Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 12, 2010, at 11:11 PM:

I am issuing a special edition of my monthly rankings in the middle of February. Upset city has triggered the special release.

Here is how I would rank the teams after watching 68 varsity teams play 108 varsity games.

3. NMCC (5)

4. Cape Central (10)

5. Sikeston (3)

6. Poplar Bluff (1)

7. Arcadia Valley (7)

8. Kennett (6)

9. Bernie (8)

10. Charleston (9)

11. Dexter (11)

12. Clearwater (14)

13. Jackson (12)

14. Richland (13)

15. Leopold (17)

16. Caruthersville (NR)

21. Advance (19)

22. Campbell (21)

23. Doniphan (24)

24. Van Buren (25)

25. North Pemiscot (22)

Note: Feb. 1 rankings are listed in ().

Final Analysis:

Team advancing the most spots from Feb. 1 rankings: Caruthersville (10 spots)

HOW WOULD YOU RANK THE TEAMS?

Replies

i cant put cape ahead of sikeston yes they did beat them tonite but sikeston didnt have a starter tonite and will h. would have scored more than 7 points tonite so i believe it was a good win but a lucky one due to the injured starter not playing in this game.

kmasters

I took injuries into consideration. We don't know when Sikeston will be 100 percent. Until Sikeston is 100 percent I have them down a few spots in the rankings.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 12, 2010, at 11:32 PM

The rankings do not reflect what I think will happen in next week's games.

If Sikeston is 100 percent I like Sikeston over NMCC.

I also think Kennett has a chance to beat Poplar Bluff on Monday. I think Kennett's speed and quickness will present serious problems for Poplar Bluff.

-- Posted by drawmules on Fri, Feb 12, 2010, at 11:35 PM

I think the best way to make a top 25 list is to wait till the season is over. With Sikeston losing to Cape and ND losing to PB tonight and with this team losing to this team then beating that team that beat this team. Well, now I'm confused. I think this season will be one that we talk about for a long time. You've got 7, 8 or maybe even 9 teams that have a shot at being number 1 and no real dominate team this year and other than maybe Otto Porter no real dominate player.

-- Posted by Fatboy1972 on Fri, Feb 12, 2010, at 11:52 PM

You're right fatboy! This has been a crazy year! At least as far as the Semo Conf. is concerned.

-- Posted by mandm96 on Fri, Feb 12, 2010, at 11:59 PM

I would love to see fans and students from smaller schools particpate in the discussions.

Call your friends in Bloomfield, Twin Rivers, Campbell, Doniphan, Caruthersville, Van Buren, Clearwater, Advance, Portageville, North Pemiscot and Richland. Tell them to create a semoball account so they can debate the rankings.

drawmules

What debate? this year, it's more like a crapshoot!

-- Posted by sawdust49 on Sat, Feb 13, 2010, at 6:36 AM

sorry, Crapshoot defined: a game of chance using dice, also known as "anything goes". Your Top 25 is pretty fair, but for debate; why does Hayti drop out. I thought they still had a chance to Win Class 2 district 1 ?

-- Posted by sawdust49 on Sat, Feb 13, 2010, at 6:46 AM

sawdust49

Hayti still has a chance. But they lost to Bernie by nearly 40 points on Wednesday. They have also struggled to defeat teams that are not in drawmules Top 25. The winner of the Hayti district is no longer a lock for the state quarterfinals. Don't count out Thayer in Class 2 District 2.

Rankings look good to me draw.

I was discussing Charleston with some friends last night....and as stupid as this statement sounds, Charleston is a pretty darn good 11-loss team. They may play the toughest schedule in their class, if not the toughest in SEMO.

Their 11 losses are to: Notre Dame x3, SCC x2, NMCC, Sikeston, Whitfield, Mounds-Meridian (IL), Jackson, Memphis Central. The only bad losses of all those are Mounds and Jackson. I think their district will be a tough one, but I think Charleston has as good a chance as anyone of advancing. They looked pretty good last night against Portageville (even considering the fact that P'ville is without 2 starters). I'm fairly confident Charleston can handle the District 2 winner (sorry, I don't buy the toughness of that district's competition), but it looks like they may run into Cardinal Ritter in the quarters. Charleston plays at home today against Maplewood-Richmond Heights...should be interesting.

FarmBoy66

Your right...Charleston looked pretty tough last night at Portageville. they played very tough, got in some head game, and shot the lights out.and I couldn't believe how deep their bench was. They could foul out ten players and never slow down. If they want it bad enough, they could take a district crown.

-- Posted by sawdust49 on Sat, Feb 13, 2010, at 6:15 PM

I will disagree. I would be shocked to see Charleston win this district. Charleston will likely have to upset Kennett AND NMCC to win this district. I don't think it will happen.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sat, Feb 13, 2010, at 6:36 PM

It just depends on how they shoot. They live by the 3.

-- Posted by mandm96 on Sat, Feb 13, 2010, at 10:46 PM

draw, that's what most folks (including myself) said last year, and they started playing their best ball right about now and gave eventual state champion MRH a good game. They seem to be playing very well right now.

-- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Sat, Feb 13, 2010, at 10:51 PM

You can do your top 25 right now or you can wait until the end of the year. When ever you do it the Scott County Central Braves will still be #1 in the SEMO area!

-- Posted by DA#1OLDCAT on Sun, Feb 14, 2010, at 12:20 AM

DA#1OLDCAT

If Notre Dame wins the state title in Class 4 they will finish No. 1 in my final poll. Anything can happen.

FarmBoy06

If Charleston wins their district I'll buy you lunch at the Freeze Queen, the Sugar Shack or the Mustang. Your choice.

-- Posted by drawmules on Sun, Feb 14, 2010, at 12:36 AM

How about Strawberry's? :)

-- Posted by FarmBoy06 on Sun, Feb 14, 2010, at 12:31 PM

I think ANY class 4 team that wins state from SEMO this year should be #1 in the final SEMO rankings. They'll have to go through Borgia again to get there. I'm sure Sikeston is hungry for a rematch, but ND wants the chance to show they can take care of business that Sikeston couldn't last year.

-- Posted by semolian on Sun, Feb 14, 2010, at 2:19 PM

Ok FarmBoy06

-- Posted by drawmules on Sun, Feb 14, 2010, at 2:34 PM

There's not a team in the semo area that could win a 7 game series aganist SCC!!! That's why I think they are & will continue to be the #1 team in our area. "At least for this season"

-- Posted by DA#1OLDCAT on Sun, Feb 14, 2010, at 6:36 PM

Just wondering how Kennett got bumped down 2 spots when they didn't lose a game in the time frame from the last top 25. Not saying they should move up, but didn't think they should have moved down, either.

-- Posted by DW in KenMO on Sun, Feb 14, 2010, at 7:53 PM

DW in KenMo

I think the argument you present regarding Kennett is logical. I asked myself the same question before I dropped Kennett two spots in the rankings.

Here is my response:

The two teams I moved ahead of Kennett, Cape Central and Arcadia Valley, continue to perform extremely well. Cape Central has a win against Notre Dame, Sikeston and Poplar Bluff. Kennett has a 20+ point loss to Sikeston. Arcadia Valley was undefeated when I released the rankings. I am unsure how Arcadia Valley performed in its conference tournament on Saturday. I cannot continue to ignore Arcadia Valley's accomplishments. Therefore, I felt like Arcadia Valley should be moved ahead of Kennett.

Kennett vs Poplar Bluff:

The rankings do not reflect what I think will happen in Monday's game.

Kennett has a chance to beat Poplar Bluff on Monday. I think Kennett's speed and quickness will present serious problems for Poplar Bluff. Poplar Bluff turned the ball over multiple times against Cape Central. I think Kennett's defense has the potential to force turnovers.

drawmules

I hate to see Kennett drop in your rankings but watching their last two games they aren't playing their best right now. Your favorite player has had a couple of rough games, early foul trouble against Caruthersville and very few points against Dexter. A win Monday night against PB would really be a boost for Kennett with Charleston and NMCC coming up .

-- Posted by Indian81 on Sun, Feb 14, 2010, at 8:49 PM

Drawmules

Arcadia Valley won their tournament over north county 60-43, saturday. Not as close as the last time they played. AV won by 3 the last time.

-- Posted by semolian on Sun, Feb 14, 2010, at 10:41 PM

kennett will need to force turnovers cause they will no way be able to handle our inside game

-- Posted by BIGELW on Mon, Feb 15, 2010, at 1:37 PM

It looks like Kennett kept it pretty close until the very end when PB pulled away for an eleven point win, BIGELW.

-- Posted by yah-yah on Tue, Feb 16, 2010, at 8:15 AM

Yea the first half we just ran up and down with them which is unlike us and we turned it over quite abit the second half we slowed it down and got the ball inside. They played a real good game and i think they out rebounded us and beat us to every loose ball they played like they wanted it more than we did

-- Posted by BIGELW on Tue, Feb 16, 2010, at 8:48 AM

I hope you all can find your 'A' game before districts. I think you all have the best chance of making some noise in the Class 5 playoffs. You need Coble, Johnson, and Raulston to play their tails off from here on out.

-- Posted by yah-yah on Tue, Feb 16, 2010, at 9:05 AM

we have 4 guys that average double figures with Raulston, Johnson, Coble and White we just need to step up the D and take care of the ball better and we should be fine. Just hope we are peaking at the right time

-- Posted by BIGELW on Tue, Feb 16, 2010, at 9:29 AM

NMCC vs. Sikeston tonight! Should be a great game. If im correct, if NMCC wins, they win the conference championship but if not, they share it with Sikeston and ND. Let's go Eagles!!!

-- Posted by eagle agent 00 on Tue, Feb 16, 2010, at 9:39 AM

if nmcc gets beat and pb beats charleston friday than it would be a 4 way tie

-- Posted by BIGELW on Tue, Feb 16, 2010, at 10:19 AM

I hope Sikeston plays a little more inspired than they did on Friday night. They're shooting was dismal at best in every aspect of the game. With Will not in the lineup, they really don't need to be shooting 20+ 3-pointers. Hopefully, they'll use their strength of penetration tonight.

-- Posted by yah-yah on Tue, Feb 16, 2010, at 10:23 AM

I don't know what they shot from 3 pt. land but they only shot 8 of 25 from the free throw line. They looked tired and confused Friday night, hopefully they'll make adjustments before disricts start.

-- Posted by Fatboy1972 on Tue, Feb 16, 2010, at 10:47 AM

I'm glad they get to play at home the last two games to try and get some momentum back and start playing better.

-- Posted by yah-yah on Tue, Feb 16, 2010, at 10:55 AM

yah-yah

Sikeston performs well at home. But can they win a big game on the road when it really counts?

-- Posted by drawmules on Tue, Feb 16, 2010, at 11:12 AM

Who knows, drawmules. ND showed they were vulnerable on Friday night against PB, as well.

-- Posted by yah-yah on Tue, Feb 16, 2010, at 11:19 AM

How does tonight change your rankings Draw with Sikeston beating NMCC and Cape falling to Charleston?

-- Posted by mandm96 on Tue, Feb 16, 2010, at 9:54 PM

mandm96

I'm not surprised by the result of the Sikeston / NMCC game. A future legendary coach once said "It's all about the matchups."

I think this is very true when there is a great deal of pairity in the league or in this case the Semo Conference. I think there is evidence to support this claim. Poplar Bluff has 2 wins against Notre Dame. Sikeston has 2 wins against NMCC. NMCC has a win against Notre Dame. Notre Dame has a win against Sikeston. Cape Central probably supports this claim the best. But I'm too tired to try to describe their wins and losses.

I do not have an explanation for the Cape Central / Charleston game. I know I probably have Cape Central ranked too high. But how can you not rank Central high when they have wins against Notre Dame, Sikeston and Poplar Bluff? I really enjoy watching Cape Central. They get the most out of their talent at Cape Central. They have proven they can beat anyone in Southeast Missouri.

Final thought: I ENJOY WATCHING ALL OF THE TEAMS IN SOUTHEAST MISSOURI. I AM VERY THANKFUL I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WATCH SO MANY LARGE SCHOOLS AND SMALL SCHOOLS PLAY THIS SEASON.
