Surprises through 2 games.....
Posted by myershallred on Sat, Sep 1, 2012, at 4:15 PM:

in my opinion, there are a few surprising things through two weeks of the football season that i'm sure most of us didn't see coming:

*portageville is 2-0

*pb is 2-0 after winning only 3 games the last 2 years.

*hayti is off to an unusual 0-2 start.

*charleston is 1-1 including giving sikeston all they wanted.

*sikeston is 2-0 but the dogs haven't didn't roll over charleston or nmcc like recent years.

*jackson is 2-0 after being down the last few years.

which of these storylines, or others, are most intriguing so far to everybody?

I think the team nobody is talking about is Freddy! There pretty solid had a chance to watch the game yesterday there going to be a hand full for any team including SG coach Henson does not get enough credit he is probably my favorite coach behind coach Weiler! Also I believe SG needs more credit if there QB can improve week to week they could make some noise in the playoffs!

I think it would have to be Kennett having a very poor showing against Portageville. Kennett is bottom tier in terms of enrollment for Class 4 they have got to have the athletes and coaching to compete with a Class 1 school that is bottom tier in enrollment.

In the last 3 seasons Kennett has yet to win more than 3 games in a season.

-- Posted by wheresthebeef on Sat, Sep 1, 2012, at 6:54 PM

Kennett is 3A in football only moved to 4A in Basketball but with that being said you are right on the money. There is no way with the athletes that come through there that they should not be decent every once in awhile. This years team looks to have about as much talent as any team there in the last several years minus Grantham of course. It is probably not easy to get a good coach to come to Kennett but they have got to find a coach who has went into a similar situation at another school and managed to turn it around. Gilmore seems to be an obvious choice but I don't guess the school board will let him do it. At this point I am predicting a 1-9 season. Beating E.P. who seems to be down.

I think it has to be Jackson and I'm a Central fan. They dominated a good Vianney team. If they dominate farmington this week then I think they are for real.

-- Posted by bulletman on Sat, Sep 1, 2012, at 9:21 PM

I think Malden is better than expected. Losing Murphy I thought would have hurt them as I am sure it did but they seem to be hanging in there. NMCC is who I am on the fence about. Malden beat them but Sikeston barely beat them. Either Sikeston is down or NMCC isn't as bad as they played last week. The NMCC and Kennett game once again should determine who is going to have the longest season.

My biggest surprizes are Hillsboro and Kennett. After a 9-1 season, Hillsboro looks real inexperienced. My opinion they will get better and have a decent season in the end. Kennett looks to have several good athletes, but can they get it together to salvage a decent season?

Mild surprize is my Blackcats. I figured they would be better, but are they good enough to contend for #1 slot in district play and win it all? Possible. The tough games on the schedule look to be STG & MRH, they win those it's a great season. Not to look past PHC or Potosi, those teams have a way of playing well against FredMo.

Another is Perryville they should be 2-0 after today, but those are not very good teams. A W is a W however.

Perryville is leading Lift for Life 6-0 after the first quarter.

Lift for Life leading 12-6 after the third quarter.

Looks like in 3A St. Gen and Ftown are in a class of their own.

-- Posted by X-Man on Mon, Sep 3, 2012, at 3:14 PM

Perryville wins 13-12.

Freddy is pretty good but Not in the same class as SG!! SG has a very tough game Friday forecast is calling do rain all day if so that favors the SG and there size! Freddy played ok Friday but Hillsboro is pretty weak this year I do believe Freddy is def the 2 best team in Dist. If SG can win this game on Friday the should be undefeated heading to cville and what I'm told so far from a source cville is far from the team they were last year! I talk to a guy who was at the mt view cville game and he said neither team could compete with Mwood! So this week will tell a lot about the future!!

-- Posted by Bleed Green on Mon, Sep 3, 2012, at 6:28 PM

Good thing the games are played on the field and not through sources.

True, Caruthersville doesn't have the team they had last year but, if you think they won't get any better from now til then, your crazy. Our offense will be plenty good enough, it's just our defense needs some work. We lost some great seniors last year but with some hard work and some game experience, they will give SG all they want.

SG has played a Dexter team that lost everyone but 4 starters last year, and a Valle team that lost pretty much their whole team. When SG plays a team on their level, we will have a better gauge of how good they are. Maplewood will definitely be that gauge. Still lots of football left to be played!

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Mon, Sep 3, 2012, at 6:47 PM

I would have to say the biggest surprise in two weeks are the bulldogs being 2-0 I myself think they have changed the program there and think there gonna be giving a lot of coaches in semo headaches and sleepless nights trying to figure out how to stop them defensively there solid as a rock only allowing 21 points through two games and offensively there do tough to stop running the ball and if a team does happen to be able to stop them which I've yet to see they can really throw the ball this year too I see Portageville making a run in the state playoffs.

-- Posted by Semopost13 on Mon, Sep 3, 2012, at 6:47 PM

That Valle team could win 2A! I think Valle is just as good as last year. I didn't say cville isn't any good I said my guy said neither cville or Mt view could play with Mwood! All I gotta say is it's still 7 weeks a way but between now and then cville better learn how to pass cause u won't Run on SG there to big and strong and pretty darn fast for avg 6'2 245 lb!! I personally believe its going to be a good game but like I said we will see how things go Friday! The key to that game is the play of SG QB if he plays well they win if not they will loose.

-- Posted by Bleed Green on Mon, Sep 3, 2012, at 7:19 PM

I think Valle team last year would have competed with Lamar but there is no way Valle this year would be able to compete against teams like Maplewood, Liberty and Lamar. I'm not basing this on what people say or sources, I'm basing this on what I have seen personally. Valle will not win state this year in Class 1, they lost too much.

This year has been kind of funny with games and it's still hard to decipher who is what in Semo. I think Sikeston is better than they are playing. Charleston is better than what people give them credit for. Caruthersville is better than they're 48-12 loss to Liberty, and Malden could be a huge factor in dethroning my Tigers at Districts, along with Charleston. Dexter will be better come district playoff, and very well could compete a lot better than they did the first game.

Should be an exciting year for Semo as a whole. More competitive games, which I personally will enjoy. Good Luck to SG against Maplewood. They definitely will need it. I've seen that team personally the last few years and I know what they bring to the table. I hope you guys knock them off.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Mon, Sep 3, 2012, at 8:10 PM

to me freddy wasn't a surprise. i've watched most of these kids since middle school. they were decent last year and returned basically everyone who made an impact. i was surprised that they whooped hillboro as bad as they did. if they are as good as i think they are they'll give park hills a good ole whooping.

-- Posted by TheDaddy on Mon, Sep 3, 2012, at 10:06 PM

Sorry, Bleed Green, Valle isn't near what they were last year. Good team that will probably win class 1, but would struggle to win class 2--esp with C-ville and Maplewood on this side of the state. As for SG averaging 245, not sure which d-line you're seeing, but they might average 225--definitely not 245 though. And Darrell Monroe is unlike anything SG has seen thus far...

-- Posted by kools&oe on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 9:58 AM

I agree, Portageville is quite improved. but there is no way they will challenge Valle or Thayer for that district.

-- Posted by Matt Duckworth on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 1:19 PM

Idk Matt duck worth guess we will just have to see

-- Posted by Semopost13 on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 1:59 PM

saw the jamboree sg was in. dline goes 200, 200, 270, and 230 starters average around 225, however, they can go bigger with a couple subs at 230 and one at 270. very good group who will give everyone they play problems. their lbs average around 200 also with a very good secondary. oline averages a solid 240 with 270 at both guards.

-- Posted by roll tide roll on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 2:46 PM

I was a little disappointed Friday night with the play of SG safety he got caught cheating if not for that Valle would of jad less then 120 yards of offense. Now the Monroe kid I saw a few highlights of him he is no were close to Elliot of JB hes a good RB but plays weak teams! I'm telling u I know football I know cville is descent but they will not run on SG and watching the play of your QB I understand why cville dosnt throw the ball. And I'm not worried about JB if SG were to play them today JB would win but as the season goes SG will get even better and that spells trouble for alot of teams!

-- Posted by Bleed Green on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 3:46 PM

Bleed Green.....your football expertise is mindboggling.

-- Posted by zachattack on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 5:09 PM

Zach I get on here just to ruffle people's feathers I know high school football and football in general! I told u last year week 3 of the season we would play JB In the quarters and we did I told u that we would beat your Rebels and we did twice! I told u at the beging of the year Weiler would be all state and he was! I know what it takes to beat teams around here I've watched these teams for years. Just because I give people crap doesn't mean I don't know what I'm talking about! I stood on I knew every play Park hills was running last year before they ran it ask Daddy he was there! I don't just follow SG I go to games on sat and watch films with certain people! IMO SG is way better then last year and that's saying a lot! Got a tough game this week but I like it when people count them out just like last year when everyone said SG would loose bad and they didn't!! Can't wait to see ya were that tshirt

-- Posted by Bleed Green on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 5:51 PM

I don't know football that well or even know what some of these abbrevations stand for but if Elliot of JB is heads and tails better than Darrell Monroe than he must be an absolute beast. Because Monroe is one of the best athletes I've seen in awhile, but I have never seen him play football, just basketball.

-- Posted by 6+4+3=2 on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 6:07 PM

Elliott is going to Ohio State. If Monroe continues to improve and gets exposure, he has the chance to go to a BCS school. Monroe's a best for sure.

-- Posted by kools&oe on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 8:54 PM

Bleed Green is accurate in a lot of his assessments. Elliot is a phenom. Monroe will play at next level however I'm going by what others are saying. JB line is much much better than JB so just how good Monroe is we may never know until he reaches that level. Freddy is better. Park Hills has more speed and better back and I believe a better line. I look for P. Hills to win if they don't go into the turnover mode that often hits PH.Jackson wins over Farmington. Valle clobbers SV.Maplewood and SG is too close to call, team with fewest turnovers.P'ville comes down to reality soon. Not sure who they play this week but it will be within 2 weeks.

BG - Thanks for the analysis.

I am just ruffling YOUR tail feathers.

I'm not buying into the SG (or Fredericktown) hype just yet. We'll definitely have a more REALISTIC idea of what SG is made of this week.

-- Posted by zachattack on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 9:30 PM

I did pick SG to beat Maplewood though.

-- Posted by zachattack on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 9:32 PM

same for freddy zach. :P

-- Posted by TheDaddy on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 9:32 PM

If Central should "go home" week 10, I will show up to Potosi, SG or Fredericktown in the next round . (Whichever team is still alive...or the highest seed.)

So....even though I will talk smack all season, I will still end up supporting the team that goes the farthest. Ya know...just to reppa' sent our area!

-- Posted by zachattack on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 9:46 PM

i'll go to every game i can! i'll be sitting right next to ya bro!

Portageville 3-0?

-- Posted by ReporterSteve on Wed, Sep 5, 2012, at 8:49 AM

Also, Monroe has to play both ways. I don't think Elliot plays both ways, I could be wrong.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Wed, Sep 5, 2012, at 2:26 PM

Cheese Monroe is good & I think he has a lot of potential but u seem to think its only one Monroe type in Missouri... Man I guarantee u he'll see 70% of major college fb players bigger, stronger & faster than he is.. Listen yes he is good but u guys are going to the extreme to say noboby else in the area or state that's better in wk 2 of his jr yr... I played college ball I was 6'1 219 ran 4.48 in 40 but when I arrived on campus I quickly found out that it's players bigger or smaller & stronger & just as fast, as I too were one of the better runners in smo area... Heck tiger Boyd was a beast in his day & around the area, class4 all state back but didn't really pan out at mizzou, but we must understand it doesn't get easier, it gets harder so I'll wait to put Monroe at bama... I'm not saying Monroe can't do it, but I'm saying kony ealy was a beast in hs & dominated on defense in hs, but he was a redshirt! I mean some thought he was big & strong enough to play right away but as I said earlier, it's tough at the next level... Btw our football in semo is really weak compared to other parts of state & region.. Just a fact!

-- Posted by He hate me on Wed, Sep 5, 2012, at 7:30 PM

He hate me, I am sure the reason Kony got the red shirt is because Missouri already had a strong DE in Aldon Smith. Ealy did not have the body to fit his frame. Monroe is already near his max weight for his position in what I think will be OLB or DE, sure he has some more muscle to put on but they can get that on pretty fast. One thing that coaches can not coach is athletic ability and this guy has it. William Moore from Hayti is a prime example of what pure athleticism can do for a guy. You put Monroe in a Class 5 or 6 school surrounded by a well balanced offense and the recruiters would be slobbering all over the place. Demographics and his small classification hurts him in the recruiting part of things but this kid is a stud.

-- Posted by wheresthebeef on Wed, Sep 5, 2012, at 7:49 PM

Elliot does play both ways.

-- Posted by hb1025 on Wed, Sep 5, 2012, at 8:26 PM

And that's my point cheese, those guys at the bigger schools most are already there as far as competition, drive & as far as ability, every big time player has it, some more than others... I watched Monroe play fb & bb & run track but he is not that fast cheese... William Moore was fast or faster than Monroe so bad comparison... Kony was an excellent athlete & fast for 6'5 guy... I'm not saying Monroe is not good but to say he maybe the best in state, is totally false & unknown... Scouts find talent & publications find talent, havnt seen his name yet on the radar as ' person to watch for' except semoball, not even mosports! Btw is elbie Fonda playing ball anywhere? He was a good one, small but good!

-- Posted by He hate me on Wed, Sep 5, 2012, at 8:54 PM

I never said there is only one Monroe type player in Missouri, but in Southeast Missouri, please tell me anther player on his level? I'm not even going to say he is one of the top 300 in the country, but this kid has the "IT" factor and in two years, he will be playing college ball. Never said he would be on Alabama either, you charleston people like to put words in people's mouth. Darrell is just not a football stud, he is also one of the best in Semo at basketball. Talent like that doesn't come around very often around these parts.

-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Wed, Sep 5, 2012, at 8:54 PM

As far as being under the radar the last SEMO player that I can remember being on a RIVALS top RBs for the state is Jimmy Jackson back in 2003.

I mentioned above about the classification hurting his attention along with demographics, the Bootheel has not produced any big name players since Moore, he is the only one I know that has been in the NFL from the general SEMO area.

cheese get on messenger
