One has to wonder why southeast Missouri football is so weak season after season?

Any thoughts?

It remains my opinion based on talking with people in the western part of the state that football flourishes in the Springfield area. Any thoughts why?

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Mon, Sep 3, 2012, at 10:27 PM

Class 4 - Sullivan ain't no joke.

-- Posted by zachattack on Mon, Sep 3, 2012, at 10:44 PM

It is also debateable if Sullivan is in southeast Missouri.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Mon, Sep 3, 2012, at 10:56 PM

I believe football is weak for two reasons.

1. It does not get the support from our schools that it does in other areas. I guess SEMO teams have more to worry about with poverty and such.

2. It does not have the same commitment from athletes that baseball and basketball do in SEMO. This could be a result of reason 1 however.

I think a big part of it is that so few schools in the SEMO area compete in football. South of Perryville, there are only 15 schools that have football. Now 16 with the addition of Kelly.

-- Posted by semohoops on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 8:04 AM

True. Prior to Kelly this year, I can't remember the last time a school in this area actually added a football program. There are several that are big enough to field a 1A but choses not to. Some schools could even use the co-op rule.

I don't think Sullivan being in southeast Missouri is debateable............... they're "not!"

Mosports Power Poll is more like a "Whose Hot Currently" and the AP puts a little "thought" in their polls.

Certain parts of the state are strong in certain sports. It's tradition and hard to change culture. I'm sure there are some SEMO area schools that don't want to add football because they know it takes away from basketball. It's hard for small town high schools to be good at both. It's hard to run "open gyms" in the fall when the basketball team is at football practice or the football coach doesn't want his players to get hurt playing basketball (which happens everywhere and is horse manure).

As far as being a "SEMO" team, to me if you are in Dist. 1 of any class (except class 5 and 6 which I'd add any team south of Festus and east of Rolla)with a few exceptions, you're a SEMO team.

Now with polls, I'm sorry, SEMO teams get no respect simply because in Class 4 and 3 the road to the dome has been going through two schools fairly consistently for years: Burroughs and MICDS. In Class 3 & 4, a quick look shows the only team from the SEMO area that in the last twenty years has more than one dome appearance is Ste Gen.

Respect is earned!

-- Posted by Bogey Man on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 12:10 PM

Agree there Bogey, when there are teams in Class 3 & 4 consistently going to the Dome we'll see more attention on SEMO football.

-- Posted by mojo3 on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 2:08 PM

Any thoughts on why football is so strong in Springfield area?

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 2:13 PM

just liten here dustin word. who l just says footballround here aint no good Bucko? you seems to have sprigfield on the brain don not you pal? i thinks foosball is just good here as it is in springfield Bucko.

-- Posted by bearcat1forall on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 2:33 PM

SG is semo and there #7

-- Posted by Bleed Green on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 3:48 PM

Dustin is obsessed with me and stalks me cause I'm in Springfield. and its because Springfield has 700,000 people in it and LOTS of opportunities for kids to get better. plus schools down here can afford to bring in big name coaches from other states. (that's just my thought) but why is semo leaps and bounds better than the rest of the state in basketball? i say its mostly luck... and Bleed Green, doesn't Stolzer have a say in the rankings?

-- Posted by TheDaddy on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 6:21 PM

No who In the world told u that!

-- Posted by Bleed Green on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 6:44 PM

I am not sure if Dustin is just trolling or actually asking serious questions. I thought you were like the volleyball and cheerleader guru am I right? Leave the football discussion up to trained professionals.

-- Posted by wheresthebeef on Tue, Sep 4, 2012, at 7:02 PM

i just knew stolzer had a say in the all state team so i didnt know. :-/

wheresthebeef

I've never attended a cheerleading competition in my life.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Wed, Sep 5, 2012, at 1:57 AM

bearcat1forall

According to these rankings football is stronger in the Springfield region.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Wed, Sep 5, 2012, at 1:59 AM

Thoughts on if the southeast Missouri region is underrepresented in the rankings or if the rankings are accurate?

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Wed, Sep 5, 2012, at 3:32 AM

That may be true Dustin but in years past you have had small stories about local teams cheerleaders and most of the time have a picture with their names and such.

-- Posted by wheresthebeef on Wed, Sep 5, 2012, at 3:08 PM

Other part of the states media tries more to get their teams on? I'm not saying we don't I just throwing out possibilities. Only rankings that matter to me are they ones after week 15. The rest mean about as much as the paper I wipe my butt with
