 AM

I'm hoping ND might creep into the top 5 at some point, but at this point I'm not sure I'd even put them in the top 10. The last few years we always seemed to have at least 1 or 2 solid players left over from the previous years team, plus a couple decent underclassmen role players. This year, I don't think there's much returning at all, and not a lot of underclassmen to be excited about.

I think basketball in this area will be down YET AGAIN this year. Sikeston and Charleston will probably be tops, but even those teams lost quite a bit, and I don't see them being on quite the same level as last year. SCC will be down a lot. Hopefully there will be some surprises from some schools who haven't been as successful over the past few years.

-- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Sun, Nov 4, 2012, at 8:34 AM

Sounds like "dadscatfood" thinks he or one of his family members should be starting at point guard!! Poor Darin Scott...

-- Posted by bulletman on Sun, Nov 4, 2012, at 11:20 AM

Cat food says this kid handles the ball better than Derek Tipler, Marcus Biles, Shawn Sherrell, Bobby Hatchett, D.D. Gillespie, Dominitrix Johnson, ect.......Wow......Can't wait to watch Jackson play.

-- Posted by DaleDoback on Sun, Nov 4, 2012, at 12:17 PM

The best point guard ever? I seen that kid play last season and he is okay. But to say the best ever, com on man!!! And this semo ranking is a joke! To have Jackson ranked over Cville is pushing it too far. The Sikeston/Charleston rankings is okay but putting Jackson over all them other good teams is not cool. Having a tall team means nothing.

-- Posted by pe-co85 on Sun, Nov 4, 2012, at 7:07 PM

-- Posted by pe-co85 on Sun, Nov 4, 2012, at 7:08 PM

sideline, sorry but what does hyperbolic mean?

to all others go watch his handle this year and form your own thoughts. also watch the same kid who is 5-10 and how he can get above the rim.

-- Posted by dadscatfood on Sun, Nov 4, 2012, at 10:57 PM

In my opinion (and that of my esteemed colleagues), your claims of his skill seem a bit exaggerated (hyperbole means essentially the same thing) especially considering the talent of kids who have come through the area who could handle the ball both in recent years (Bobby Hatchett, Darryl Howard, Ryan Parham, etc.) and historically (see DaleDoback's list for just a few). No offense to the kid but I feel like we would have heard his name on here just a little bit if he "handles the ball like no one else anyone has seen in this area for a long time, maybe ever." What's his name so we can be on the lookout for him?

-- Posted by sideline starter on Sun, Nov 4, 2012, at 11:08 PM

not sure how you spell his last name. starts with D. Duame Daume? Kids he played with on Wolfpack team called him JD.

-- Posted by dadscatfood on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 12:10 AM

He played, last year. His looks remind me of a kid who used to live in C'ton, but it's not the same kid, of course. Pretty good ball handler but a stretch to put him in the same class as some of the aforementioned.

-- Posted by birdfan on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 6:29 AM

Sideline---He is a great kid. I didn't realize that is who he was referring to. I have watched him grow up playing soccer and basketball. He is a good player but good lord, to say he is the best ever is a HUGE exaggeration. He's not even the best that I have seen come through Jackson, much less the area..He's the same age as Karson King and Karson played varsity last year and Daume didn't. That being said, he is a very good kid from a very solid family.

-- Posted by bulletman on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 8:49 AM

I wish him good luck this year along with everybody else.

sorry, my bad, I see now that it is a basketball forum afterall. my mistake.

-- Posted by manjack on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 9:01 AM

A few people mentioned how "big" Jackson will be this year. They have been "big" for years. Sikeston and Charleston have shown that being "big" doesn't mean that much. Last year, Desoto had a starting lineup of 6'10", 6'8", 6'4", 6'0", and 5'11". Sikeston beat them twice. Size is good, but not a determining factor....at least in high school.

-- Posted by Rocket689 on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 10:07 AM

Forgot to mention....Sikeston's tallest player was 6'2".

-- Posted by Rocket689 on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 10:07 AM

Cape should be top 5 in my opinion. with evans and cox coming back.

-- Posted by CTFan on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 10:26 AM

even though we lost T.J., Cox will be the dominate force this year to come and if evans shows up in big games, Cape will surpise your top 5.

-- Posted by CTFan on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 10:29 AM

Agreed on the comment about size. When a team built around size matches up against a team built on athleticism and speed, the matchup comes down to three things:

1) Coaching: Who puts their kids in positions to succeed the most.

2) Point Guard Play: Maintaining the tempo that suits your team better than the other PG.

3) Officiating: This is an ugly fact but its true. Unfortunately crews fall into patterns. What I mean by that is some tend to call most of their fouls underneath on shots and rebounding. This of course favors the smaller team. Others call them away from the basket while guarding on the ball, this favors the bigger team.

-- Posted by Rocky09 on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 11:02 AM

Dadscatfood you must not watch Charleston basketball very much! We by far have one of the best point gaurds in the state of Missouri handling to ball for us this year! We also have an up coming all state point guard coming up! Remember this name. Delfincko Bogan! Also Charleston isn't going to be hurting any this year in their run for their 12th state title. Charleston has tons of experience coming back and will be just fine!

-- Posted by bluejaypride on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 1:45 PM

I have not seen the Cox kid from Cape play. Can someone tell me a little? Is he going to be better than Tisdale? I'm not from Charleston but Parham is best point in the area, maybe best player.

-- Posted by bball79 on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 2:27 PM

Cox definitely has the potential to be a better player than Tisdale. Much like his predecessor, Jamaal has been a little timid in showing the aggression needed to take his game to the next level. Tisdale showed a little bit of what he could do as an underclassmen, but didn't really come out of his shell until his senior year. I think Cox might be on a faster pace, and when he breaks out, he will be a handful for anyone in SEMO to guard.

-- Posted by DukePhan on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 4:10 PM

dadscatfod is obviously a HS kid that is jealous of Daume and is trying to make him look bad here. Daume is an very average player, at best. What this dadcatsfood has done is make him a target all year now for people here that think he is truly being hyped.

-- Posted by PatK on Mon, Nov 5, 2012, at 4:26 PM

I agree no one should sleep on Cape Cox put up some key points in a back up role to Tisdale. Sikeston will do well Ruffin is running point I think he is more a catch an shoot guard had quite a few turnovers handling the ball last year but I'm sure he worked over the summer. Ctown and Farmer always produces a stellar team. Bernie should b a handle full in their class.Alot of key players will be greatly missed from various schools. 2012-2013 is anybodies season hands down.I look for some under dog breakouts.

-- Posted by stlfan38 on Tue, Nov 6, 2012, at 5:23 AM

NMCC will be a very good team this year also who could be in the top 5 when it's all said and done with Delontre Haney moving from cape. Tre' was very atletic and one of capes best players in practice but got kicked off the team second semester. he never made an impact in games though.

-- Posted by CTFan on Wed, Nov 7, 2012, at 9:01 AM

Going a little further for fun:

1. Charleston

2. Sikeston

3. Kennett

4. Jackson

5. Cape

6. NMCC

7. Caruthersville

8. Bernie

9. South Pem

10 ND

Obviously, there are a lot of changes that could be made, and preseason doesn't mean anything, but fun to think about.

-- Posted by bball79 on Wed, Nov 7, 2012, at 11:34 AM

@ he hate me i think you have your starting lineup wrong Sumner Foster is starting over Cooper

-- Posted by BLUEjayMANdude on Wed, Nov 7, 2012, at 2:24 PM

Charleston is still a good team and still have a great guard leader in Ryan Parham (one of the best guards in the area. But the kid I wanna see is Delfincko Bogan play because I saw him in action a few times last season and I also seen Sikeston run a "box-1" on this kid. The kid is a straight out "SCORER" it's going to be nice seeing him and Parham on the floor together!

-- Posted by Crank22 on Wed, Nov 7, 2012, at 5:16 PM

Daume is honestly one of the best ball handlers I've ever played against.. If he gets his head in the game, you all are going to look dumb. Him and King have the potential to do big things (remember they are only juniors). King is the smartest player you'll find in the area, I can promise you that. I also believe charleston to be the best team in the area. I think they will be better without tucker. With a physical point guard like parham, it'll be hard to stop their offensive flow. As long as they play hard on defensive, they'll be great.

-- Posted by Bluecando on Tue, Nov 27, 2012, at 2:33 PM

This is the youngest ND team I can ever remember. They are likely going to start 4 sophomores Friday night. This year may be tough, but expect big things from these kids their jr and sr years.

-- Posted by V,B on Tue, Nov 27, 2012, at 7:42 PM

It will be especially rough for ND if there is a scout.

-- Posted by thunderstick on Tue, Nov 27, 2012, at 11:21 PM

Man I was way off lol. Sikeston is the only one I think I got right.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Dec 14, 2012, at 10:01 AM

3 out of 5 ain't bad Cheesehead. Caruthersville still has the talent to finish as one of the Top 5 teams. I don't see Jackson finishing in the Top 5 in the area however. Maybe when King and Daume are 100% they'll improve alot, we'll see.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Fri, Dec 14, 2012, at 1:37 PM

Big drop off after # 2 though.

-- Posted by ktown 5150 on Sat, Dec 15, 2012, at 6:06 PM

I see shs and chs on a level above, then kennett and nmcc and maybe jackson on next level, then not far behind is bernie, south pem, cville, and portageville also hayti. Lots of parity this year which makes for lots of opportunities and great games to watch.

Scc and doniphan also are gonna be there as well as many others , maybe things will sort themselves out after these Christmas tournies.
