9/8/2012 TIGERS 34 Charleston 12

A rainy, windy and "lightningy" Friday night at Charleston forced officials to reschedule the 3rd game of the season to a beautiful, sunny "fallish" afternoon...an absolutely perfect day for football. It looked like the two teams were evenly matched for a half, but the Tigers found another gear (even with Tiger star Darrell Monroe on the sideline) in the 2nd half, as the Tigers pulled away from the Blue Jays, winning 34-12.

My past summaries have basically given a "play-by-play", but tonight I will try a little different approach.

The Tigers, sporting their white jerseys and red pants would kick off to the Jays, clad in all blue with white helmets. A nice return set up the Jays at their own 49 yardline. The Jays would cover the 51 yards in 8 plays, with the drive kickstarted by a 23 yard run on the 1st play of scrimmage by the Jays QB, Mike Hull. Hull also connected with Delfinko Bogan on a pass play covering 25 yards. Deontrail Winston got the TD for the Jays on a 1 yard run. The Tigers Eric Villegas foiled the 2-point attempt, but the Jays had the early lead, 0-6 with 8:39 remaining in the 1st quarter.

The Tigers would answer the bell, with a drive of their own, covering 65 yards in 8 plays. The big play of the drive was a Darrell Monroe run for 18 on 3rd and 4...but it was also costly as Monroe suffered a bad bruise to his lower leg which would hobble him for the rest of the half, and ultimately cause him to not play in the 2nd half. The TD came on a beautiful pass and catch, Tyler Grissom to Hunter Dickey, with Dickey taking it in for the 29 yard TD. The PAT failed, and the score was knotted at 6-6, with 4:49 left in the 1st.

The two teams quickly traded possessions, and the 1st quarter ended 6-6.

The Jays 1st possession of the 2nd quarter was interrupted...on an interception by the Tigers' Myron Woods. Woods made a nice return, only to have the return (not the INT) negated by a Tiger block in the back penalty. The Tigers would not capitalize on the turnover due to a big loss on 1st down and then a Tiger holding penalty on 2nd down. The Tigers were then forced to punt.

The Jays offense followed the lead of the Tigers...going backwards! A loss of 5 on 1st down, a holding penalty, and then Hull was dropped for a loss of 10 by the Tigers' Villegas and Kenneth Pittman. A short Jays punt gave the Tigers the ball on the Jays 45 yardline.

On 1st down, the Tiger offensive line opened a gaping hole which Darrell Monroe hopped through, and although limping badly, Monroe outran the Jays defenders to the endzone. Monroe powered his was in for the 2point conversion, giving the Tigers the 14-6 lead with 6:31 remaining in the half.

The Jays responded to the Tiger score on their next series, covering 80 yards in 7 plays. Two big runs (23 and 30 yards) by Robert Bogan, set up his 14 yard TD run, which saw Bogan simply run through several Tiger tackle attempts. The 2point pass was incomplete, but the Jays cut the Tigers lead to 14-12 with 2:52 remaining in the half.

The two teams again traded possessions, with the only highlight being a "lowlight" for the Tigers as Monroe had a 2 yard carry by hopping on one leg until he was flipped by a Jays tackler. Darrell was able to hobble off of the field...and he would not return. Grissom had a nice 25 yard carry on the last play of the half...perhaps giving the Tigers a little momentum heading into the 2nd half, clinging to the 14-12 lead.

The Tigers would receive the 2nd half kickoff, and start from their own 43. A nice, 11 play drive would allow the Tigers to cover the 57 yards. Dickey had a 13 yard reception. Hunter Trevathan stepped in for Monroe and broke off a nice 17 yard run. Grissom had a 12 yard run. Jeremy Grant had a run of 8 yards. Grissom would get the Tiger TD from 1 yard out. Steve Rodgers boomed the PAT, and the Tigers increased their lead to 21-12 with 6:57 remaining in the 3rd quarter.

The Tiger defense stiffened on the next Jays drive. Tyler Quertermous and Colt Callens combined to stop Bogan for a loss of 4. Woods had a nice tackle on 2nd down, and then ended the Jays drive with his 2nd interception of the day. Woods again had a great return which would also again be negated by a penalty with which most Tiger fans strongly disagreed, a block in the back.

Again the Tigers failed to make good on the INT, as the Tigers fumbled the ball right back to the Jays on 2nd down.

The Tigers' Callens dropped Hull for a loss of 8 on 1st down. Tiger Joey Middleton also had a TFL (tackle for loss) or BLT (behind line tackle). Middleton and Quertermous combined for another TFL/BLT forcing the Jays to punt.

The Tiger offense sputtered a little to end the 3rd quarter...a holding penalty, and Grissom being sacked for a loss of 7. The 4th quarter began with an incomplete Tiger pass, followed by a Tiger punt.

The Jays would not muster a first down, and on 3rd and 10 Hull was sacked by Tiger Kendall Pittman for a loss of 10, forcing the Jays to punt.

The Tigers would then mount an 8 play 52 yard scoring drive. Grissom carried for 7. Tiger Rodrick Jones busted an 18 yard run. Grissom had 2 additional 10 yard runs, and ultimately found the endzone from 3 yards out. Rodgers added the PAT, giving the Tigers a 28-12 lead with 5:30 remaining in the game.

The Tiger defense stuffed the Jays, with Kendall Pittman again catching Hull behind the line for a loss of 5. The Jays punt attempt went badly as the snap was fumbled, giving the Tigers the ball on the Jays 2 yardline.

Tiger QB Peyton Faulkner then powered his way into the endzone for his first varsity Tiger TD! The PAT failed, but the Tigers had put the game away, 34-12 with just 3:03 remaining in the game.

The Jays would quickly fumble the ball back to the Tigers, with Hunter Dickey recovering for the Tigers.

Jeremy Grant had a nice run of 28 yards, following a nice Thomas Young block. Daniel Fugate also had a couple of nice carries. The teams then quickly exchanged fumbles, and the game would end with Faulkner taking a knee on the Jays 7 yardline.

I know the question on every Tiger fan's (and opponents') mind is, "How is Monroe"? Well, honestly I don't know. He is a tough kid, but he obviously couldn't go today due to the leg injury. However, I really think that he will be fine, and I am sure the Tiger coaching staff will be monitoring his progress closely.

Great seeing Tiger Malik Monroe on the sideline cheering on his teammates...just 2 days after having surgery to place 2 plates and 14 screws in his arm. Gotta love Malik!

Let's talk a little about the Tiger defense. They looked impressive again today...although we still need to improve our tackling. The "Nuks"...a/k/a the Pittmans, Kendall and Kenneth both had impressive games today. Kenneth had 8 tackles and 3 assists. Kendall had 5 tackles and 2 big sacks. Other Tiger defenders having a really good day: Tyler Quertermous had 4 tackles and 3 assists; Joey Middleton 4 tackles and 2 assists; Colt Callens 5 tackles and 1 assist; Hunter Dickey 4 tackles and 3 assists; Eric Villegas 6 tackles and 1 TFL; and finally Myron Woods with 2 tackles and 1 assist...oh, and 2 more INTs! Adding to the 2 he had last week against Malden.

The Tigers' win improves their record to 2-1. The Blue Jays drop to 1-2.

The Tigers will be back to the friendly confines of Hopke Field Friday night to face the Dexter Bearcats, where Tigers hope to avenge their only regular season loss from the 2011 season.

GO TIGERS GO!!!

  • I meant to add this to the beginning of my summary.

Let me share a little information with you. I am not a professional journalist (as if that isn't obvious), just a Tiger fan who spends a lot of time taking notes at games and typing late at night. I have been posting my Tiger-biased summaries over on mosports for 9 seasons. When I learned about semoball, I started posting my comments here, too. In the past, I have been humbled by many kind comments, which I sincerely appreciated. Many from opposing team fans! However, this year it seems that many read my summary and then wish to "nit-pick" or argue with my summary about such mundane things as what constitutes a "long drive" to a game, whether I understand the coin toss, etc. Feel free to do so if you wish. You see, I post these summaries for our kids, their parents and other Tiger fans, all of whom still seem to enjoy them. I choose to post them here for all of you, too. I hope that you enjoy my summary each week.

Thanks for the summary judge, I know you are one of the most loyal Tiger fans there are and we do appreciate these. I know you don't bicker on here about what goes on in the game and that is a trait I wished I had. I speak my mind and bring things up but I care about every one of the guys on the field wish them the best the rest of the season.
