Semofan72 suggested we rank the teams in each district instead of ranking all of the teams together. Here is how I would rank the teams in each district. I wouldn't take these rankings to Las Vegas, however. It is too early to accurately predict what will happen in district tournaments. I would also add some of these districts are "TOO CLOSE TO CALL." I hope to see some forum posters criticize my rankings and offer their own rankings.
Class 1 District 1 @ Gideon
1. North Pemiscot
2. Risco
3. Clarkton
4. Gideon
5. Delta C-7
6. Naylor
7. Southland
Commentary: I really like the Mustangs. But they are a young team. Risco plays well in tournaments. I will take North Pemiscot. But let's not forget Delta C-7 nearly defeated North Pemiscot in December.
Class 1 District 3 @ Delta
1. Scott County Central
2. Richland
3. Leopold
4. Bell City
5. Delta
6. Zalma
7. Marquand-Zion
Commentary: Scott County Central should win this district. The best game in this district could be a semifinal game between Richland and Leopold. I have not watched Delta, Zalma or Marquand-Zion play in several years. Therefore, my rankings regarding these teams could be inaccurate. I apologize in advance.
Class 2 District 1 @ Hayti
1. Portageville
2. Hayti
3. Campbell
4. South Pemiscot
5. Neelyville
6. Cooter
7. Holcomb
8. Senath
Commentary: This district is "TOO CLOSE TO CALL." In my opinion, four teams could win this district. I am taking Portageville. But I wouldn't bet money on this district. We could start an entire forum on which team will win this district.
Class 2 District 3 @ Oran
1. Bernie
2. Oak Ridge
3. Advance
4. Oran
5. Meadow Heights
6. Saxony Lutheran
7. Puxico
8. Chaffee
Commentary: It will be much easier to predict what will happen in this district after Advance plays Bernie. Let me rephrase my last statement. It will be much easier to predict the seedings in this district after Advance plays Bernie. I think this is a three team district that will be really exciting. The number 1 seed will have an advantage because they will not have to beat the number 3 seed and the number 1 seed on consecutive nights. We will never really know how good Oak Ridge is before this district starts. Oak Ridge will not play Bernie or Advance in the regular season. I think Oak Ridge is a legitimate team. But it is hard to judge how Oak Ridge will perform against Bernie and Advance. I think there is a chance we will see the two Stoddard County teams in the finals. But it is a special year for Oak Ridge. Oak Ridge played Jackson closer than Advance played Jackson. Therefore, I am going to give Oak Ridge some respect. If Advance beats Bernie in the regular season I will be forced to adjust my rankings. I would probably rank Advance 1, Oak Ridge 2, and Bernie 3 if Advance can get a win at Bernie.
Class 3 District 1 @ Kennett
1. NMCC
2. Kennett
3. Charleston
4. Caruthersville
5. Malden
6. East Prairie
7. Scott City
8. Kelly
Commentary:
This district is "TOO CLOSE TO CALL." I think NMCC has an advantage in this district because they have a legitimate center. Regular season games will help clarify which team should be seeded first. I think the first round games in this district will be blowouts. The semifinal games and the championship game should be amazing. The winner of this district could be on their way to Columbia.
Class 3 District 2 @ Twin Rivers
1. Arcadia Valley
2. Bloomfield
3. Clearwater
4. Twin Rivers
5. Doniphan
6. Woodland
7. Greenville
Commentary:
Arcadia Valley is the team to beat based on their record. Clearwater is ranked very high. Bloomfield won the district last season. I honestly have no idea what Arcadia Valley and Clearwater have this season. I think this will be a really exciting district. I am unsure if the winner of this district has a shot at the winner of the Kennett district in sectionals.
Class 4 District 1 @ Dexter
1. Sikeston
2. Notre Dame
3. Dexter
4. Fredericktown
5. St. Genevieve
6. Perryville
Commentary:
I know Notre Dame beat Sikeston at Notre Dame earlier this season. But I like Sikeston in the rematch. Don't overlook Dexter. Dexter has the district in their new facility.
Class 5 District 1 @ Poplar Bluff
1. Poplar Bluff
2. Cape Central
3. Jackson
Seckman and Northwest (Cedar Hill)?????
Commentary:
I really like Poplar Bluff. I think anything could happen if Cape Central and Jackson meet in the semifinals. I am unsure who will play Poplar Bluff in the finals. I know absolutely nothing about Seckman and Northwest (Cedar Hill). I do not recall these schools advancing to the finals of this district in previous seasons. I will get my first look at Seckman at the Tiger Shootout on Saturday. Does anyone know anything about Seckman or Northwest (Cedar Hill)???

I agree with most of your seedings. However, I dissagree with a few, not that it's really important or anything. Class 1, District 1 I would actually place Gideon over Clarkton for the 3 spot. Class 1, District 3 Zalma shoould be seeded either 4 or 5 (not that the seedings in this district matter because of SCC). Class 3, District 1 I would rank Kennett at 1. I understand your reasoning, but Kennett plays extremely great defense. That is their game plan.

I appreciate your thoughts. The reason I had Clarkton ahead of Gideon is because they had a win against Gideon earlier this season. I haven't seen Zalma or Delta. I am unsure who would win a Zalma / Delta game. The Class 3 district at Kennett is probably the most debateable district with the exception of the Class 2 District at Hayti.

When are state rankings released? Are there any sports writers out there than can tell me why we didn't see any state rankings before Christmas this year? Who made the decision to change when state rankings are released and why?
-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Jan 9, 2010, at 12:45 AM
Does anyone know when the state rankings are released?
Note: After watching Sikeston, Cape Central, Charleston, Notre Dame and Jackson play this weekend I am more confident my district rankings are accurate. I still like Sikeston over Notre Dame in the Class 4 District 1. I like Poplar Bluff and Cape Central in the finals in Class 5 District 1. I like Kennett and NMCC in the finals in Class 3 District 1. However, we will learn more about this district when NMCC plays Charleston on Tuesday. I am going to throw out an interesting question concerning Caruthersville. Should Caruthersville be seeded above Charleston in Class 3 District 1? I really don't know the answer to this question.
-- Posted by drawmules on Sun, Jan 10, 2010, at 7:54 PM
i wuld like kennett/nmcc in the finals but everyone knows wat charleston is capable of so we will see when districts come n hopefully nmcc/charleston will be a good, competitive game tuesday.

I would agree. However, if you take a look at Charleston's schedule the remainder of the season it is quite clear their schedule will tell us a great deal. Charleston may have the toughest schedule in Southeast Missouri the remainder of the season. Charleston will play NMCC, Scott County Central, Notre Dame, Kennett, Maplewood Richmond Heights, Jackson, Henry County, Portageville, Cape Central and Poplar Bluff.
-- Posted by drawmules on Mon, Jan 11, 2010, at 2:01 PM
Yeah, I wouldn't concern myself too much with Maplewood this year. Just sayin'.
-- Posted by zalmanian on Mon, Jan 11, 2010, at 2:25 PM
That is a pretty salty remainder of the season. Sikeston has Kennett, Henry County, Poplar Bluff, Portageville, Cape Central, NMCC, and Bernie left as matchups I would consider possibly tough.

I cannot resist making this comment. I always jump at the opportunity to promote a Scott County Central / Sikeston game. It is true Sikeston has to play these teams you listed. However, Charleston will also have to play Scott County Central and Notre Dame. Sikeston does not play Scott County Central. Therefore, I think Charleston has a tougher schedule the rest of the way.
-- Posted by drawmules on Mon, Jan 11, 2010, at 2:38 PM
I agree. I didn't say Sikeston's was tougher. I only mentioned the games that might be tough. Sikeston should play SCC every year, IMO.
-- Posted by yah-yah on Mon, Jan 11, 2010, at 2:46 PM
While we are talking about which teams play each other and do not play each other in the regular season, let's discuss Portageville and Bernie. Portageville and Bernie are arguably the best Class 2 teams in Southeast Missouri for the second consecutive season. Why do they not play each other in the regular season? I think I might know the answer to this question. But I'll allow other forum posters to comment first.
-- Posted by drawmules on Mon, Jan 11, 2010, at 2:59 PM
Class 1 District 1. North Pem plays Delta C-7 @ Delta tomorrow night. I wish I could forcast a Win but after coming off 2 straight losses, I think things are going down hill for the Mustangs.
Out of the Top 5 teams, I think any team could win against any other, on any given night.
-- Posted by RWILSON on Mon, Jan 11, 2010, at 3:56 PM
semoballfan1's thoughts on another forum thread have drawn my attention to Class 2 District 3 @ Oran. Bernie has made a strong case they should be seeded first in this district. Which team should be seeded second, however? I think the battle for the second seed has tightened in recent weeks. It is quite possible Oak Ridge, Oran and Advance will all receive votes for the second seed at the seed meeting. Which team would you seed second? I'll share my thoughts later.
-- Posted by drawmules on Mon, Jan 18, 2010, at 2:52 PM
drawmules,
Are you already ruling Oak Ridge out for the 2 seed?

Yes its true in class 3 district 1 that NMCC is really the only team with a true center, but will he be able to run with kennett? and if so will he be able to keep up the entire game? kennett plays very fast and is 9-10 men deep as we all no by now.. i just dont see him being able to play that style of game all 4 quaters. im interested in the charleston NMCC game now.

If I had to seed the teams today I would have to seed Oak Ridge second. However, it is going to be really close. At this point, the second seed in this district is TBD.

If your concern is can Kony Ealy run the floor against a fast Kennett team the answer is yes... and "no problem yes". You have obviously not seen him play. He is big, strong and quick as a cat. A total handful when he comes to play.
-- Posted by indian73 on Mon, Jan 18, 2010, at 8:03 PM
Indian73 u are exactly right! No problem yes is a great way to describe how he will play. The kid runs a high 4.5 forty time! He's not stopping and he won't get tired!

bulldogs, and indian73
thats what i was curious about.. i havent gotten to see NMCC play this year and was very curious.. i have just seen kennett play and they seem to be a good team this year.. as well as a team with a deep bench... Kony might not get tired, but what about the team as a whole? and whats your thoughts about charleston?
-- Posted by lilbigboy on Mon, Jan 18, 2010, at 9:20 PM
Well for new madrid the other players two are the running backs for their football team ones a wide receiver/ safety and the other is the quarterback that was injured for this football season. So that being said they are very athlectic and they are all faster than kony with g'darius Stevenson being able to run in the 4.2's! So they can be quick to. Charleston is also a very quick and athletic. They do lack in the height department but their quick and scrappy. They really have two main scorers but the rest of the team can score too. I also like their perimeter shooting their pretty impressive. And new Madrid beat charleston last Tuesday.

i appreciate your info.. i am pumped to see how this class of districts unfolds.. whats you thoughts on kennett?
-- Posted by lilbigboy on Mon, Jan 18, 2010, at 9:37 PM
Yes I agree I am very pumped too! This is a very exciting district and honestly my favorite because I think the district games will be the equivalent of state playoff games. So in other words great matchups. I think kennet is a great team this year. Going into this year I wasn't sure they would do that great considering some of the talent they lost like the parr kid and others. But they've really surprised me this year and I think they've surprised others too. I love their quickness their very fast but most of all as u mentioned I like their deep bench and how many players they can put in the scoring coloum each night. They should be a great contender in the exciting class 3 district!

How do you think with that ditrict being played in Kennett, do you think that gives any type of advantage? Not to many people have talked about that.
-- Posted by lilbigboy on Tue, Jan 19, 2010, at 10:08 AM
Don't jump the gun on your district rankings in class 3 having a cake walk to Columbia. Cardinal Ritter is awesome as well as Maplewood and Brentwood, all in the same district, which usually sees the bootheel winner in the quarters. I can't see any of those teams beating Cardinal Ritter, who yesterday beat 5-a powerhouse Mcluer North.
-- Posted by Kdub102002 on Tue, Jan 19, 2010, at 11:16 AM
You just cannot count out Caruthersville in Class 3 District 1.
Kennett defeated Caruthersville 81-77 in the Bootheel Conference Championship Friday.
After the game Daily Dunklin Democrat reporter, Aaron Lynn, asked the legendary David Heeb if he had anything to say about Kennett.
Heeb replied "We're gaining on them."
David Heeb will have his team ready at the end of the season. If I were a gambling man I would visit Lady Luck Casino in Caruthersville and put a few dollars on the Tigers.

drawmules,
We are approaching the ends of many seasons and I am sure the coaches are starting to think of districts. In class 1 district 3, how would you start preparing your team if you were a coach? SCC you would assume to make the finals with 2 or 3 teams hoping for the chance for an upset.
-- Posted by deervalley on Thu, Feb 11, 2010, at 11:58 AM
LOL
If I were a coach in Class 1 District 3 I would probably be trying to find a job at a school that is not in Class 1 District 3. Several good coaches with good teams have been unable to get past Scott County Central in the last 20 years.
-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 11, 2010, at 12:28 PM
Yes, but that is what makes it a wonderful game. And threw the years SCC has not always been the Goliath, sometimes they have been the David. If Ronnie Cookson was coaching Richland or Leopold, by districts he would have his team convinced they could win and a plan on how they would do it.
-- Posted by deervalley on Thu, Feb 11, 2010, at 12:35 PM
I agree deervalley. But . . . LOL
-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 11, 2010, at 1:55 PM
Notre Dame gets the top seed in that district. They look at head to head matchups. And because Notre Dame defeated Sikeston 66-61, Notre Dame will receive the top seed. It doesn't matter either way, one will play the winner of Dexter-Perryville and the other the winner of Ste. Gen-Fredricktown. So either Notre Dame or Sikeston might actually have to play their starters a whole 3 1/2 quarters against Dexter then just playing their starters 3 quarters against Fredricktown.
-- Posted by Bulldog_Pride on Thu, Feb 11, 2010, at 2:18 PM
I was told a story about Coach Cookson's earlier days and if a senior moment gets in the way, feel free to correct me.
SCC was making a run at a state title when they were David instead of Goliath. They ran into a team that had been number one most of the year and everyone thought them to be unbeatable. They had a dominating post player that was being recurited by Division 1 schools and possibly went on to play professionslly. I am not sure SCC even had a 6' player and the opposing post play was 6'8" or possibly even bigger. Coach Cookson had the smallest player on the floor jump center. Not that he was expecting to get the tip but to make the other team wonder. This player was also instructed to be on the post player no matter where he went and always less than an arms length. The post player had a bad habit that I am sure he later had to change but on this day each time he got the ball he put it on the floor at least once. You can imagine what happen. The smaller quicker player gave him fits all day and SCC went on to another state title.
I hope this does not appear twice. I had it typed and thought I sent it but it never appeared. I have no idea if this is true but it makes for a good story.
-- Posted by deervalley on Thu, Feb 11, 2010, at 2:51 PM
THAT PLAYER WAS JOE KLINE FROM SLATER AND YES MICHEAL GAVE HIM FITS,LOL EVEN WENT BETWEEN HIS LEGS TO STEAL THE BALL THAT IS A TRUE STORY GREAT GAME

The district tournament seedings for several tournaments will be released in the next few days.
Oran defeated Advance last night at Advance. I think this game will have a significant impact on the district tournament seedings in Class 2 District 3. Here is how I would seed the teams if I had a vote:
1. Bernie
2. Oak Ridge
3. Oran
4. Advance
5. Meadow Heights
6. Saxony Lutheran
7. Puxico
8. Chaffee
Another tough district to seed is Class 3 District 2 at Twin Rivers. Here is how I would seed the teams for this district:
1. Arcadia Valley
2. Bloomfield
3. Clearwater
4. Twin Rivers
5. Doniphan
6. Woodland
7. Greenville
SOME OF THE REAL SEEDINGS MAY COME OUT LATER TODAY OR TONIGHT. PLEASE POST THE SEEDINGS IF YOU HAVE THEM.

thats what i was curious about.. i havent gotten to see NMCC play this year and was very curious.. i have just seen kennett play and they seem to be a good team this year.. as well as a team with a deep bench... Kony might not get tired, but what about the team as a whole? and whats your thoughts about charleston?
Well for new madrid the other players two are the running backs for their football team ones a wide receiver/ safety and the other is the quarterback that was injured for this football season. So that being said they are very athlectic and they are all faster than kony with g'darius Stevenson being able to run in the 4.2's! So they can be quick to. Charleston is also a very quick and athletic. They do lack in the height department but their quick and scrappy. They really have two main scorers but the rest of the team can score too. I also like their perimeter shooting their pretty impressive. And new Madrid beat charleston last Tuesday.
bulldogs
i appreciate your info.. i am pumped to see how this class of districts unfolds.. whats you thoughts on kennett?
Yes I agree I am very pumped too! This is a very exciting district and honestly my favorite because I think the district games will be the equivalent of state playoff games. So in other words great matchups. I think kennet is a great team this year. Going into this year I wasn't sure they would do that great considering some of the talent they lost like the parr kid and others. But they've really surprised me this year and I think they've surprised others too. I love their quickness their very fast but most of all as u mentioned I like their deep bench and how many players they can put in the scoring coloum each night. They should be a great contender in the exciting class 3 district!
Bulldogs
How do you think with that ditrict being played in Kennett, do you think that gives any type of advantage? Not to many people have talked about that.
LOL
If I were a coach in Class 1 District 3 I would probably be trying to find a job at a school that is not in Class 1 District 3. Several good coaches with good teams have been unable to get past Scott County Central in the last 20 years.
Yes, but that is what makes it a wonderful game. And threw the years SCC has not always been the Goliath, sometimes they have been the David. If Ronnie Cookson was coaching Richland or Leopold, by districts he would have his team convinced they could win and a plan on how they would do it.
I agree deervalley. But . . . LOL
THAT PLAYER WAS JOE KLINE FROM SLATER AND YES MICHEAL GAVE HIM FITS,LOL EVEN WENT BETWEEN HIS LEGS TO STEAL THE BALL THAT IS A TRUE STORY GREAT GAME
It's a good thing you posted that message in all caps. I wouldn't have even noticed it if you didn't.
Who will win their district? Predictions?
Im looking at a Cape sweep with ND and Central
You might be right bball2010.
