Southern Illinois has many more teams than SEMO so there may be more better teams in terms of quantity, but probably also many more poor football teams as well. I don't know about right now as I haven't seen football over there in several years, but in the 90s I never was very impressed with football over there. Sikeston used to play Marion and Carbondale and every year those teams were among the worst on Sikeston's schedule. DuQuoin is a consistent powerhouse over there that could probably match up with the better SEMO teams most years. But I doubt Southern Illinois teams could have toppled the Jackson teams of the late 90s and early 2000s or the 2009 and 2010 Sikeston teams. Just my opinion and nothing more to base it on other than hunches and knowing a little about Southern Illinois.

SEMO teams by far! Look at state titles I bet there's more state titles in SEMO then S Illinois!!!

Do you think football is more popular in Southern Illinois?I watched their coverage of football the other day on Channel 3 and it was really good! Well I guess anything is great when compared to channel 12
-- Posted by Kobeyashi on Thu, Aug 30, 2012, at 9:51 AM
I dont get channel 12 I have Direct Tv but STL channels do a great job of covering high school football! When I was in school 93-96 channel 12 did a pretty good job
-- Posted by Bleed Green on Thu, Aug 30, 2012, at 9:59 AM
Sorry, everyone, but SEMO football is not real impressive. Basketball, is obviously another story. Take away Valle's state titles (since they really are not a true "SEMO" team), and how many state titles does the region have in football? St. Vincent had one or two in the early 00's I think. I don't think NMCC won it in the early 00's with Tipler. Jackson had an appearance or two in the Dome in the 90's, but no title. I just don't know of too many state champs in recent years. I'm sure I'm missing some tho. At least I hope I am...
-- Posted by kools&oe on Thu, Aug 30, 2012, at 10:35 AM
I hate to break it to you but SG county is considered South east mo!! You might not consider it but it is! So yes you should count Valles state titles as well as SG!!
-- Posted by Bleed Green on Thu, Aug 30, 2012, at 10:42 AM
Did some research and found three state champs from SEMO region. Perryville (wow!) in 1968. Chaffee in 1983. St. Vincent in 2004. (May have missed some, as I was surveying the list rather hastily.) So, although, some may feel the quality of SEMO football exceeds that of So. Ill., it would be hard to believe So. Ill. has brought home fewer than three Illinois state titles over the past 45 years. As far as sheer who's better on the field? No idea on that one, as I've seen exactly zero So. Ill. teams play in my life.
-- Posted by kools&oe on Thu, Aug 30, 2012, at 10:47 AM
DuQuoin 2 titles (5x-2nd place), Harrisburg 1 title (2x-2nd place), Carterville 1 title, Anna-Jonesboro 1 title, Sessar -Valier 1 title. Southern Illinois is generally thought of as I-64 south in the minds of Illinois. It encompassed the Metro Area of East St. Louis. But I won't count that. East St. Louis Sr. was the Jefferson City of Illinois for a long time.
Ive watched a lot of both sides. Really there isn't much difference. I see quality and some real non quality on both sides. I think the DuQuoin and Harrisburg teams of the late 90's- early 2000's could've competed with Jackson of that same time period. Nashville had power house teams then but had to go through either DuQuoin or Harrisburg to advance. Very similar teams. Power football with solid backs. DuQuoin put a QB at SIU that was all american and lead SIU to the National semi-finals twice.
I think Sikeston and Caruthersville of the last few years and New Madrid of the Tipler era would be right in that mix.
-- Posted by Attaboy on Thu, Aug 30, 2012, at 5:30 PM
I would say a solid football team from southeast Mo would compete with a solid football team from Southern Illinois and vice versa. Just because there is a big river between us doesn't change the kids.

Let's not starting counting championship in each area of both states will add another 3 or 4 classes so more schools will win championships.
-- Posted by Bogey Man on Fri, Aug 31, 2012, at 10:49 AM
There's at least 15 state titles inSemo!!! 12 come from SG county!!
-- Posted by Bleed Green on Fri, Aug 31, 2012, at 10:55 AM
So if you take Ste. Genevieve County out of the Southest Missouri area, which they are not, then SEMO area has 3 all time state football championships. Not very impressive to say the least. I would have to agree, with that track record, I don't see how anyone could say SEMO is a strong high school football area. Definitely is weak!!
-- Posted by Bogey Man on Fri, Aug 31, 2012, at 11:23 AM
I agree with half of that! I don't think most teams south of SG are all that! You can't call yourself a PROGRAM If your not consistent with WL and making playoffs!! The top program south of SG would be IMO Sikeston then Cville that's it I know New Madrid was ok for a few years! Jackson has sucked since 90's Hayti a few years but that's all well St vincent was good for 2 or 3 years!! When people in the state of Mo think SEMO football they think VALLE and SG sorry peeps just telling u the truth!! SG county is a HOT bed for football talent!!!!
-- Posted by Bleed Green on Fri, Aug 31, 2012, at 11:40 AM
Sikeston has a pretty storied program for SEMO. The problem for them was that they had an absolute decade of utter dominance in the fifties under Coach Sapp but there was no state title back in the day. Some of their other great teams from the late seventies with James Wilder and the like got stuck playing against all those huge public schools who are now large Class 5 & 6 schools when they got to the playoffs and were just outmatched by size. After some down years in the middle of this last decade, Gibbs has brought them back to their former prominence. Sikeston was the first team in Missouri to win 400 games and is one of five who has won 600 and could soon pass Chilicothe to once again be fourth on the all-time list behind large school powers Rockhurst, Webster Groves, and Jefferson City. Jackson is in the same boat having won around 575 games I believe. Look for them to crack the 600 mark in the next three or four years. Each of them have been playing for 100+ years so periods of three to five years or whatever of being down are going to happen. Those two teams, for all the history of Missouri high school football, have consistently been among the best and are the two along with Valle when people think of SEMO football (if they count Valle as part of SEMO). Ste. Genevieve and Caruthersville are up there pretty high as well but do not have the large amount of hardware like Valle nor have the historical records like Sikeston and Jackson.
-- Posted by sideline starter on Fri, Aug 31, 2012, at 12:02 PM
Can't argue most of that but Jackson! You cannot compare Jackson to SG Maybe Cville but that's pushing it!! Jackson hasn't been good since 90's Jackson is not a elite program bottom line!! Top 3 in SEMO Valle Sikeston SG
-- Posted by Bleed Green on Fri, Aug 31, 2012, at 12:26 PM
Jackson went to the Class 5 semi-finals in 07 or 08 I believe. They've only been down about three or four years. You've gotta be consistent to reach 570+ wins. They are in the conversation. Watch for them in the next few years. I think their new coach, Eckley, is going to do for their program what Gibbs did for Sikeston. He is pretty good.

And I'm not talking crap on SV I agree they had some descent years but answer this ? How wins did Valle have those years? Valle was down those years and that's why u even made it!! U had a good kicker whoop whoop that's all!! And I think in my previous post I mentioned SV as one as top but your not even close to Sikeston Valle or SG Sorry Charlie! Hey got any mulch for sale?

Valle's schedule has been soft since the MAAA conference changed to MAFC with 3 divisions. Some of the Valle teams in the '80s and '90s could have played with any school in any class in the state. The same couldn't be said today. And the truth is that they have a big advantage in that they are drawing students from a county of 20,000 people and playing a bunch of rural small town high schools of less than 2,000 people to draw from.
Same advantage Cape Notre Dame and all private schools have in all sports - the size of the school isn't nearly as important as the size of the population you get to draw your athletes from.

Bogey Man I AGREE with you 110% I argued the same point last year! But you are right about one thing those teams in the 90's and 80's were awesome!! They pounded 4a schools all the time!! I just like to argue trust me I am not a Valle supporter at all!!
-- Posted by Bleed Green on Fri, Aug 31, 2012, at 1:54 PM
Adam Schwent!! I don't care what anyone says he Carried a BAD SG team on his shoulders all year!! In a 5 game span he rushed for over 1400 yds he crushed the state rushing record and wad a all state LB as well!! I have never seen one kid carry a team like that! Without him they win 3 games!!!!!
-- Posted by Bleed Green on Fri, Aug 31, 2012, at 1:59 PM
Adam Schwent does not have the single season state rushing record. I believe Brad Hocker of Archie still holds that title.
-- Posted by kools&oe on Fri, Aug 31, 2012, at 2:13 PM
The record holder isn't Brad Hocker, but rather Lee Flood of Marionville. He broke the record his Jr year then broke his own record his Sr year. The current record is 3316 yards in a single season. Adam Schwent rushed for 2950 in 2003 and is currently 6th on the list.
-- Posted by sm0723 on Fri, Aug 31, 2012, at 2:35 PM
Schwent was 144 yards from passing Hocker who set the record with 3094 yards in 1989. Robbie Allen rushed for 3005 yards in 1989 as well. Schwent finished with 2950 yards. Hocker's record has since been broken twice, by Lee Flood in 2005 and 2006. I will agree, though, that Schwent did not have too much talent surrounding him in 2003. In regard to TheDaddy's question, I feel Ste. Genevieve is kind of in between SEMO and the STL regions. Some websites regard the county as SEMO, some do not. If Ste. Genevieve is in the SEMO region, there would seem to be more coverage on SEMOBall, as there is rarely an article relating to SG or Valle.
-- Posted by kools&oe on Fri, Aug 31, 2012, at 2:39 PM
Upon further inspection, SG and Valle are not even listed among the schools in the dropdown menu on the SEMOBall homepage. Just kind of in no man's land I guess.

I saw Schwent play a few times, including his senior year against NMCC in a sectional game. He was a one-man show. Very impressive effort on his part. I won't go as far to say he's the best ever to come out of SEMO, but I will say he is ONE of the best running backs I've seen on the high school level. I posted a link to an article of the game I saw. The Dragons ended up making the state title game and Schwent was knocked out of game with a leg injury on the opening play. They got whooped....no contest without him. He ended up signing with SEMO, but never could shake the injuries.
-- Posted by semohoops on Fri, Aug 31, 2012, at 4:16 PM
He was he had no help at all!! SG would of won 3 games that year without him!! Harrisonville coach said that the outcome of the game would of been diff if he had played!! The kid was awesome to bad his knee couldn't hold up!! You should of saw the state semi he took the opening kick off back 99 yds and then rushed for 285 yds on 27 carries and 4 TD!!!
