So that us Sikeston fans, the scourge of Semoball, can stop bothering the rest of the community with our bothersome facts, I figured it was time to just start a Sikeston-Gateway thread. I'm sure you have all heard about the speed of their QB/Trey Lewis-esque player Paul Rice. If you haven't seen him, there is a YouTube video that Cully Bryant posted on the Week 1 Predictions thread. They also have a very talented WR named Kalen Perry and another potential playmaker in RB Michael Ball. However, from information received, their line play could be a hindrance for them, especially on the defensive side. PHL is not known for having great lines so that would be following tradition. One thing about Gateway and their fans is that they think they should be going to the Dome this year. Coach Gibbs noted as much in today's Standard Democrat. In fact, on other websites, Gateway fans were making predictions from 28-14 GT to 35-21 GT to even scores like 36-10 GT.
We all know that Sikeston is going to have to play better than they did in the jamboree last week if they want to win this game. However, it has been noted that they have had a lot better practices this week, and the offense has been clicking although the QB has not been named. I think the key to this matchup will be the ability to disrupt the Gateway QB. He is the focal point of the offense and almost always tries to get plays outside of the hashes. If Sikeston's defense can put themselves at a level similar to the last couple of seasons, then their speed and ability to swarm to the ball could keep Rice and the offense in check. Meanwhile, the option and misdirection are going to have be clicking. We are young on the offensive line. Thus, they are going to have be ready to get moving from the time the ball is snapped. In the end, I think this game is going to be a bit of a shootout but I think that the Sikeston offense is going to do too much against an average defense from the PHL so I predict a 41-28 win. What are other people's thoughts?
sideline i think sikeston wil win 27-21. i postd earlier on how to stop the rice guy. just get back a step or too and then get down in to the stance and go nab him. i think siketons misdirection will fool even the smarter of coaches in the area from what i just have seen.

I do like the fact that in recent years Sikeston has used week one to beef up the schedule. I wish I knew more about Gateway but I don't. Simple fact of the matter is that it's hard to pull out a win in SPS Stadium. Going with the Dogs, 28-14.
-- Posted by I.P. Freely on Thu, Aug 25, 2011, at 12:33 PM
Lookout sideline, good ole I.P. Freely is watching. Don't be playing those "IF" games. Anyway, Sikeston wins a thriller 34-31.

I will relay what I have thought n years past against almost every opponent.
If Sikeston can keep early mistakes down, sustain a few drives, and play some solid defense, and play within themselves, they have a chance.
Good long snaps, make extra points...build some momentum
Speed on defense, get to the ball fast, contain, and hit somebody. Wrap up, stop the hugging and arm tackling that I saw so much of in Hillsboro.
And do it all at full speed.....when opponents wake up Sat am....they need to knwo they played Sikeston...because they are sore from head to toe..
If I was playing anyone, even if I lost, I'd want them to know it wasnt because they didnt get hammered by our defense.
-- Posted by Headhunt on Thu, Aug 25, 2011, at 1:38 PM
Sikeston 35-21, two crucial stops in the second half of play, where coaching and discipline come into play. Their qb is impressive, but sikeston being blessed with two stellar qbs in the past 2 years will help us, we have two solid DE's who should be in the backfield a lot, and if he does make it to the open field we should have the speed to catch up with him, from what I've seen he has pretty good vision, but our defense should be ready. We just have to get our offense rolling right off the bat
-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Thu, Aug 25, 2011, at 3:27 PM
I agree with headhunt. Keep the mistakes to a minimum. Take care of the little things on offense and defense. And play fast and swarm to the ball on defense and we should be fine.
-- Posted by Swoop on Thu, Aug 25, 2011, at 7:36 PM
Sikeston fans don't worry if you lose week 1 you will get back on the winning track next week with 60-0 blowout.
-- Posted by semofred on Thu, Aug 25, 2011, at 8:57 PM
Would have to say as long as Sikeston takes care of the ball and contains the outside on defense... It will be hard to not come out of Fridays game with a "W"
Sikeston 28- Gateway 21 (or less after they look at that HUGE bulldog)

Tony "Duke" Evers, was a ficticious character, and "Apollo Creeds" manager in the "Rocky" series movies.
I say this as a reminder to never take anyone lightly when it comes to High School Football.
When speaking of Rocky Balboa after an unexpected series of near knockout punches seriously shook Creed in the early rounds Duke Evers says...
" He don't know it's a damX show, he thinks it's a damX fight"
I'd say that would about cover it.

Not a great night of play from the young Bulldogs. It is sad because Sikeston fumbled into the endzone on a score that should have made the game 21-7. They had a fumble they should have recovered that would have prevented a Gateway score. James Watson gets hurt and the defense is young. It sounds like "excuses" but it is just the facts of the game. Young team, season opener. That is the way it is sometimes. Bad night for the Bulldogs. Now that I have given my analysis, I'll be taking my 24 hour sabbatical to digest the game and get ready for Charleston. Not happy with my Bulldogs play tonight but we'll get over it considering it is only the opener for a young team.

Heard this afternoon the QB job is now down 2. Harper is out, Foster in! Foster is still good enough to beat Charleston.

Wow! Coaching staff, Coach G I have lost respect for you and your program. I used to marvel at your leadership, guidance, and preparation. Glad my boys play for someone they can trust and believe in. Way to go, you better win big! DH gave you the best chance to win and distribute the football into all your athletes hands! He will play division 1 baseball! Too bad he was not afforded the opportunity to lead as Blake Dewitt did. If kids are forced to choose one sport, Coach G, you'll lose the athletes to basketball. Bet? The bureaucy has been upheld. Does Coach J coach like he umpires? Wow, defensive coordinator, reference the Warrenton game? Wow, just disappointed! Sorry for the ranting.
-- Posted by coachinhoops on Mon, Aug 29, 2011, at 7:45 PM
Coach-
How can you say that? You obviously don't know the whole story. And he would never make an athlete just pick one sport. The best thing for a sport, is to play another. The more sports the better, trust me.
-- Posted by sherlockholmes on Mon, Aug 29, 2011, at 8:02 PM
Seriously? Coach Gibbs is probably the fairest coach and
Person I know, and coach Jackson started him over his own step son, drew is a great baseball player and a good qb who had the tools to be big, and losing players to basketball? More basketball players keep coming out to the team each year. Taking cheap shots at the coaches is ridiculous and I can honestly bet you wouldn't admit to who you are or say it to his face. I'm done talking about everything, and I'm going to support the team and the coaches win or lose, and whoever the qb is
-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Mon, Aug 29, 2011, at 8:09 PM
You guys make some valid points, just very disappointed! If the senior is not better than the junior....... Look at what level of play the junior could give you for two full seasons!! See my point? Coach, I am sure, already realizes what he has lost. He has to develop a new quarterback for at least next year. Why not build one now? Especially if this years senior is not head over heels above the rest. The coach can still win, but against anyone his size or a larger school? This remains to be seen. My experiences are 20 plus years in coaching. Two former players who have played in the NFL, one currently still playing. My guess is coach realizes he will regret what happened today. As an educator he should treat the young man no different and be supportive as he shines in baseball! Most coaches would not do these things. I hope coach continues to be a professional after this.
-- Posted by coachinhoops on Mon, Aug 29, 2011, at 9:58 PM
So how would you feel if another coach called you out on an Internet forumn hiding behind a screen name?
The junior didn't play head over heels about the senior, whoever EARNS the spot gets it, idk how hard that is to realize
-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Mon, Aug 29, 2011, at 10:09 PM
And who are you? I thought you would have coached basketball with that name. And if you can say all of this you should man up to it, coach gibbs wouldn't do something like this because he's a CLASS ACT
-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Mon, Aug 29, 2011, at 10:17 PM
Best of luck to you playing in the game Friday night!
-- Posted by coachinhoops on Mon, Aug 29, 2011, at 10:19 PM
I don't play, haven't since eighth grade, but coach Gibbs did coach me in wrestling for two years, a huge influence in my life and someone who every athlete to count on, he has brought sikeston together with the success of the football team.
And thanks for saying your name, I'm a 17 year old kid who mans up to everything i say.
I'm glad we don't have coaches like you!
-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Mon, Aug 29, 2011, at 10:23 PM
"So how would you feel if another coach called you out on an Internet forumn hiding behind a screen name?"
What H.S. coach did this? That's crap that a H.S. coach would do this!
-- Posted by mmorse on Mon, Aug 29, 2011, at 10:54 PM
Kent Gibbs is a class act. I suggest the name calling and beating down of him cease.
Saying you are glad your kids play for someone they can trust and believe in? My kid DID play for him, Ask him how he feels about Coach Gibbs.
I can speak for him, RESPECT RESPECT RESPECT !
No one "forced" anyone to choose a single sport.
One loss doesn't make anyone lose respect for an entire program. If it does, well, I am sure you feel Obama is the answer....you're wrong on both points. I dont know where you are getting your info....but Gibbs wants athletes to play for the good of the team.....period.

I've been reading this jibberish for a few days now and have to say whoever "coachinhoops" is, is full of BALONEY! I'd bet any amount of money you don't have 2 players that played in the NFL and one that is playing now because there are only one or two coaches around here that could even say that. So go ahead and admit that your just a jealous parent or relative and do everybody a favor and stop bad mouthing people behind the computer screen. Nuff said.
-- Posted by Hemingway on Tue, Aug 30, 2011, at 8:45 AM
I can assure you that he is not a the father or a relative. I can also assure you that Coach Gibbs did not say Drew could only play one sport. I can also assure you that all this crap is doing more harm than good for the kids and the team.
-- Posted by Harp98 on Tue, Aug 30, 2011, at 8:59 AM
Sikeston will be fine, it was just ONE loss. It's not like they lost to an inferior opponent, GT was a great team with an outstanding quarterback. Sikeston is young, they can only get better from here on out. Gibbs is a good coach or he wouldn't have went 26-2 the past two season's. Your everyday average coach couldn't do that. Just end all this mess about the QB, why sikeston loss crap. They will have more wins than losses that I can assure you! Talk about kicking a team when their down! Gosh!
-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Tue, Aug 30, 2011, at 10:51 AM
Yeah, Sikeston will be fine. Foster will be doing the QB duties and we just have to put our support behind him. That was the best team that Sikeston will play this season other than potentially Farmington. Plus, they do always struggle in the first game of the season. See Obion County for example from last year. All these new starters are getting used to playing a full game at varsity speed. In the long run, the team will be fine. All the fans of opposing teams who are trying to purport this whole "The sky is falling" attitude about the team can back off. We just have to focus on beating Charleston this week. Do it again the next week against Dexter and so on. Sikeston will be fine, especially once James is able to play a full game. This team will develop into another good one. People just want to jump on the negative train while they have a chance.

Coach-
How can you say that? You obviously don't know the whole story. And he would never make an athlete just pick one sport. The best thing for a sport, is to play another. The more sports the better, trust me.
I'm done talking about everything, and I'm going to support the team and the coaches win or lose, and whoever the qb is
You guys make some valid points, just very disappointed!
So how would you feel if another coach called you out on an Internet forumn hiding behind a screen name?
The junior didn't play head over heels about the senior, whoever EARNS the spot gets it, idk how hard that is to realize
And who are you? I thought you would have coached basketball with that name. And if you can say all of this you should man up to it, coach gibbs wouldn't do something like this because he's a CLASS ACT
Best of luck to you playing in the game Friday night!
"So how would you feel if another coach called you out on an Internet forumn hiding behind a screen name?"
What H.S. coach did this? That's crap that a H.S. coach would do this!
Say it with me.............Ru-dy...Ru-dy...Ru-dy!
Sounds more like a ticked off father than a coach. . .hmmmm???
I've been reading this jibberish for a few days now and have to say whoever "coachinhoops" is, is full of BALONEY! I'd bet any amount of money you don't have 2 players that played in the NFL and one that is playing now because there are only one or two coaches around here that could even say that. So go ahead and admit that your just a jealous parent or relative and do everybody a favor and stop bad mouthing people behind the computer screen. Nuff said.
I can assure you that he is not a the father or a relative. I can also assure you that Coach Gibbs did not say Drew could only play one sport. I can also assure you that all this crap is doing more harm than good for the kids and the team.
Gosh!
If Sikeston doesn't want Gibbs, I'm sure Jackson will take him back! Don't be surpised if that doesn't happen.
I think we heard that last year to! If Sikeston would have wanted him to go they wouldn't have changed the way they have done things for years to keep him!
Gibbs isn't going to Jackson. Sorry to burst your bubble.
