October 21, 2011 TIGERS 52 East Prairie 7
A beautiful, clear but cool night in Caruthersville as the Tigers played host to the Eagles from East Prairie at Hopke Field on "Senior Night".
The Tigers wearing their red/red uniforms kicked off the the Eagles who wore all white uniforms. The Eagles' first play from scrimmage resulted in a loss of 2. However on 2nd down Eagle running back Frankie Nave broke through the line and had clear sailing into the endzone...that is until Tiger Elbie Fonda hawked Nave down at the Tiger14. The Eagles would lose two yards on 3 plays, thanks to a TFL by Tiger Phil Lancaster, and on 4th down Tiger Jamal Johnson picked off Shawn King's pass in the endzone for a touchback.
The Tigers would only need 4 plays to cover the 80 yards to the endzone. Elbie Fonda carried for 21 on the 1st play. Fonda was tackled for a 2 yard loss on the 2nd play. Tyler Grissom carried for 11 to midfield, and from there Fonda took it to the house. The PAT failed, but the Tigers lead 6-0.
The Eagles 2nd possession resulted in a punt after 3 running plays. The Tigers would take over on their own 44 yardline.
Fonda time again. This time from 56 yards out. The 2point run failed. Tigers 12 East Prairie 0.
The Eagles mustered one first down on their next drive, turning the ball over on downs at the Eagles 35.
Fonda carried for 24, and then an 11 yard TD run. Steve Rodgers added the PAT giving the Tigers a 19-0 lead.
Not a bad 1st quarter for Fonda: 6 carries, 160 yards, 3 TDs!!!
The Eagles' Adrian Soto almost returned the kickoff all the way, finally being tackled by Rodgers at the Tigers23. The Eagle offense would then lose 8 yards on 4 plays, again turning the ball over on downs at the Tiger31.
Grissom threw a 2 yard pass to Fonda. Then on 2nd and 8 from the Tigers33, Tiger Darrell Monroe got his 1st carry of the night...a 67 yard TD run. Rodgers PAT put the score at 26-0.
The Eagles were again unable to gain a 1st down and punted to the Tigers43.
On the 1st play, Tiger Tyler Cobb raced around the end all the way to the endzone...but a late Tiger block in the back penalty would give the ball to the Tigers at the Eagles13. Monroe got his 2nd carry of the night...a 13 yard TD run. The PAT failed. Tigers 32 East Prairie 0
The Eagles would gain 2 first downs on their next possession, but would eventually turn the ball over on downs to the Tigers at the Tigers44.
Fonda's turn...a 56 yard scamper into the endzone. Rodgers' PAT was good. Tigers 39 East Prairie 0
It appeared the Eagles would run out the clock on the half, but instead the Eagles went to the air. Tiger Jamal Johnson got his 2nd interception on the night, giving the Tigers the ball at the Tigers41 with just seconds left in the half.
Monroe would then get his 3rd carry of the night...a 59 yard TD run as the clock expired! The PAT failed. Halftime score: Tigers 45 East Prairie 0
Decent half for the 2 Tiger runners:
Fonda: 8 carries for 217 yards (27.1 ypc) and 4TDs
Monroe: 3 carries for 139 yards (46.3 ypc) and 3TDs
That is how their night would end, as neither touched the ball again.
The Tigers 2nd team offense took over in the 2nd half, with Hunter Trevathan calling the plays, flanked by either Kendall Pittman or James Johnson. The 2nd half would go quickly with the clock seldom stopping. The only real play worthy of mention in the 3rd quarter would come on the 1st play from scrimmage when Tiger QB Trevathan broke loose for a nice 36 yard run. Otherwise, the two teams just traded possession of the ball.
Senior Tiger Bob Mehrle thrilled the Tiger faithful with several big hits from his defensive end position in the 2nd half.
Aided by a 15 yard Tiger penalty, the Eagles finally mounted a scoring drive, covering 80 yards in 12 plays. The Eagles Frankie Nave, who was a workhorse all night long , finally got the Eagles on the board with a 5 yard TD run. Nave added the PAT, too. Tigers 45 East Prairie 7
The Tigers' 2nd team offense would answer that score quickly. Trevathan broke loose for a 46 yard run. On the next play, Trevathan appeared to have scored from the 10, but a Tiger false start penalty negated the score. From the 15, first year player, Tiger Senior James Johnson would get the call...and would answer, with a 15 yard TD run. Rodgers added the PAT. Tigers 52 East Prairie 7
The Eagles ran 3 plays, as the fast running clock expired.
