Week of Feb. 1 Basketball Scores
Posted by drawmules on Sat, Jan 30, 2010, at 12:22 AM:

I plan on attending a basketball game every night this week.

I will attend the Notre Dame / Cape Central game Monday, the Risco / North Pemiscot game Tuesday, the championship game of the Stoddard County Tournament between Bernie and Dexter on Wednesday, the semifinals of the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament on Thursday, the Bernie / Notre Dame game Friday, and the Cape Central / Poplar Bluff game Saturday.

The game of the week this week is Poplar Bluff at Sikeston. Any thoughts on the Poplar Bluff / Sikeston game?

I hope to see scores posted as the week progresses. I would love to see scores from the Bootheel Conference Tournament and the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament.

I just heard that Bernie had an ineligible player that has played the last several games. Someone said he is in trouble for grades and is in trouble for Vandalism of the school. How will this affect the games they have already played and the rest of the season?

Crader do we get Cover it Live when Cape Central plays Notre Dame at the Show Me Center Monday? When Bernie plays at Notre Dame Friday?

Yes for Monday, drawmules.

This week I plan on adding a restaurant to the list of restaurants I have visited during sporting events this season. So far this season I have visited Kinsey's in New Madrid, The Freeze Queen in Libourn, The Sugar Shack in Campbell, Strawberry's in Holcomb, Park-Et Fine Foods in Perryville, and the China Buffet in Sikeston. Does anyone have a recommendation for Wardell, Missouri? I plan on eating in Wardell on Tuesday when I watch Risco play North Pemiscot. Where should I eat?

-- Posted by drawmules on Sun, Jan 31, 2010, at 9:12 PM

Theres only one set down place to eat a wardell during the first part of the week and thats the Mustang, but if your get thur there on thurs, fri, or sat u can eat the best catfish in the bootheel @ WILSON FISH HOUSE on the east end of town...

It sounds like I will be eating at the Mustang on Tuesday. What should I order? Feel free to join me at the Mustang around 5:15 p.m. basketball fans.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sun, Jan 31, 2010, at 10:07 PM

Drawmules, I surely hope you realize North Pemiscot doesnt actually play their high school games in Wardell. I've eaten sandwiches at the Mustang, bbq plates from the grocery store and a big@zz plate of pond raised cat at the fishhouse. However, to get to all these places, you would have passed by the gym by almost five miles. Ross Gymnasium was one of my favorite places to play on the road back in the day and its a stone's throw away from the I-55 overpass. Wardell, North Wardell and suburban Homestown is further west on down the road.

I'm at the North Pemiscot School anxiously awaiting the start of one of the biggest games of the season. Tonigh't game between North Pemiscot and Risco features arguably the best teams in Class 1 District 1.

Note: The JV game will only last two quarters. Therefore, the varsity game will start early.

The BBQ and baked beans at the Mustang were outstanding.

Opinion: I am glad to see the concession stand at the North Pemiscot School offers a variety of diet sodas. I had the option of drinking Pepsi One, Diet Coke, Diet Mountain Dew, or Diet Dr. Pepper. It is great to finally have a choice.

Enough about food and sodas. I'll provide scores updates for this classic beginning at 7 p.m. I would love to see updates from the Dexter / Richland game posted.

I wasn't able to go to the Richland game tonight, but I've been informed that it's a good. Last score I got was 48-45 Dexter.

-- Posted by hsbballfan on Tue, Feb 2, 2010, at 8:17 PM

Late in the 4th quarter, Dexter leads Richland by 10. Must be a rowdy game. I've been told several people have been removed from the building.

-- Posted by hsbballfan on Tue, Feb 2, 2010, at 8:26 PM

Cooter over Neelyville in a very physical game. Cooter has wins over district foes South Pem. and Neelyville with Holcomb on Thursday and Campbell on Friday. Seems like the Wildcats maybe starting to come around. If I remember correctly, last year they pushed last years state champion Portageville to the limit in district play before losing a close game.

Does anyone have scores from the Bootheel Conference Tournament at Senath? I'll be up until 2 a.m. working on assignments so if anyone hears scores for this tournament please post them later.

SCAA all tournament team:

Mac Thornton Richland

Seth Hill Bloomfield

Brandon Stoker Dexter

Jake Smith Bernie

Michael Lathum Richland

John Smith Puxico

Grant Gray Advance

Drew Thornton Richland

Skylar Blackler Bell City

Alan Flanigan Dexter

Garrett Rice Bloomfield

Jake Welch Bernie

-- Posted by badams2s on Wed, Feb 3, 2010, at 10:02 PM

Coming out of a timeout with 0:11 remaining Bernie drove the length of the floor and passed the ball inside to Jake Owens. . . Surrounded by Dexter defenders Owens hit a jumpshot at the buzzer to defeat Dexter 47-46. Jake Smith had 18 rebounds for Bernie. Jake Welch had 10 steals. This is the first time Bernie has won the Stoddard County Tournament since head coach, Brad Botsch was a senior at Bernie.

Bloomfield after trailing by double digits at halftime outscored Richland by approximately 20 points in the third quarter. Bloomfield defeated Richland 80-69.

Poor cell phone service prevented live updates.

-- Posted by drawmules on Wed, Feb 3, 2010, at 10:14 PM

Correction: It was announced on a local radio station Smith had 18 rebounds. However, offically he had 14 rebounds and 13 points.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 12:19 AM

How did Richland get outscored 31-8? I find it hard to believe that's all they put up in a quarter. I also can't believe Bloomfield scored that many in a quarter without Hensley.

I am altering my schedule for Thursday. I will attend the NMCC / Scott County Central game at New Madrid. After last night's tournament, I'm simply too exhausted to make the long drive to Chaffee for the 8:30 p.m. conference semifinal game between Oak Ridge and Meadow Heights.

The JV contest between NMCC and Scott County Central is headed to overtime tied at 63.

NMCC JV defeats Scott County Central JV 75-71 in overtime.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 7:26 PM

Observation: Hatchett started the varsity contest between ScottCounty Central and NMCC. Last week there were reports he might not play in this game due to an injury. He is on the floor and very effective in the first quarter.

Scott County Central leads NMCC 18-0 with 4:00 remaining in the first quarter.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 7:59 PM

NMCC has responded with an 14-0 run of their own 18-14 SCC. 0:55 left in first.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 8:04 PM

At the end of the first quarter SCC leads NMCC 21-18.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 8:07 PM

"An 18-0 run and then an 18-3 run," says a Scott County Central fan.

I would have to say that is a very accurate assessment of the first quarter.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 8:10 PM

NMCC has taken the lead 24-23 with 6:00 remaining in the second quarter. I have to admit I thought the game was over when Scott County Central jumped out to an 18-0 lead. Never give up. But don't count on always being able to overcome an 18 point deficit in six minutes every night.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 8:18 PM

At halftime Scott County Central leads NMCC 40-38.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 8:25 PM

49-49 with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter as the student section for NMCC begins the chant "Let's Get Fired Up."

I agree. I wish the atmosphere was . . . well I guess LOUDER.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 8:45 PM

At the end of the third quarter NMCC leads Scott County Central 57-54.

If NMCC wins this game will it finally be enough to move them into the state rankings. In my opinion, they should have been in the Top 10 weeks ago. LOL I hope responses to this question are posted on the state ranking thread instead of this thread.

5:12 remaining SCC leads 60-58.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 9:07 PM

0:36 remaining. Porter fouls out. 70-66 SCC.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 9:10 PM

0:14 71-69 SCC sCC at the free throw line.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 9:13 PM

SCC converted the free throws. Got a steal. Converted two more free throw. Got another steal. Final score Scott County Central 75 NMCC 69.

-- Posted by oak ridge fan on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 11:10 PM

Good job to da NMCC Eagles tonite. No one expected yall to play like yall did. I just wish we would have came out the gates playin hard and maybe the outcome would have been different. Now i promised that i would give new rankings after this game so here they are:

1. Poplar Bluff

2. Sikeston

3. NMCC

4. SCC

5. Notre Dame

I will probably give new rankings again after Sikeston/Bluff and Sikeston/SCC. Im curious to see wat you think draw.

-- Posted by eagle agent 00 on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 11:12 PM

How can you rank NMCC above SCC when SCC just beat them at New Madrid 3 hours ago. I would rank them:

1. SCC

2. Sikeston

3. Poplar Bluff

4. Notre Dame

5. NMCC

I know that Notre Dame has beaten SCC and Sikeston, but losses to Cape Central and Bluff Drop them. NMCC has split with ND, lost to Bluff, and were blown out by Sikeston. Whoever wins the SCC/Sikeston game should be #1. I think its a toss up without Stewart Johnson, before Christmas I don't think Sikeston could have touched them. SCC might lose a close one next Wednesday, but I think they will run the table after that and repeat in Class 1.

-- Posted by badams2s on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 11:35 PM

congrats to Justin Stotts, a junior on Zalma's basketball team for hitting his 1000th point about 20 minutes into Zalma/Leopold game tonight at Chaffee MVC tourney. Gooooo Bulldogs!!!!

-- Posted by BBfan1 on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 11:50 PM

LOL eagle agent 00

Notre Dame is better now. I watched them play at the beginning of the year and I've watch them play twice and the last 10 days and trust me they are better now.

As I watched tonight's game, I kept asking myself who will win the NMCC / Kennett game. I'm not convinced the team that wins the regular season game will win the district championship game. I think NMCC and Kennett are close enough to each other that the extra motivation the team that loses the first game will have in the second game could be the difference in the second game if there is a second game.

-- Posted by drawmules on Thu, Feb 4, 2010, at 11:54 PM

Not sure I agree with ranking NMCC over SCC either, considering SCC just beat them.

I'll be looking forward to some updates from Notre Dame tomorrow night.

Anybody else excited for districts yet?

-- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 12:08 AM

Let me say this regarding the rankings . . . Some years it easy to rank the teams . . . this is not one of those years . . . it's too balanced this year to rank the teams without making someone upset. I try to rank the teams accurately. I look at a several factors including strength of schedule, overall record, SEMO conference record, and play in the last month. Poplar Bluff had high marks in most of these categories when I released my Feb. 1 rankings. However . . . I think Sikeston and Poplar Bluff have an equal chance of winning on Friday. The rubric I used to rank the teams says Poplar Bluff is a better team. However, I have a gut feeling Sikeston will beat Poplar Bluff.

Sigmund Freud might argue I have subconsciously developed this gut feeling because I have watched Sikeston play more basketball games than any team this year with the exception of Bernie. There might be something to Freud's argument. I am unsure if Freud enjoyed basketball, however. Therefore, I am unsure if we can use his psychoanalytic theory to explain why I have a gut feeling Sikeston will beat Poplar Bluff.

What does everyone else think LOL???

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 12:16 AM

SCC isn't better than Sikeston with or without Stewart. To say Sikeston wouldn't have touched SCC with Stewart is way off-base, IMO.

-- Posted by yah-yah on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 7:52 AM

The only reason I have NMCC ranked over SCC is because no one expected NMCC to hang in there with the #1 team in class one. Everyone expected a blowout(even me after the beginning of that game). NMCC fought all four qtrs and never gave up when they were down. I feel that if NMCC came out the gates playing to their full potential, they very well could have one the game. If this game were to be replayed anytime before the season was over, I believe NMCC could/would win. SCC is a very good team, but I have seen better SCC teams than this years. Idk wat it is about them this year, but they will make a run @ repeating state champions and probably will succeed.

-- Posted by eagle agent 00 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:07 AM

Crader,

could you delete the post under the Oak Ridge/Meadow Heights article. I don't think that we should be talking about the beat down of high school players.

-- Posted by gmctough on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:25 AM

"The only reason I have NMCC ranked over SCC is because no one expected NMCC to hang in there with the #1 team in class one." --- eagle agent 00

That's a unique perspective on ranking teams eagle agent, unlike any I've seen.

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:28 AM

Here are rankings on how teams are now:

TIED #1 - Sikeston/ Notre Dame: Probally the two teams that are playing the best right now. Sikeston is on fire while ND has won 9 straight including a win over Scott Central and they beat Cape by 15 (who they lost to earlier)

#3 Poplar Bluff - Playing really well. PB at sikeston should be a great game.

#4 Scott Central - Losing S. Johnson really hurts them. Still should be the best team in class 1

#5 NMCC - Lost to SCC in a close one. Getting a lot better.

-- Posted by bean84 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:46 AM

Your rankings are the best I've seen for an area top 5, bean. Unless Sikeston or ND lose a game heading into districts, that tie won't be broken until the District Championship game.

-- Posted by yah-yah on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:54 AM

no way ND is at #1 yes they did beat Sikeston and SCC but they lost to cape and bluff beat them also you can't put them at #1 just based on the 2 big wins you have to consider who they lost to also number 1 team will be the winner of tonights game between Sikeston and PB

-- Posted by BIGELW on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 12:20 PM

If there are any cancellations please post. I'm headed out the door with a suitcase just incase I have to stay at a motel after the Notre Dame / Bernie game due to deteoriating road conditions. I will check for cancellations later this afternoon on my phone.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 12:30 PM

BIGELW, you kind of make me hope Sikeston wins tonight. It seems that unless somebody posts something favorable toward Bluff, your response is always pretty negative.

-- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 1:44 PM

Actually, you should be rooting for SHS anyway Farmboy if you want ND to have its best shot at winning the conference. PB is undefeated in conference play.

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 1:50 PM

Eh, I figure a team ought to win on it's own terms, not have to hope somebody beats somebody else at the last minute. If ND had beat NMCC at home, their 'fate' would be in their own hands. I just hope everybody gets the good game we're expecting this evening.

Anybody know who the last team to go undefeated in SEMO Conference play was? Could've been last year for all I know, it just seems like there is always at least one upset throughout the season. Running the table in the SEMO Conference is no easy task.

-- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 1:54 PM

ND's fate is in their own hands. All they have to do is win out and they are guaranteed a tie. If Sikeston wins out, they are guaranteed a tie with ND or Bluff. If Bluff wins out, they are outright champs.

It definitely has not happened much. Maybe Jackson a few years back with Jake Leet and Goodman? Brutal league. Tough to win on the road in the SEMO Conference.

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 2:20 PM

I don't know how u think this is negative just saying u have to rank on what a team does as a whole wins and losses.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 2:36 PM

I hope to see live updates posted on this thread for the Sikeston / Poplar Bluff game, the Mississippi Valley Conference Championship and the Bootheel Conference Championship.

If the weather is not too bad I may drive to Chaffee to watch the second half of the Mississppi Valley Conference Championship. I've done the math and I think I could get to Chaffee by 9:15 p.m.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 3:43 PM

Just seems you get awfully defensive about rankings, considering they aren't official by any means. Even the official ones aren't anything more than just for fun. I would say that if PB wins tonight then it's tough to argue that they aren't #1 in SEMO. It's a shame they don't play SCC, we could really get a good idea of who's who. Good luck to the Mules tonight and the rest of the season.

Drawmules-

why I have a gut feeling Sikeston will beat Poplar Bluff.

Previous matchups don't always mean much. I'm expecting a very close game, with Sikeston having the edge playing on their home court.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 4:24 PM

Well said! I think everyone can agree that both teams are playing extremely well right now so this game should be very exciting. I think honestly both teams have a legit shot a winning. I hope the game is close and it turns out to be a great one!!

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 4:26 PM

I'm going with Sikeston by 18. Sikeston always plays well at home and seem to be playing their best basketball right now. While I haven't seen Poplar Bluff play this calendar year, their guards really looked shaky when I saw them earlier this season. Tonight is going to be a good opportunity to see if they have gotten better and changed that. My gut tells me two things....Sikeston won't be able to hold Raulston to under 20 points....but their guards are going to be able to create over 20 turnovers.

-- Posted by Crash Davis on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 4:40 PM

Oh okay..what happen in december stays in december...we havent lost in january..i hope you guys are at the game later..when i get back on here tonight..dont just look at the computer thinking of something to say..congratulate us..it will be a great game..

-- Posted by respectthegame on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 4:44 PM

Well then you don't be making excuses if Sikeston happens to lose...because you sound like the type to do it.

-- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 4:46 PM

One thing that concerns me about Sikeston is they have had a long layoff, again. They haven't played in 10 days and they also lost a player during that stretch. It will be interesting to see how they handle it.

Sikeston with four turnovers in the first 2 minutes. Bluff with only one.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 7:30 PM

Sikeston with 5 turnovers. Down 12-0

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 7:33 PM

Sikeston trails 15-2. Sikeston has more turnovers and more missed free throws than points.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 7:35 PM

Bluff is having zero trouble with Sikeston's press. Sikeston has missed 4 point blank shots, but they did manage a little run. At the end of the first, Bluff leads 17-12.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 7:41 PM

Holifield is 2-2 from beyond 3. Score now 21-16 Bluff.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 7:43 PM

Make that 3-3, now 21-19.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 7:44 PM

Sikeston is switching things up a bit and at times is going to more of a 3/4 court trap. They are beginning to force some Bluff turnovers.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 7:46 PM

The trap has worked well. Once down 13, Sikeston has forced some turnovers and has now taken the lead 24-23.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 7:48 PM

Halftime: Sikeston and Bluff tied at 31.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 7:56 PM

At the end of the first quarter Notre Dame leads Bernie 15-8. Bernie was 0-5 on 3's in the first quarter.

Observation: The Dawg Pound if full of students that are barking like crazy tonight.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 7:56 PM

During the half of the Sikeston game, the 7th, 8th and 9th grade teams were introduced. As a group, they went 39-1. Including JV and Varsity, Sikeston's basketball teams - across all grades - are 71-2 for the season. The announcer went on to reveal that the current 8th grade team has never lost. 20-0 over 2 seasons.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:03 PM

Sikeston begins the half with a turnover and Greg Coble scores. Raulston has been fairly quiet and Coble is leading the way for Bluff with 12 points so far. While I'm typing, Coble adds another extend Bluff's lead to 4.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:08 PM

Coble scores AGAIN. I think he has 18 for the game. Bluff leads by six.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:09 PM

Coble scores AGAIN. He is simply moving back and forth across the free throw line. His teammates are finding him inside the zone and he's hitting the jumpers. I believe he now has 20 on the night. Score is 39-34 Bluff.

Thanks football monkey, please keep the updates coming.

-- Posted by Hello on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:12 PM

Janiel Hatchett with a Julius Ervingesque scoop from behind the backboard. Sikeston takes the lead 40-39.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:16 PM

Sikeston gets another turnover on a ten second violation. Hatchett scores again. Dogs by 3.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:17 PM

Sikeston forces another turnover off the trap. That might be about 5 in a row. Bluff calls timeout down 3.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:18 PM

Hatchett scores again on an acrobatic play but Bluff answers with a 3. Dogs up by 2.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:19 PM

Holifield scores a 2 and Sikeston gets ANOTHER steal. Dogs with the ball up by 4. Hatchett hits a 3. Dogs by 7.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:20 PM

Timeout on the floor. Credit coach Holifield with changing up the defense. It has worked so far like a charm.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:21 PM

Sikeston with another steal and Jamison is fouled on the drive. Makes them both. Dogs by 9.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:23 PM

Raulston at the line for Bluff with 22 seconds left in the 3rd. He misses the front end. Sikeston scores on an in-bounds play and leads by 11 at the end of the 3rd. At one point in the 3rd, Sikeston was down 6. The trapping defense has made all the difference.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:25 PM

Holifield for 2. Dogs by 13.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:26 PM

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:28 PM

After a free throw by Coble, and a lay-up by Howard, the dogs lead by 12. Raulston makes a 2 at the other end, but Howard gets a 2 on a goal tending call. Dogs still lead by 12.

Final score: Sikeston 73 - Bluff 54.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:43 PM

At the end of the third quarter Notre Dame leads Bernie 53-30.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:46 PM

I guess you could say that the Dogs' went on a 71-39 run to end the game. They were down 15-2 right?

I would say that they are the real deal.

I just hate it that these kids are that good and work so hard only to have to face a private school later down the road that in years past has ended their season. IMO, it just isnt fair. Borgia is the number one team in the state, and they have ended Sikestons season twice in the last four years. I think that Sikeston has a chance to win that game this year.

-- Posted by Hello on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 8:55 PM

Notre Dame defeats Bernie 72-47.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:04 PM

I saw Borgia play last year Vs. Sikeston, and they seemed to live and die by the 3, they didn't seem as talented as Sikeston though, they just stalled the ball alot, and shot 3's. They had 7 3's in the 1st quarter alone. They were very sharp from the freethrow line as well. Sikeston fought back and made it a 2 point ball game sometime in the 4th quarter, but Borgia stalled again, and was able to pull out the win(by about 10 if memory serves me right), I think this year could be a different turn out.

-- Posted by semolian on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:08 PM

I hope you're right, semolian. We have a tough test in districts first, though. ND is playing very well.

-- Posted by yah-yah on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:10 PM

Dexter 69

advance 60

-- Posted by semolian on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:17 PM

Ahem. Sikeston will have to beat Note Dame before they make it to Borgia. And if it wasnt for private schools, there would be no competition for the public schools so GET OVER IT!!!

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:18 PM

Great game huh..i think we done a great job of coming back against a great team..if the game was in Bluff it probablay wouldve went a little different..im glad we got the win..

-- Posted by respectthegame on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:19 PM

I already mentioned ND, bball2010...chill.

-- Posted by yah-yah on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:19 PM

Farmboy???? Did you attend the game?

-- Posted by respectthegame on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:20 PM

Thank you btw. But im tired of the hating on private schools who apparently recruit. But last time i checked public schools recruit it is very well known, just thought that should be brought to light.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:21 PM

bball2010..that comment about the private schools was hilarious..there are alot of good public school out there with good sports programs..the only difference between the two is that Yall get to recruit players..so actually yall should be better...lol

-- Posted by respectthegame on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:24 PM

Wow, bball2010, someone gets a little testy when a team not named ND gets a little credit. And nobody on the board brought up anything about recruiting until you did right now. We just want to talk about the most impressive looking team tonight from the best game, Sikeston. Stop starting drama on here.

-- Posted by s-town4292 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:27 PM

The last three winners in Class 4 have been private schools. And name me some recruited private school players i am thrilled to hear who you think has been recruited. Its jealousy is all it is.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:27 PM

I'll give sikeston all the credit in the world for beating a very good poplar bluff team, because they fought back from a pretty big deficit, and that takes a lot of heart.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:29 PM

This will be my last comment of the evening i dont want to enrage anymore sikeston fans.

When It comes to the district championship this year i think we are going to be in for a real GREAT, AMAZING, AWESOME, game because these are two teams who are on bigger rolls heading into districts than two i have ever seen, both teams play excellent defense, and both can score pretty good. So all i have to say is wait to be entertained because you will be.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:37 PM

The seating capacity of Dexter's new gym will definitely get tested on February 26th.

-- Posted by yah-yah on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:38 PM

I also say that it is unfair for public and private schools to play in playoffs...basketball and football. If public schools had their own playoffs, who knows how many championships sikeston, new madrid, and other semo teams would have!!

-- Posted by eagle agent 00 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:39 PM

I think it depends on what you call "recruited". I don't think coaches or administrators from the private schools go out actively looking for kids. Maybe they do, but I don't think so. At least I've never seen it or even heard any strong evidence to suggest it. But I do know the following scenario happens: Parents of kids from different towns who know each other, and friends who know each other and grew up playing youth ball with each other, get together and have a conversation that goes like this: "Hey, my kid and so and so's kid are going to X private school. Just think if your son and Joe Blow's son went to the same school, think of what a good team we could have." I know these conversations take place because I have been involved in them. The end result is kids being enticed (notice I didn't say recruited) to attend a private school together - for the sole purpose of being on very talented sports teams. A public school only has that option if the family actually moves to the school district. Now, that may or may not be "recruiting", but it is without question an avenue that private schools take advantage of. It's not cheating, but it undoubtedly leads to an advantage. I don't blame them for doing it, but I do blame MSHSAA for not dividing the private and public schools. In my opinion, owing to the above, the private schools hold a definite advantage.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:40 PM

But that would remove a lot of competition in this area, who wants to see blowouts through the playoffs especially in Class 4 basketball where private schools are always very prevalent.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:40 PM

Sikeston held Raulston to 6 points and Eljie Johnson to zero points.

-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:41 PM

MSHSAA tried and it failed miserably, and the state ended up even blocking the measure, so all i have to say is dream on.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:42 PM

bball2010,

I appreciate your last comment, and I've thought the same thing. It would definitely water down the competition for both public and private schools. But, coming from a public perspective, it is tough to know that you are playing against kids who, if everyone had to play by the same rules, would be playing for your team and not the opponent. It's very hard to watch that game winning shot, touchdown pass or base hit executed by a young athlete who lives down the street from you, grew up playing youth ball with you, but decided to drive 40 miles so he could play with other ringers from the region. It is almost like all-star teams playing rec-league. The private schools get to dance with everyone at the party, while the public schools have to dance with whoever brought them.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:48 PM

You have got to be kidding me semohoops. Raulston only had 6 on the night? Wow, that may be the most shut down I have ever seen him. Bluff seemed real winded in the second half. I don't think they've played a team with Sikeston's speed in awhile.

-- Posted by s-town4292 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:48 PM

I can always dream! One final comment (maybe!), occasionally, I have conversations with private school folks who agree that they have a competitive advantage. For me, that's all I want. It is difficult for me to keep a straight face when private school folks try to argue they don't have an advantage...or even worse when they claim a disadvantage due to the state mandated enrollment multiplier. I just don't know what to say to that. I was born in the night, but it wasn't last night.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:53 PM

I understand your perspective on this but, you cannot punish young athletes for choosing to go to private schools, it would be wrong. I also do not see MSHSAA changing this anytime soon because they have to many private school cards in the deck. Heck, the St. Louis area is dominated by the private schools, so people in this area should be happy that the level of competition between private and public seems to be very even, and when these teams play they are always very fun to watch.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:54 PM

i agree there is an advantage due to the wide range of players who can play for these teams, but the same thing happens in public school too, its just not as well publicized.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:55 PM

I don't see MSHSAA changing it either, but I don't agree that dividing them up would be any form of "punishment". We already divide the classes because there is an obvious advantage for a school with an enrollment substantially larger than another. Sometimes, you will hear a class 1 team argue that they are better than a class 4 team and "wish" that they could have played them. I think the "wishing you could have played" is not perceived as punishment.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 9:59 PM

The problem with MSHSAA's first try at a separation, the big problem was that it would not allow for public and private to play even during the regular season, which would force teams to travel to St. Louis for games weekly, which would be a horrendous schedule for high school students who also have school to deal with believe it or not, its not all athletics.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:03 PM

I'm not going to say that there aren't cases where public school kids slip across the border and live with grandma and play for another school. It would be very naive of me to say it and insulting to you. But, I don't believe it happens anywhere near the extent to the situation I've outlined above with the private schools. Can't prove it, but that's my distinct impression.

By the way, I know some folks HATE these public vs private discussions, but I think they're fascinating and I enjoy the debate. And notice, nobody is being mean-spirited or calling names. Just an open, calm debate. Just what forums are for. Bravo! Though I have to apologize that this is occuring on a score thread. Sorry to hijack it. I promise I'll try to stop now.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:04 PM

Personally, I'd have no problem with regular season games - just not the state tournaments.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:05 PM

Me too I'm stopping and thank you for being respectful, I understand both sides of the argument, heck maybe it will change sometime soon but who knows what MSHSAA is cookin up.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:08 PM

Where are the starting infield for the #1 ranked ND Bulldog baseball team all from? Is it true that all 4 players grew up and live in Sikeston

or have moved to the cape area just to play at ND?

I'm not telling but asking. I have heard this and want to know the truth about it. Seems Sikeston would be a little better this year if kids were allowed to attend Sikeston no matter where they live.

LOL

The basketball scores thread looks like it is entertaining. I'm at Advance slowly making my way south. The road conditions at Advance are better than the road conditions at Dutchtown.

I hope by the time I am home someone has posted a score for the Kennett / Caruthersville game.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:22 PM

Football monkey: I might be mistaken, but I thought anyone could go to any public school, even one not in their district, as long as they pay tuition. Is that true? Would they be an eligible athlete if they did?

-- Posted by irishgirl on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:28 PM

Juniorbulldog,

Four of Notre Dame's senior, baseball starters live and grew up in Sikeston. However, 3 of the 4 have attended Catholic schools since kindergarten. Only one is a non-catholic, transfer who started attending Notre Dame as a freshman after leaving Sikeston's public schools.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:31 PM

And the ones that just graduated?

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:34 PM

Kennett won 81-77

-- Posted by mandm96 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:34 PM

Irishgirl,

I don't know the rules inside/out, but in general, I think you're right. A student can attend a school outside of their district if they pay tuition, but there are guidelines in place regarding athletics. For example, (and again, don't take this as gospel, I could be wrong) it is my understanding that a student who lives in Sikeson's school district could pay to go to school at Charleston. However, he or she would be ineligible for sports competition for one year. There are exceptions and several other details to that rule, but that is the basic understanding I have. It is all laid out on MSHSAA's website, but it is very long and very complicated. I've read it a dozen times and still don't fully understand it. I know Sikeston had 2 kids transfer in over the past 2 years who would have been tremendous assets to the sports teams, but both transferred during their senior years and neither were eligible to compete under MSHSAA guidelines. At least that is what I was told.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:37 PM

Juniorbulldog,

I don't believe there were any baseball players from Sikeston in Notre Dame's graduating class from last season. In fact, I'm almost certain of it.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:39 PM

I thought the Young kid was born and raised in Sikeston and went to public school there as well. Just what I thought and thanks for the info Monkey.

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:41 PM

He is a senior this year.

bball2010..u need some help..thats what the announcer says at the games..YOUR SIKESTON BULLDOGS!!! ..u really dont need to be on these threads if u cant handle it..everyone is going to cheer for their own team and they need to respect others..thats something you are not doing..stop being childish..

-- Posted by respectthegame on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:44 PM

How about that reverse layup from Janiel Hatchett in the second half. As good as I have seen all year.

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:46 PM

Yes. Janiel is the new "Dr. J."

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:47 PM

CONTD'..and as far as i am concerned..im proud of every southeast missouri team on those overall state records..usually KC and STL own those rankings but we are making some noise..if ND was the only team on there i would cheer for them..im cheering for every bootheel team in the playoffs and state playoffs..its not that serious for u to bash us like that..u are annoying

-- Posted by respectthegame on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:48 PM

I was impressed with Sikeston's ability to adjust tonight. They solved Raulston, and when it was obvious the full-court pressure wasn't working, they switched defenses. They still applied relentless pressure, just with a different look, and it paid off in a big way. I was also very pleased to see Sikeston work a respectable half-court offense. If they are going to beat the Notre Dames and Borgias of the world, they will have to be able to execute in the half court. Still need to work on the free throws, though. Ugh!

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:50 PM

Anybody have any updates on the ticket sales at the Show Me center for the game on Wed. The announcer at Sikeston said the game is almost sold out. Not sure I believe that but it could be.

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:51 PM

Wow I didn't mean to get you all worked up, i am proud of the teams from this area but don't be screaming about my bias when yours is clearly showing.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:55 PM

AND, Sikeston is one less player deep. With the departure of Nuquavious Dixon, Sikeston's rotation consists of: Wiggins, Holifield, Hatchett, Jackson, Howard, Porter and Jamison. The sophomore, Jamison, stepped up big tonight with 12 points and he was solid with the ball and from the line. Look for him to be a big part of this team down the stretch and for the next 2 seasons. With Dixon gone, Martez Evans may be called on for more minutes.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:56 PM

We have said it all year about the free thows. Guess it is just not going to change and yes I believe it will bite us at some point. To many misses from point blank range as well but I guess being off for two weeks can do that to you. I could really tell that Sikeston had to work up to game speed through out the first half. Second half was back to normal but I hate these layoffs we seem to have to endure.

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 10:56 PM

What happened to Dixon just wondering. Hatchett seems to have really stepped up for them though.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:00 PM

does anyone have the PB-SIK box score and stats

-- Posted by respectthegame on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:01 PM

dont worry about it..they are not your bulldogs..keep it moving

-- Posted by respectthegame on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:02 PM

Nuquavious Dixon quit the team. Don't know why. Janiel Hatchett has been an extremely pleasant surprise. He is exactly what Sikeston needed - a scorer who can light up the three and take his man to the hoop one on one and score. He will be a nightmare for opposing coaches to scheme against, and he's getting better every game.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:03 PM

Is he a soph or jr?

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:05 PM

I'm pretty sure Janiel is a junior.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:06 PM

Hatchett seems to be the leading scorer for them now, he really earned his playing time.

PS: respectthegame the team does not bother me, I can give credit where due fans just bug me somettimes.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:08 PM

Hatchett is the reason, Dixon didn't want to come off the bench. He hurt his groin and missed 6 games. When he came back he had lost his starting job and Janiel wasn't going to give it up. I think IF we win district and get another shot at Borgia, he will wish he had stayed. If Sikeston was to beat Borgia and get to Columbia, Dixon is going to wish he was there for the rest of his life. Sad

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:12 PM

I don't understand that role players are some of the biggest parts of high school basketball. It's what defines a team.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:15 PM

The only players graduating off this team are Wiggins and Eli Jackson. Strong stars but almost all of this team will be back next year with several JV kids that haven't lost a game this year. I see Sikeston being very strong for the next several years.

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:16 PM

They have a very good shot at title next year(this year too) because nd will lose their strong senior leadership and Borgia has a lot of seniors too

Thanks football monkey. Your live updates were amazing.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:20 PM

My pleasure, drawmules. I was bored and it was fun.

Sikeston-Poplar Bluff TeamTracker report: http://semoball.com/story/1608892.html

Also, welcome to our newest TeamTracker Charlie Doublin. He will be tracking the Meadow Heights boys for us. Look for some other new additions in the coming days.

Thanks to football monkey for the updates tonight. Impressive detail, especially since I'm assuming here that an iPhone or Blackberry was used to provide them.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader (Moderator) on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:26 PM

Nope. I was at home sitting in front of the tv with my laptop. I don't have that type of texting skill.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:29 PM

Plus I don't have a blackberry or iphone.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:30 PM

Oh...haha. That explains SO much. I was starting to think you were super-human. I forgot about that newfangled television technology. :)

-- Posted by Rachel Crader (Moderator) on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:32 PM

Can't get reception at the fieldhouse anyway

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:32 PM

Some say I am super-human. Just not super-techno-human.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:34 PM

Rachel every home game for Sikeston is broadcast on SPS-TV. A local station hear in town. All cameras and graphics are handled by the students in the production class. They have been doing it for a lot of years. Not the greatest but very easy to watch all the same. The home football games are done as well.

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:35 PM

I love SPS TV for basketball, but don't like it as much for football. When the weather gets bad late in the football season, the temptation to stay home and watch the game on TV is too great. Even with Sikeston's recent amazing football season, it wasn't until the last 3 home games that the stands were actually full. Many folks just didn't want to brave the elements when they could watch it from the comfort of home.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:39 PM

bball2010

You can get reception on the fifth row. If you lay your phone down flat you get better reception.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:40 PM

How did I know you would know that, drawmules?

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:41 PM

Monkey I agree. I wish they would broadcast the home football games on a tape delay. Just wait 30 minutes after the game ends. Most people would rather get out then wait till 9:30 to start watching the game. I know it has to be live but it does kill some of the fan support.

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:42 PM

Pahaha that's great. Yea there are certain parts of the building the bleachers on the west side seem to have better reception.

-- Posted by semo2014 on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:44 PM

Doesn't have to be live. The playoff games could not be shown live due to MSHSAA rules. They were shown on a 24 hour tape delay on SPS TV. Probably why attendance was great for the playoffs...that and the fact that it was the PLAYOFFS.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:45 PM

bball2010

The cell phone service at the bottom is much better the cell phone service at the top of the bleachers.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:46 PM

drawmules, which gym in the area has the worst phone service? What about best concession stands? Best fans? Best overall venue to see a game? I'm not being funny, I'd really like to know.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:48 PM

But that is the only reason they were not live, MSHSAA rules. Otherwise they would have been and that is a shame. The Tailgate party alone was worth going to the Ladue game. College like atmoshphere.

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:48 PM

I know I might catch some grief for this, but a few years ago the private schools were dominating the smaller districts, and to make it on a leveler playing field, MSHSAA decided to bump private schools by multiplying the student body by 1.5. It seemed to work, as Notre Dame was placed from a 2A district into a 4A district. Yes, they have still won district crowns since then, including a state title, but at least its competitive. Could you really see any 2A team around here competeing with them? The other fact is the bigger the school and everyone assumes you have more talent, that is not always the case, though it does give your more to chose from. For example SCC has alot of talent, for being a 1A school, and with that talent they beat a 5A school for the SEMO Christmas Tournament title, by 20 points.

-- Posted by semolian on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:50 PM

By the way, drawmules, you should write a book chronicling your season-long basketball adventure. You could include all kinds of interesting stuff about life in rural America seen from the perspective of a high school basketball gym.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:50 PM

Drawmules, I think monkey is on to something there!

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:52 PM

I have some paperwork I have to get caught up on tomorrow. However, I do plan on attending the Cape Central / Poplar Bluff game Saturday night unless the Leopold / Oak Ridge game is played on Saturday.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:55 PM

Semolian,

I think for basketball, your point is a good one. You only need to find 7 or 8 good players to field a good basketball team. With football, you need so many good players the size of the student body becomes a much bigger factor. It's a lot easier for a class 1 school to find a handful of good bball players than it is for a class 1 school to find 30 good football players. When a class 4 has 1,000 students, finding those 30 players becomes substantially easier.

-- Posted by football monkey on Fri, Feb 5, 2010, at 11:55 PM

good point football monkey, I wasn't thinking about football. It's a shame that some schools don't even have enough to field a football team, where as others it seems could start their own combine training camps.

-- Posted by semolian on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 12:10 AM

football monkey

Thanks for the suggestion. Writing the book would be easy. The problem would be getting the book published. I am unsure how many people would be interested in buying a copy of the book.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 12:13 AM

So Cape-PB is tomorrow? PB may be dragging in that game.

-- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 2:10 AM

Is this a new forum record @ 230?

-- Posted by eagle agent 00 on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 2:49 AM

drawmules, if you write it... we will buy and read it. I think football monkey had a GREAT idea. The suggestion of including all kinds of interesting stuff about life in rural America seen from the perspective of a high school basketball gym sounds like a great read to me. Hoosiers is one of our favorite movies, I'm willing to bet a book about hometown southeast Missouri high basketball wrtten by you could be on of our favorite books.

-- Posted by farminmarsh on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 3:50 AM

Someone asked about ticket sales for the Sikeston vs SCC. I talked to Shannon at the SMC about 2:30pm yesterday and he said that they had sold a little over 2,600. Plenty of tickets left!

-- Posted by mandm96 on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 9:15 AM

mandm96, thanks for the info on the tickets. We were told at the sikeston game that the place was starting to sell out. I found that hard to believe. I think there will end of being a good crowd but not like last year.

-- Posted by JuniorBulldog on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 10:01 AM

Just a couple of more scores that I haven't seen on here yet: Delta 62, Kelly 37 & Oran 66, Bell City 60

-- Posted by Larry Doby on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 10:13 AM

Richland also defeated Risco by 5.

Any chance the Oak Ridge / Leopold game will be played on Saturday night?

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 10:42 AM

According to the NWS, a major snow storm could impact our area next week. If they don't get the game in tonight it could be a long time before the championship game of this tournament is played.

http://www.weather.com/weather/alerts/lo...

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 10:43 AM

I'm sure they'll get it played tonight. Doesn't look like there's a chance of any precipitation according to KFVS.

-- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 10:48 AM

Notre Dame actually used to be a Class 3 school, because ND v. Scott City was a huge rivalry in the district, almost as good as ND v. Sikeston

-- Posted by semo2014 on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 10:59 AM

FarmBoy06

I haven't heard there are plans to play the game tonight. I would definitely think playing the game tonight would be more appropriate than playing the game Wednesday (the night of the Scott Count Central / Sikeston game).

However, if I had to give a prediction, I would predict this game will not be played Saturday night. I hope I am wrong.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 11:03 AM

bball2010

And before that Notre Dame was a Class 2 school. I can remember when Notre Dame and Bernie were in the same district. Paul Hale was still coaching at Bernie. Notre Dame traveled to Bernie and lost by 1 point in the regular season game. The two teams met again in the district championship at Bloomfield. Notre Dame hit a shot with less than 5 seconds remaining to win the game by 1 point to advance to the state playoffs.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 11:08 AM

I'm in Poplar Bluff anxiously awaiting the start of the Cape Central / Poplar Bluff game. It is Homecoming tonight!!! This brings up an interesting question. How did Homecoming originate in the United States? Homecoming and basketball have absolutely nothing in common, in my opinion. I would love to share my thoughts about all of the Homecomings I have observed in the last 20 years with the creative mind that was in charge of the first Homecoming in the United States.

It will be interesting to see how Poplar Bluff recovers after last night's loss to Sikeston. I'll go with Poplar Bluff by 10. But you never really know which team will show up for a big game on Saturday, especially a Homecoming game.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 6:46 PM

While I remain unsure how Homecomings and basketball games are related, I have to admit one of the posters in the Poplar Bluff gymnasium is really groovy.

The poster is entitled Mule-Golian Grill Take-Out Menu.

Items on the menu include:

Cape Chow Mein, Tiger Chop Suey, Tiger Foo Yong, Tiger Ragoon, Dun Dun Tiger, Egg Roars, and General Frazier's Tiger.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 7:05 PM

The large crowd at the Poplar Bluff gymnasium is not going crazy yet. After four minutes of play only four points are on the scoreboard. Poplar Bluff leads Cape Central 4-0.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 7:42 PM

At the end of the first quarter Poplar Bluff leads Cape Central 9-5.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 7:46 PM

5:28 remaining in the second quarter Poplar Bluff leads Cape Central 9-8.

Three Rivers leads State Fair 27-20 at halftime.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 7:53 PM

What do you think of a game when the fouls are 16-2 in the first half alone?

-- Posted by Blam it on the Ref on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:06 PM

Cape Central was hotter than a infrared burner the las four minutes of the first half. At halftime Cape Central leads Poplar Bluff 21-17.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:06 PM

Blame it on the ref

I didn't notice the difference in fouls. It didn't appear the coaches were upset with the way the game was called in the first half.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:10 PM

3:00 remaining in third. Cape Central and Poplar Bluff are tied at 27.

#44 for Cape Central, the center, just picked up his fourth foul.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:28 PM

At the end of the third Cape Central leads Poplar Bluff 31-29.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:32 PM

6:53 remaining 33-33

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:35 PM

#11 for Poplar Bluff just picked up his fourth foul.

4:32 remaining Cape Central leads 37-35.

Drawmules No. 1 ranked team is in danger of being upset tonight. It is so unlucky to be No. 1.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:42 PM

Sounds like they are about to scrap in PB!

-- Posted by mandm96 on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:42 PM

After last night, PB is going to have to dig down deep. They have got to be tired.

-- Posted by citizen cyborg on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:44 PM

The way they talked on the radio was that there was a pile up on the floor and Eljie wasn't happy with something that was going on in the bottom of that pile.

-- Posted by mandm96 on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:44 PM

You're right citizen! They have to be completely gassed!

-- Posted by mandm96 on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:45 PM

0:33 Cape Central leads 46-42

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:52 PM

Raulston for three 46-45 0:26.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:52 PM

0:17 Cape Central 48-45.

Poplar Bluff ball at halfcourt. Timeout.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:55 PM

Cape Central defeats Poplar Bluff 50-45.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 8:57 PM

Thanks for the scores drawmules. Tough couple of days for PB. I think they will regroup and return to better form. Notre Dame will probably be in for a game next week.

-- Posted by citizen cyborg on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 9:05 PM

Cape Central now has wins against drawmules No. 1 ranked Poplar Bluff Mules and No. 2 ranked Notre Dame Bulldogs. Correct me if I am wrong Crader . . . I also believe Cape Central has wins against every team in their district.

I think they deserve a one seed in their district.

Does this mean we get to have a pizza party?

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 9:11 PM

Cape beats PB and ND. Makes next Fridays game a little more interesting.

-- Posted by Fatboy1972 on Sat, Feb 6, 2010, at 9:27 PM

Cape Central will have to be Jackson on Tuesday before they worry about Sikeston. But . . . Cape Central has done enough for the top seed in districts.

I know I'm not suppose to have favorite players, like Fred Garmon, and favorite teams, like North Pemiscot, but I have to admit I have favorites. I think I'll add Cape Central to my list of favorites. I really like watching this team. They are always full of surprises and I love surprises.

You may be right about cape getting the #1 seed in districts but i don't think it will really matter cape played a good game and we played awful. we were 18 for 58 from the floor and 2 for like 15 for three i think the sikeston game really took it out of us friday night.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Mon, Feb 8, 2010, at 4:24 PM

I'd still give PB the top spot in their district. I would have to take into consideration the fact that PB just played Sikeston Friday night before playing Cape Saturday afternoon.

-- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Mon, Feb 8, 2010, at 4:41 PM

FarmBoy06

I agree the game Friday night is a factor. Nevertheless, Cape Central beat every team in their district. They have earned a one seed. The difference between a one seed and a two seed is significant in this district. The two seed gets Jackson in the semifinals. The one seed will get a weaker opponent from the St. Louis area.

-- Posted by drawmules on Mon, Feb 8, 2010, at 4:56 PM

cape will have to beat jackson tonight to get the 1 seed.
