This is a really big game. Why? I'll tell you why.
In my opinion, Bernie and Hayti have a decent chance to meet again in the state quarterfinals Portageville, Advance, Oak Ridge, Campbell and Thayer might argue otherwise. However, if I had to bet which Class 2 teams would meet in this game, tonight, I would put my chips on Bernie and Hayti.
Hayti is scheduled to travel to Bernie on Tuesday Feb. 9.
Any thoughts on this game?
Hayti fans . . . This a great time to create a semoball account. Creating a semoball account is easier than driving to Bernie in the snow.
drawmules you maybe correct, but!!! Portageville plays a better schedule than most of the other 2A's. Bernie is gradually upgrading their schedule which will help them prepare. As most everyone will agree, Coach Jim Bidwell will have his players ready. The Bulldgos are having for them "a down year" but I just can't go against their tough man-to-man defense and their relentless slashing to the basket. There is no doubt that the talent is out their to knock off the defending state champions and Bernie,(3 or 4 from Dist. 1, Oak Ridge and others from Dist. 3). But, I/ll take Bernie from District 3 and Portageville from District 1 in the quaterfinal.
One thing that hurts a lot of these teams, when it comes to district/state is their styles of play. A lot of the conferences have local officals that call it very tight(some teams will score 20-30 points a night from the line), then when you get to districts, then officials (which most of the time are not locals) have a tendency to allow a more physical style which helps the teams that are accustomed to playing bigger/stronger teams. Doesn't sound like much, but over the years it seems to hold true.

Who do you think will win the Bernie / Hayti game Tuesday?
Don't forget Portageville's district is at Hayti. You just cannot count out Hayti. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a team like Campbell upset Hayti in the semifinals. One of the most balanced districts in the state will be played at Hayti this season.

I think Bernie will win. Although Notre Dame thumped them pretty good, Notre Dame has thumped several teams this season.
I know Hayti has some good athletes, but Portageville has beaten Campbell, Hayti(twice)the 2 point win at Hayti,South Pemiscot, Senath-Hornersville.. They have a quality win with Caruthersville who is probably going to mount a late charge in Class 3. The other teams (Neelyville, Holcomb, and Cooter) on a given night could cause some trouble. Portageville's last 4 games (Sikeston, Gideon, Charleston, and New Madrid) they will probably lose 3 of those, and Gideon will certainly get after them. There is no substitute for that kind of preparation. I'd rather be 1-3 going in against tough teams as to be 4-0 against teams that are not going to challange my team on every possession.

Mac, you make very good points, and underestimating P'ville or Coach Bidewell is always a mistake.
However, I think drawmules heard something today that is influencing his choice. Sometimes we hear things as truth that wind up differently. Sometimes we hear the truth. Time will tell.

I've felt like Hayti is a dangerous team the entire season. It is hard to hear anything when you are at a motel 75 miles away from Portageville. It sounds like your heard something troll.
And troll . . . Sometimes we never hear the entire truth from anyone.

The game is tomorrow if the weather is clear.

I don't think the game should be played on Wednesday. Some people have to go to church. They already had to miss church last Wednesday because of the Stoddard County Tournament. Two Wednesdays in a row is a bad idea.

Maybe this will help with your take on Portageville. They lost seven seniors from last years state champ team, and play with NO seniors on this years team. Juniors and soph.s carry the load. Coach Bidewell was asked last year, "are you ready to come back next year for a 6th championship?', to which he replied, "It depends on how bad the boys want it!" This years team needs to MATURE. There are several who think TEAM is a one man show. Lots of raw talent, lots of promise, but short in maturity. We'll see soon.

When is the Portageville/Sikeston game going to be rescheduled? Portageville is pretty open next week aren't they? Sikeston plays on Tuesday and Friday next week. They still have an opening from when the Kelly game was snowed out.

I am shocked the Bernie / Hayti game has been postponed. I just got off the phone with a commuter in the Kennett area. He informed me the major highways are clear. Road conditions after the Bernie / Notre Dame game were much worse than the current road conditions. Were BOTH schools opposed to playing this game tonight? Why? The argument that you don't play basketball when you don't have school has several fallacies.

I'm assuming the decision had to be made rather quickly. No one wanted to play this game tomorrow, but the season is beginning to wind down and this was an open date.

It doesn't put Bernie in a good position for the Advance game. We saw what happen to Poplar Bluff when they were forced to play Cape Central in a makeup game the night after they played Sikeston.

What a game. The mules came to play D, and finally the shots go down. This is the beginning of a special district run for Bernie.
