Why does Caruthersville have an open date in week 6, Cheese?

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Tue, Jun 12, 2012, at 4:48 PM

Most available opponents that week were too far to drive and the board shut down all the possibilities because of cost of travel.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Tue, Jun 12, 2012, at 5:23 PM

seems like the town could fire up a few car washes, or just plain old ask businesses for a little $....

....I mean how far could it be?

-- Posted by Headhunt on Wed, Jun 13, 2012, at 8:30 AM

Cost of travel? That's a good one!

-- Posted by herbsmith on Wed, Jun 13, 2012, at 10:34 AM

I know Herb! That's just what I was told lol.. It's no biggie though, just one less game and gives them a week off! It's not like they are the first team to ever have a bye week lol

I am shocked Caruthersville elected to not play a full schedule with the playoff format.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Wed, Jun 13, 2012, at 11:41 PM

Looks like Cape beefed up their schedule

-- Posted by hb1025 on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 1:29 AM

How likely is it a team from southeast Missouri will win a state title in football this season?

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 2:34 AM

I think the best shot from Southeast Missouri this season is Caruthersville

-- Posted by Matt Duckworth on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 8:05 AM

Monroe is the only weapon C-Ville has. That will get figured out by playoff time. No one is scared of their passing game.

-- Posted by InYourOpinion on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 8:35 AM

Your right InYourOpinion if you go off last season. All them sophomore's are juniors now. They have a full season under their belt and will only be better this year. They have pretty much their whole offense back from last year, minus Elbie Fonda, but Darrell will fill that role pretty well. He will have an outstanding back-up, freshman, Rodick Jones, who is compared to Darrell Monroe as a freshman. You will return all WR's, who all also play basketball so they are athletes who will have more exp than they did last year. Tyler Grissom I heard had a good Camp and with his 6'4 frame and the ability to run the ball, he will be much improved this year. I feel sorry for the people who sleep on this passing game. My only question mark for this team will be the defense! Lost a few good pieces from last year. We will be returning the Stricklin brothers, Hunter Dickey,Darrell Monroe, and I'm sure others will step up. And if you think Monroe is the only weapon Cville has then your crazy. Everyone will see come kickoff. I see Cville being a top 5 Class 2 team this year and will give Maplewood all they want again. Do I see them going undefeated, No, they will have a couple tough games, esp their first game but it's going to be games like that, that will pay off against teams like Maplewood.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 8:51 AM

IMO none unless you count Valle,C'ville still has to get past Maplewood which is also returning alot of starters.

-- Posted by hb1025 on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 9:37 AM

I agree nobody from this area will win state not even a chance.

-- Posted by BIGELW on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 10:22 AM

Hate to say it but I agree with BIGELW.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 11:03 AM

I agree also! Class 4 and 5 NEVER have a shot at winning state as far I can remember, which isn't that far back lol. Webb City pretty much owns Class 4 and we don't have enough Class 5 teams out there to even think about competing. Class 1 is usually competitive for Semo, or should I say Valle. Class 2 is pretty much owned by the rest of the state, and Class 3 I'm not to sure about either. I think if any team this year has a chance, even if it's a slim chance, it's Caruthersville. I still see Maplewood ending their season again, although it will be another great game. I would say Valle, but man they lost a TON of players from last year. Maybe Hayti will step it up and compete for a Class 1 title. I am just glad we are getting to talk about football again.. Not much of a baseball fan as far as high school sports goes.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 11:18 AM

If any team has a shot, it would be Caruthersville depending on their lineplay. I think defending champion Lamar brings back a lot in Class 2 though along with Maplewood who has already been mentioned.

The only other class I have extensive knowledge about is Class 4. I'd say that whoever gets out between Sikeston and Farmington will go to the semi-finals where they will be sacrificed to Webb City who is now on our side of the bracket.

If Valle has a line like they have had, they will compete in Class 1 as will Thayer who is always pretty good and Hayti who is athletic. That will be a fun district. There may be other teams too. Those are just the ones I know.

In Class 3, Ste. Gen, Park Hills Central, and Dexter will all be at least decent and Fredericktown could be a major darkhorse from what I hear.

In Class 5...well, at least there is a conference title to try for and the district is cake. If Jackson or Bluff comes around, there's no reason why they couldn't be in it. Of course, whoever wins District 2 would just eat them alive. Basically, it is more of the same in SEMO.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 11:33 AM

Anybody who says all Cville lost is Elbie Fonda doesn't know a thing about football. This team lost two anchors on the O Line in Kendric Bradley and Lamar Gray. They also lost Claude Taylor who was a big part of the line for most of last season before getting kicked off the team. Of course they lost Fonda who was their go to player. Monroe plays both sides of the ball so having Fonda was part of the reason he was as good as he was a year ago getting some extra rest. The Tigers O Line is going to be really young and a lot smaller than a year ago. They lost some key parts to their defense. There are no freshman that are varsity caliber players this year please don't believe this hype that they have another freshman like Darrell Monroe. Nobody else around here has another kid like Darrell Monroe so please stop saying that. Maplewood returns their entire team plus they recruit so you know that is going to be a tough game for the Tigers to win. I'm not hating on Cville. I'm just trying to keep it real. We are going to be good just not as good as last year. We lost too many big bodies up front and that is going to kill us against the good teams we have to go against. Darrell is still the man but like somebody else said he is all we've got on offense. Until Grissom actually completes some passes in a game I don't care what he did at some camp.

-- Posted by gocvilletigers on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 12:15 PM

I said all Cville lost on the OFFENSIVE side of the ball was Elbie Fonda. Claude Taylor was not a big part of the team last year, he played 2 to 3 games and was kicked off team. Kendric Bradley stayed hurt for the second half of the season. I'll give you Lamar Gray, but the other two wasn't that big of a help in the long run. The Tigers O-line will be just fine. They return 3 of the 5 starters from my knowledge. No one said anyone is on Darrell's level, I said you can compare him to Monroe as a freshman, meaning when Monroe was a freshman, not now. People said the same thing about Monroe when he got to the Varsity level. I remember people saying he wasn't going to be a big of factor playing high school as he was in middle school. Look how that turned out. Same thing being said about this Jones kid. I know talent, I have watched Caruthersville Football for a LONG time and this JOnes kid has the potential to be really good IF he can stay focused and out of trouble. Of course he is no Monroe! I don't think anyone in Semo actually compares to Monroe, now but this kid has the potential to become just as good. You must have never seen a middle school game. This Jones kid is the real deal, with a little development into the varsity level, and hard work, mark my word, he will be a premier back in Semo in the next 4 years. As far as Grissom is concerned, the kid was a sophomore, first year starter on a team that had two all state running backs, we really didn't have to have him throwing every possession now did we? I know your probably friends with some of the guys you mentioned, so naturally your going to take up for them but let's face facts, Taylor and Bradley wasn't really a big factor in the long run as I stated, Taylor played a few games then was kicked off the team and Bradley stayed hurt the last part of the season. Caruthersville has the chance to get just as far as last year if not further. People said that last year Caruthersville wasn't going to be as good as the previous season but I think that was Cville's best team other than the 2004 team who lost to Blair Oaks. We will all find out soon enough how this team will be.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 1:18 PM

Claude Taylor only played 3 games last season, so he is not a huge loss. Gray and Bradley were big losses, but I believe the Tiger line will actually be rather good this year. I also believe there are more weapons than just Monroe on offense, but the key will be getting the ball in their hands. All that said, Maplewood is going to be very good, but I do predict they will met agin in the quarterfinals for the 3rd straight year.

In Class 1, I would not sleep on Hayti. They are returning a very talented QB and RB combo in Humes and Riddick. They also have receivers who can catch the ball and absolutely fly.

-- Posted by Matt Duckworth on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 1:25 PM

Your right Matt. Humes was pretty good last year and I think he is going to be even better this coming up season. Hayti is always loaded with good size and speed but their main problem is penalties. If they can clean that up, this team could surprise a few people.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 1:43 PM

Yea I agree cheese Humes from Hayti is a quick speedy kid.Is he quarterback or running back. And we know Monroe is Monroe Scarey..lol Shs has a good target in Nicholas an running in gross but will probably be hurting in the QB position. One thing I can say is that Gibbs is an awesome coach so im sure he will take his Dogs as far as they want and can go.The class has gotten bigger and stronger but i think he will continue to bring pride in bulldog football.I dont see Blujays being to good.

-- Posted by stlfan38 on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 4:04 PM

He is Hayti's QB.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Jun 14, 2012, at 5:13 PM

Losing Kendric Bradley was a huge loss for the team. He hurt his foot right at the end of the season and I think he missed one game. Kendric Bradley, Lamar Gray, Elbie Fonda, Darrell Monroe, and Jay Stricklin were the backbone of that team last year. The O Line was good and Cville had the best two runners in the area. All I'm saying is if you lose 3 starters off of your offensive line and then lose one of those runners that is a huge loss because Darrell plays offense and defense. Can he play every snap of the game? I doubt it. He didn't last year. That is where Elbie helped out so much. Elbie was a great player but he also allowed Darrell to just play part time running back and really focus on defense. I agree though that Grissom could be a better player as a junior. He has a lot of experience. However you have to prove it on the field. I have seen the Jones kid play he is a good kid and a good athlete. He is no Monroe and never will be. Monroe is 6'3, 230 pounds and can leap tall buildings in a single bound. Jones isn't as big, isn't as fast, isn't as strong, and he never will be. He might end up being a good player. He might end up being very good. He won't ever be as good as Darrell Monroe. I think Cville will win their district, they might get to the quarters again, but they won't beat Maplewood. I hope they prove me wrong but I'm just giving my honest opinion.

-- Posted by gocvilletigers on Fri, Jun 15, 2012, at 1:59 PM

Darrell won't have to play every snap of a game. That is why you have back-ups. Sure, the duo won't be as good as Fonda/Monroe but let's be honest here, what duo in Semo is/was as good as those two? Elbie wasn't the best running back to start out with, he had to develop. Just like our other young RB's will have to develop, that's part of the game. We have a great coaching staff that will help them get to where they need to be. Throw Jimmy Jackson in the mix, Jones and Trevathan will be good enough the next two years as back-ups to Monroe. Also, with just one experienced back next year and a more experienced Qb and wide receiver core, we will have a more balanced offense than last year which was 10/1 run/pass ratio, so Monroe won't have to have 30 carries a game. Everything will balance out like it always does.

As far as the line play goes, we will be just fine in that area. We won't be as down and you think we are going to be. 3 of the lineman played the majority of last year so they will be experienced enough to get the job done. Other people will step up and fill the roles just fine.

I never said the Jones kid will ever be a Darrell Monroe. I said that he has the potential to be very good in the next 4 years if he gives the right effort. Also, Don't never say never, anything can happen and the Jones kid is still young and still growing. People said that there will never be another William Moore type player come from the bootheel, look at Darrell, he has the ability to be just as good, if not better. I'm just not a fan of saying someone CAN'T or NEVER will be, not my thing. I'll let the kid prove himself on the field.

Mistake on Jackson's schedule the Francis Howell central game is at Home

-- Posted by country man on Tue, Jun 19, 2012, at 4:15 PM

Lots of SEMO teams with holes in the schedule it seems.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Tue, Jun 19, 2012, at 4:23 PM

I noticed on one of the scouting publications, John Burroughs has a player going to Ohio St - Elliot RB. JB plays Cape Central at Central in Week 1. I saw JB play against Ste Gen last year in the playoffs. I remember they had tons of talent, but everyone of their players was doing something so Elliot really doesn't register with me, scored I believe on almost every possession in the first half. Safe to say I will be at Central on Week 1.

-- Posted by lastcall on Thu, Jun 21, 2012, at 1:42 PM

JB had tons of talent last year and i think they all come back this year except their QB and maybe 1 or 2 other starters.

Centrals schedule it TOUGH! I'm all for beefing up a schedule for the new playoff system but you con't want to kill your teams morale during the process.

-- Posted by bulletman on Thu, Jul 5, 2012, at 10:09 AM

*don't*

-- Posted by bulletman on Thu, Jul 5, 2012, at 11:27 AM

Is Jackson really only playing 3 Home games?

-- Posted by PatK on Thu, Jul 5, 2012, at 12:50 PM

Yes I just checked the schedule and that is correct the were scheduled to play Imagine Prep

week 7 and that would have been a home game. but since that school closed that won't be happening.

I don't know if they ran out of time to find a school to play before they had to have the schedule finished or if they just couldn't fine

a team that could or would play them then.

-- Posted by country man on Thu, Jul 5, 2012, at 3:44 PM

with the way the new system is set up does not having a full schedule hurt teams as far as postseason seeding goes

-- Posted by cape222 on Thu, Jul 5, 2012, at 8:08 PM

I think as far as districts goes yes, but once you hit the quarterfinals, I think it's based off who had home field the previous year. Last year it was the odd number, this year it should be the even number. I'm not 100% on that though. Ultimately, the better team will win regardless of SoS. Maybe once you get to the Semi's, it would play a part though

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Thu, Jul 5, 2012, at 8:49 PM

Dexter's Schedule: (According to MaxPreps)

1. Aug. 24 @ Ste. Genevieve

2. Aug. 31 Poplar Bluff

3. Sept. 7 @ Sikeston

4. Sept. 14 @ Caruthersville

5. Sept. 21 Kennett

6. Sept. 28 @ NMCC

7. Oct. 5 Charleston

8. Oct. 12 Park Hills Central

9. Oct. 19 No game yet listed

MaxPreps has been known to make mistakes before so I'm not 100% sure about this. NMCC should come to Dexter this year and we should go to PHC based on last years schedule. Also, I'm guessing that the last game will be against either Malden or Fredericktown. Does anybody know for sure? Personally, I hope it's against Malden as that is a big rivalry game. Go Bearcats!!

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Mon, Jul 16, 2012, at 8:28 PM

Well I guess it won't be Fredericktown. MaxPreps has them hosting North County on Oct. 19.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Mon, Jul 16, 2012, at 8:54 PM

Preacher,

Fredericktown's schedule is set with the only team dropped from last year's being Dexter. Maybe we'll see you in week 11. I think they have a good shot at being in the top 4 for the playoffs.

-- Posted by mojo3 on Tue, Jul 17, 2012, at 9:48 AM

I hope so Mojo3. I've since found out we are playing Malden on Oct. 19.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Tue, Jul 17, 2012, at 11:23 AM

I double-checked Dexter's schedule with the school's on-line activies calendar and it is correct. We go to Malden on Oct. 19. That means we've got 5 away games and 4 home games which kind of stinks. I was wrong above when noting that we should go to Park Hills, but I still don't know why we're going to NMCC two years in a row. They should come to Dexter this season, but we'll just have to make the trip again this year it looks like.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Wed, Jul 18, 2012, at 12:44 PM

Seems like NMCC and Dexter do that a lot for some reason. I think 05-06, 06-07,and 07-08 dexter played at NMCC. Here is NMCC's schedule as far as I know:

1. 8/24 @ Malden

2. 8/31 sikeston

3. 9/07 kennett

4. 9/14 @ charleston

5. 9/21 @ caruthersville

6. 9/28 dexter

7. 10/05 valle catholic

8. 10/12 @ fredericktown

9. 10/18 @ portageville

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Jul 18, 2012, at 3:12 PM

I guess you're right, BuckMajor. Looks like NMCC has beefed up their schedule too, just like alot of SEMO teams. Looks too like you got stuck only playing four home games just like Dexter. How do the Eagles look this season to you, Buck? Personally, to me it looks like a 3-6 or 4-5 season for NMCC.

-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Wed, Jul 18, 2012, at 3:27 PM

yeah I guess we did get stuck with only 4 home games, I just now realized that. At least 4 of them are within a 30 minute drive so thats not bad. Yes the schedule does look different this year, Potosi, poplar bluff, and Cape are all finally off the schedule and malden, portageville, and Valle have all been added. I think they look okay this year. This is certainlly one of the hardest working groups of kids i've seen. The have trained harder this offseason than any team I can remember, and they are working with several great athletic NMCC graduates of those good early 2000's teams. The sophomore class is very athletically talented (though more so at basketball) and they have great potential and room to grow. I think a 3-6 season is a fair assessment, and certainly better than the like 3 games combined theyve won over the past two years haha.

-- Posted by BuckMajor on Wed, Jul 18, 2012, at 5:30 PM

Valle will be a very tough game, but Malden, Kennett, Portageville, and Charleston are all winnable games for NMCC. Good luck to the Eagles this season, Buck (except on Sept. 28 of course, LOL).
