The steady, the shocking, and the sloppy were all on display this week as the SEMO area opened another football season. This year, I'll be providing the forum for all the postgame weekend discussion.
Let's start with the results for Class 4 District 1. Sikeston came into their opener with Charleston knowing the Jays were improved and survived a spirited opponent and a turnover prone offense (6 turnovers?!?) with a great defensive effort. The Dogs were able to get the max 13 points needed for the district standings but I know they would like to have a stronger performance next week. Speaking of improved performance, the semi-finalist Farmington Knights opened their campaign by losing a shocker 16-13 to Festus. While Festus is good, this type of loss is surprising. Cape's loss to John Burroughs (#1 in Class 3) was a bit more expected. Look for them to bounce back next week. Perryville was able to get a great win for their program winning 40-0 over East Prairie. Could this mark the beginning of a turnaround for the Pirates? Also in Class 4, Hillsboro defeated Duchesne by 13, Desoto won by 13 and North County lost to Jackson big.
In Class 5, Jackson and Poplar Bluff both notched impressive wins against the aforementioned North County and Union respectively. Being in a district with only one major contender (Rockwood Summit), one of these programs could jump up and be a potential district champ. Stay tuned.
Ste. Genevieve opened their district defense by defeating fellow district champ Dexter big. While the Bearcats are young, it was a bit surprising got Ste. Gen to get the running clock going. The road to a district title in Class 3 seems to go through them. Park Hills Central did the opposite coming in hyped and falling flat losing to Sullivan big. Meanwhile, Fredericktown routed Kennett, and NMCC lost to Malden.
In Class 2, things shook down shockingly as district favorite Caruthersville was outplayed by Class 2 power Mountain View-Liberty. Their major competitors Charleston and Malden both played and had either moral victories (Charleston) or tangible ones (Malden). In one of the best games of the week, Scott City defeated district rival Herculaneum in overtime. Also, Portageville routed St Pius.
Finally, in Class 1, Thayer reminded state poll voters that Class 1 District 1 isn't just Valle and Hayti as they beat the #10 Indians at home. Watch for these two teams to potentially rematch down the road. Also, Chaffee was able to notch a win against Grandview and St. Vincent had a strong start against Sumner.
Expected you to win, you did: Fredericktown
Expected you to win, you didn't: Farmington
Closer than expected: Sikeston over Charleston
Bigger blowout than expected: Ste. Gen over Dexter
Moving in the right direction: Perryville
In need of some work: Caruthersville
I'll conclude this week with what I'll call the Now-er Rankings. Partially based on scores, expectations, and putting heavier on influence on the most recent games, watch these fluctuate throughout the season.
Now-er Rankings
1) Ste. Genevieve
2) Sikeston
3) Cape Central
4) Caruthersville
5) Farmington
6-Tie) Poplar Bluff
6-Tie) Jackson
8) Fredericktown
9) Dexter
10) Perryville
Thanks for giving this a read and hopefully you can contribute to the discussion below. Tell me what you like, hate, agree or disagree with, and your own analysis from what you saw. I'm excited for the season.
Please excuse a few typos. This was done on iPhone.

Cape Central is one of the biggest class 4 teams in the state and they cant keep it closer than that with John Burroughs at home?
-- Posted by Sonic-The-Hedgehog on Fri, Aug 24, 2012, at 11:50 PM
I would put Perryville above Dexter. Also, I think Cape and Caruthersville had tough first games and are a little harder to gauge where they actually are in Semo. We will learn more about them next week and where they stand in Semo. I honestly think Cape is the best team in Semo. They played JB pretty tough at first, although a Class 3 team, they are one of the better teams in the state, regardless of any class. It's all good though, in a couple more weeks, we will know where most teams rank.
-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Aug 24, 2012, at 11:50 PM
Exactly. These ranks are more for fun and interest than anything. Not like basketball where they mean the world. Hah.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Aug 24, 2012, at 11:52 PM
Ste. Gen was very impressive tonight. They have a MONSTER offensive line and they just manhandled Dexter tonight on both sides of the ball. They did not play their typical spread offense tonight and I wouldn't look for them to run it at all this season.
Dexter made the mistakes of inexperience tonight plus early injuries to 2 key starters also hurt us. We will get better and be a force come playoff time.
On the rankings tonight, Sideline, I would still put Park Hills or Fredericktown over Perryville. The Pirates played a very weak East Prairie team while the Rebels played a very good Sullivan squad. Its a little early for me to jump on the Perryville bandwagon.
Biggest surprises to me tonight were how close Charleston played Sikeston; that Malden and Poplar Bluff got such big lopsided wins; and that Caruthersville got beat so badly.
Can't wait for Week 2!
-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 12:26 AM
Just wanted to give the Pirates some love for the big win Preach. Like I said, these are not really my Best in SEMO rankings. It's tough to do that so early.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 12:32 AM
THANK-YOU Cheesehead!! The Pirates were amazing! Just saw 2 years of hard work come together! Saw a TEAM play together! Players thanking other players...congratulating team mates! Once 1st TD was made-the excitement just grew! I too believe they do rank higher! This is just the beginning! This group is special!!

Really do not see how Hayti was ranked above Thayer to start with.Hayti has not beat Thayer in the past 6 years they have played against each other.Play offs and districts.

I found the Sikeston Offense to be very sluggish and the blocking atrocious. The plays seemed to be out of sync most of the time.
Sikestons defense was excellent, I liked the penetration of the D line and the pursuit...totally way better than the offense.
I did see potential in the offense, it's just the backs didn't wait for the holes to open up. There were also way too many backfield mess ups like ill timed handoffs....
If Charleston had been a better team Sikeston would have been in big trouble.
-- Posted by cadult10 on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 4:38 AM
Calm down Guest you played East prairie!!!! U didn't know they even existed!!!!!
-- Posted by Bleed Green on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 7:32 AM
a great start to the season for the mules! granted, union only returned 1 starter from last year's undefeated team and their coach is now guiding jackson, but pb was impressive. defense was stellar all night and the offense turned turnovers into points. with a win at dexter next week, pb could get off to their first 2-0 start in almost a decade.
-- Posted by myershallred on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 8:29 AM
Yes, sideline needs a column.
-- Posted by rocketsbro (Moderator) on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 8:31 AM
SCA big three did good job on ranked opp. beating Cr-ville, Hayti, and Rogersville. Liberty is only ranked SCA team.
-- Posted by cullconley on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 8:51 AM
Festus defeating Farmington was totally unexpected. Tip of the hat to Festus. Sullivan is outside of the SEMO region but trust me, the Eagles of Sullivan are LOADED and have an extremely talented football team.
-- Posted by blackgold on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 9:02 AM
Congrats on the Dragons's big win last night Bleed Green. One thing you won't get from me is excuses. We had two key injuries but that's part of the game. The only thing I will grumble about was the touchdown the refs took away from us in the first quarter on that phantom fumble call. On the call before that our WR fell into the endzone and they spotted the ball on the one-yard line! But even that extra TD wouldn't have made much difference. Ste. Gen was very impressive and you have a MONSTER line. No doubt the Terrana kid will be playing D1 college football next season.

If #15 doesn't stay heathy for the bearcats then they are gonna have problems!
-- Posted by REDDIRT DOG on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 11:51 AM
Great job Blue Jays! That's the way you play a 4A team. I'm looking forward to more great games! Love those Blue Jays!!!!!
-- Posted by silentplayer on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 12:23 PM
I thought #10 ran well for Dexter when they went to the fullhouse shotgun formation. Unfortunately, teams will stack up the L.O.S. in this formation when the game is still on the hline.Thought the Stevens kid threw well in pregame warmup. Thought maybe coach would have gave him some snaps.
-- Posted by Horizontal Stretch on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 2:04 PM
Are we really giving Perryville this much respect after pounding a 1-9 team last year who is half its size at best? Teams who I would stick in the 10 spot at least, Thayer, Hayti, maybe even Charleston after not just getting blown out. If you have Ste. Gen in there Im assuming Valle would be eligible for the rankings and id imagine theyd be somewhere in the top 10?
-- Posted by NeverWasBeen on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 2:41 PM
Valle didn't play until today. They are whooping some small Catholic school from Columbia I've never heard of. Like I said, it's really tough to get a gauge on who is really good until after about Week 4. The first few weeks, as noted in the description, are marked by teams achieving in comparison to expectation, puts emphasis on most recent games, as well as skill level, etc. Wanted to give the Pirates a little shoutout for actually getting a blowout win after being in such doldrums the past few years.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 2:52 PM
Oh I understand completely, especially difficult on keep track of all the teams from the bottom of the boot to Ste Gen/ Farmington area.
-- Posted by NeverWasBeen on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 3:13 PM
Yeah, real tough with the stuff north of Perryville. Only reason I keep up with it now is because Semo Sports Web is shut down so all those fans have migrated over here.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 3:19 PM
Yeah, Valle went final, 61-0. But the team they played was a first year program with no seniors. I would've expected nothing less with the success theyve had. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say winner of Class 1 District 1 will represent the east side this year in the dome.

MRH 35 MICDS 19
-- Posted by stlscott on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 3:53 PM
Thanks. I was curious about that one. I guess it confirms MICDS won't be quite the contender they were last year.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 3:59 PM
A little surprised at the Perryville hype on the board. A week ago they were getting no love at all. I didnt think they were as bad as some folks thought , nor do I think the're as good as some are making them out now.
All they did was beat a bad class 2 team and played their starters the whole way.
Across town SV was playing class 3 Sumner and won 45-22.
With the last 2 Sumner TDs coming against the SV JV.
It would seem that victory was more impressive.
-- Posted by nature boy on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 4:05 PM
Sideline MRH is a loaded team though MICDS is pretty good.
-- Posted by stlscott on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 4:09 PM
I know MICDS is good. Just not the offensive juggernaut of last year.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 4:22 PM
LSW is putting it on Staley 23-0, alot thought staley was dominant team in mo.
-- Posted by stlscott on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 4:35 PM
Sideline knows what it takes to get a column/blog around here and has thus far declined the opportunity.
-- Posted by Rachel Crader (Moderator) on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 6:25 PM
Perryville is Bad no matter what anyone says!! Im the only one that will admit it though! They beat East Prairie and like someone said way to keep starters in a run up score! Thats gonna improve your program! Big win for SV though way to play up and beat a good descent program!!

blackgold....
You are absolutely correct when you said Sullivan is loaded. That's a GOOD football team.
-- Posted by zachattack on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 7:55 PM
Perryville will have a good season this year. I look for them to win 3 games total. 3-10 but hey, improvement, correct? Like to see that Sullivan-Phills game and Caruthersville-Mt.View..but I did hear two weeks ago Sullivan was loaded, and the person that told me so was absolutely correct. How good is Fredtown?
-- Posted by Horizontal Stretch on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 8:10 PM
Iteresting thread. I agree with sideline's Top 10, but as said it is early. How good is FredMo? Well, how good is Kennett? I will tell you, I saw some monster kids on the O/D lines for the Indians. #4 is one slick QB with some great scrambling ability. Seems to me that team could give a few folks a good game later in the year, if they can get rid of some mistakes.
I don't think I've ever seen as many time-outs for kids cramping up as I saw last night, not to mention the ones that got off the field before needing one!
If the Blackcats can play Hillsboro well next week and either keep the score close or eek out a win, I'd say they are vastly improved over last year.

-- Posted by sideline starter on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 10:56 PM
Mojo I think every skill player from Sikeston cramped up last year against Gateway, It was unreal!
-- Posted by Sonic-The-Hedgehog on Sat, Aug 25, 2012, at 11:23 PM
did you see the video clip of sumner? they don't looking a "good descent school." they won 1 game last year. yeah let's all get excited about our schools winning but with the new system a let's keep in context of what school you played. My team blew someone out but the team we played wasn't very good we will get our true tests in a few weeks. It's nice to see a program turning it around but don't jump to conclusions because you may just fall on hard times when your team gets a reality check
-- Posted by sportsnerd on Sun, Aug 26, 2012, at 8:26 AM
If you wanna talk about the new system then you have to give St vincents credit for being smart enough finding a weak team two classes up to get bonus points

I agree semocentralfan1.. I think Cape is probably the best team in Semo this year. Of course, they will need to get over that Sikeston hump, but I think that game will one of the better games in Semo this year.
-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Sun, Aug 26, 2012, at 1:02 PM
Sideline, I'll try! Hillsboro ran a double wing formation last year and had a Rb (think his name was Rion, I hope he graduated) that could run circles around most kids. However, they were facing an undersized FredMo team without much depth. This year we have them at home and looks like the Blackcats are finally stacked up with some really good back-up players. I'm looking for a closer game. Hillboro played Duchesne who were 4-6 last year playing a tough Suburban West schedule while the Hawks finished 9 & 1 against so - so opponents. So again how good are the Hawks? We'll see.
-- Posted by mojo3 on Sun, Aug 26, 2012, at 2:19 PM
Sonic, I figured there were several other games like that around. If not something wierd was going on in Kennett!
-- Posted by mojo3 on Sun, Aug 26, 2012, at 2:21 PM
Charleston is looking pretty good they did stay in tuned with a 4a school and went toe to toe 4 full quarters with them i believe CVILL will have a hand full come Friday.. Especially with the QB/FS Michael Hull and WR/FS Sumner Foster they have a phenomenal pitch and catch game on offense and a spectacular defense IQ they just need a little work.. GOOD GAME Jays come back next Friday and lets do something with CVILL...

yea i see that now but no you have no Elbe Fonda and
i believe they can contain Monroe looking forward to not this Friday but next hahaha.....
-- Posted by BLUEjayMANdude on Sun, Aug 26, 2012, at 3:05 PM
Let's be honest, the Jays offense wasn't exactly electric against Sikeston Friday. They had 89 yards of total offense and scored only one touchdown (the other was a fumble recovery return) while continuously being put into good field situations and not capitalizing. I'd like to see them play somebody else before we go saying the offense is phenomenal.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Sun, Aug 26, 2012, at 3:11 PM
I agree Sideline.. I mean, Caruthersville losses to probably the Class 2 State Champion this year, and now everyone thinks they can do what MVL did. It's not that easy. Lot's of factors played in that loss to MVL, some they caused, but some were mistakes of our own. We did play without our star WR but I don't think that would have mattered anyway. First games can go either way, if we were to play them later in the season, the game could have been totally different. I hope everyone has that mentality playing Cville this year, could be in for a surprise.
As far as Charleston/Sikeston goes, I watched the game. I think Sikeston hurt themselves more than Charleston hurt them. Like Caruthersville, they are replacing key parts of the team, there will be a learning process but expect both Sikeston and Caruthersville to be greatly improved as the season goes on. Also, didn't Sikeston lose some coaching staff? That in itself will have to get worked out to. Caruthersville lost their linemen coach so they are both kinda in the same boat. Heard the same talk last year about the Jays/Tigers matchup.. This year it seems is no different.
-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Sun, Aug 26, 2012, at 3:21 PM
They played a 4A school there 2A come on now they were predicted to lose 51-6 the outcome was way better then previous years and if i recall it cvill lost 48-12 one score from Monroe on a KR and one from a reverse.. and clearly Charleston had some problems with Turnovers but Cvill had fumble trouble and turnover trouble come on now .. #get real
-- Posted by BLUEjayMANdude on Sun, Aug 26, 2012, at 3:22 PM
Who said they didn't? I know Caruthersville played horrible, I think everyone knows that. If you think Charleston can do what MVL did to Cville, then you really need to #getreal.. Some of you Charleston posters have a hard time reading and comprehending. I guess we will find out in on the 7th.. I'll tell you the same thing I told Slick50 from last year, come by and say hello at the game, always like meeting new people. He never showed though, I wonder what happened to him?

Do me a favor silentplayer, please define "hater"?
Sideline was just making a point about their offense not being phenomenal. It wasn't an opinion, but a fact! They had 89 total yards of offense! By my calculations, that is not that great of an offense.
As far as my comments towards Charleston, I was just responding to bluejay573 for his comments about Caruthersville and what the Jays were going to do to them. After all, we don't have Fonda. I guess it's okay for you Charleston posters to have an opinion about things but if anyone else throws in their's, we are labeled "haters".. Still not sure what the definition of a hater is. Maybe you can enlighten me.

No i will never say what a team will do to another one because anything can happen on any given day. But also I would never put another team down, regardless of what someone else may say. Charleston played a darn good game considering they only had 31 on the roster. Most of the boys had to play offense and defense with little or no rest. I will not speak against Cville. Cville had a good team last year and I'm quite sure they have a good team this year but I do believe them Blue Jays will give them a run for their money. As far as haters, you define it yourself. Because I am quite sure that you can. I am all about building and not to tear down! Peace my brother! Go Blue Jays!!!!!
-- Posted by silentplayer on Sun, Aug 26, 2012, at 10:59 PM

-- Posted by silentplayer on Sun, Aug 26, 2012, at 11:07 PM
That's true, anything can happen on a given day but that doesn't stop there from being a favorite to win a game. I have nothing against Charleston, and as a matter of fact, before the season ever began, I said they were going to be a team that will be dangerous this year. I think Charleston and Caruthersville will have the top 2 seeds in district's this year. Charleston needs to focus on Hayti this year, they are going to be a handful themselves. I'll just end it here. See you on the 7th. Look for me on the 50, top of bleachers!!! Go Tigers!!!!

Stay tuned.

Watch for these two teams to potentially rematch down the road. Also, Chaffee was able to notch a win against Grandview and St. Vincent had a strong start against Sumner.
Expected you to win, you did: Fredericktown
Expected you to win, you didn't: Farmington
Closer than expected: Sikeston over Charleston
Bigger blowout than expected: Ste. Gen over Dexter
Moving in the right direction: Perryville
In need of some work: Caruthersville
I'll conclude this week with what I'll call the Now-er Rankings. Partially based on scores, expectations, and putting heavier on influence on the most recent games, watch these fluctuate throughout the season.
Now-er Rankings
1) Ste. Genevieve
2) Sikeston
3) Cape Central
4) Caruthersville
5) Farmington
6-Tie) Poplar Bluff
6-Tie) Jackson
8) Fredericktown
9) Dexter
10) Perryville

On the rankings tonight, Sideline, I would still put Park Hills or Fredericktown over Perryville. The Pirates played a very weak East Prairie team while the Rebels played a very good Sullivan squad. Its a little early for me to jump on the Perryville bandwagon.
Biggest surprises to me tonight were how close Charleston played Sikeston; that Malden and Poplar Bluff got such big lopsided wins; and that Caruthersville got beat so badly.
Can't wait for Week 2!
Just wanted to give the Pirates some love for the big win Preach. Like I said, these are not really my Best in SEMO rankings. It's tough to do that so early.
It is not possible for me to love the name of this thread any more than I do...
It's like I should have a column around here or something.
Really do not see how Hayti was ranked above Thayer to start with.Hayti has not beat Thayer in the past 6 years they have played against each other.Play offs and districts.
Starter.......well done
Appreciate it Headhunt.
Calm down Guest you played East prairie!!!! U didn't know they even existed!!!!!
a great start to the season for the mules! granted, union only returned 1 starter from last year's undefeated team and their coach is now guiding jackson, but pb was impressive. defense was stellar all night and the offense turned turnovers into points. with a win at dexter next week, pb could get off to their first 2-0 start in almost a decade.
Yes, sideline needs a column.
SCA big three did good job on ranked opp. beating Cr-ville, Hayti, and Rogersville. Liberty is only ranked SCA team.
Festus defeating Farmington was totally unexpected. Tip of the hat to Festus. Sullivan is outside of the SEMO region but trust me, the Eagles of Sullivan are LOADED and have an extremely talented football team.
Great job Blue Jays! That's the way you play a 4A team. I'm looking forward to more great games! Love those Blue Jays!!!!!
Valle didn't play until today. They are whooping some small Catholic school from Columbia I've never heard of. Like I said, it's really tough to get a gauge on who is really good until after about Week 4. The first few weeks, as noted in the description, are marked by teams achieving in comparison to expectation, puts emphasis on most recent games, as well as skill level, etc. Wanted to give the Pirates a little shoutout for actually getting a blowout win after being in such doldrums the past few years.
Oh I understand completely, especially difficult on keep track of all the teams from the bottom of the boot to Ste Gen/ Farmington area.
Yeah, real tough with the stuff north of Perryville. Only reason I keep up with it now is because Semo Sports Web is shut down so all those fans have migrated over here.
Thanks. I was curious about that one. I guess it confirms MICDS won't be quite the contender they were last year.
Sideline MRH is a loaded team though MICDS is pretty good.
I know MICDS is good. Just not the offensive juggernaut of last year.
LSW is putting it on Staley 23-0, alot thought staley was dominant team in mo.
Sideline knows what it takes to get a column/blog around here and has thus far declined the opportunity.
Perryville is Bad no matter what anyone says!! Im the only one that will admit it though! They beat East Prairie and like someone said way to keep starters in a run up score! Thats gonna improve your program! Big win for SV though way to play up and beat a good descent program!!
Ignorance is bliss....amazing statements made on here after ONE week of football...cluelessBALL has struck again!!
blackgold....
You are absolutely correct when you said Sullivan is loaded. That's a GOOD football team.
I wish this board had an edit button like the other site did!
Mojo, will you be at the Freddy-Hillsboro game Friday? I'm interested in an eyewitness account from someone who knows how to keep bias out of the way like you on how Hillsboro looks.
Mojo I think every skill player from Sikeston cramped up last year against Gateway, It was unreal!
did you see the video clip of sumner? they don't looking a "good descent school." they won 1 game last year. yeah let's all get excited about our schools winning but with the new system a let's keep in context of what school you played. My team blew someone out but the team we played wasn't very good we will get our true tests in a few weeks. It's nice to see a program turning it around but don't jump to conclusions because you may just fall on hard times when your team gets a reality check
If you wanna talk about the new system then you have to give St vincents credit for being smart enough finding a weak team two classes up to get bonus points
Good sir for being a nerd of any type that second sentance is awfully hard to process
I agree semocentralfan1.. I think Cape is probably the best team in Semo this year. Of course, they will need to get over that Sikeston hump, but I think that game will one of the better games in Semo this year.
We'll see.
Sonic, I figured there were several other games like that around. If not something wierd was going on in Kennett!
Caruthersville plays Malden friday night Bluejay573. I'd expect the Caruthersville/Charleston game to be much like last year
Caruthersville plays Malden friday night Bluejay573. I'd expect the Caruthersville/Charleston game to be much like last year
yea i see that now but no you have no Elbe Fonda and
i believe they can contain Monroe looking forward to not this Friday but next hahaha.....
#get real
He never showed though, I wonder what happened to him?
ill be there matter fact ill be playing in the game so when i score a Touchdown im will remember to wave to you in the stands big man haha
Haha..Ah! That explains a lot then! Sure thing, just let me know who you are and if you do score a touchdown, I'll be sure to wave at you. Look for me at the 50 yard line, very top of the bleachers. Good Luck against the Tigers!!!
I would like to pause this conversation and say that I am absolutely stunned that bluejay573 is a player. Who could've known?? Christopher Nolan must be writing this script
no im just kidding but i will surely have on of the players wave at you for me ..
Cheese Cville will be fine! That's a tough loss especially on the road and first game of year! I wish u guys luck this week and hope your 7&1 heading into week 9!!!
Let's go Blue Jays!!!!! Defeat your haters! Keep up the good work!!! Remember to always strive for success regardless of what people may say.
Defeat your haters Cheesehead and Caruthersville! Keep up the good work!!! Remember to always strive for success regardless of what people may say.
LOL
Sideline that is a great post!!! I just love the way you tell them to defeat their haters and to strive for success. Encourage, encourage, encourage! Way to go, dude! Lets go Blue Jays!!!!!
