Preach,

Just for you I went deep into the theory for calculating the playoff seeding points. Remember it's been 20+ years since I took Calculus and Differential Equations in college so some of the symbols may be off. I hope a math teacher on this site doesn't criticize me too much! I think I understand it now:

Basically it is this:

{(W-L)/N} + (Clp/N) + (Sc ave) + (DIFF/N) = Ranking Points

Where:

N = Number Games Played by your team

W-L = Total Win/Loss points as defined below

Clp = Up Class Point Bonus as defined below

Sc ave = Strength of schedule points as calculated below

And DIFF is the point differential average as defined below

W-L is given as:

(W-L) = (20 *W) + (10*L) + (15*OL)

Where: W is each WIN by your team, L is a LOSS, and OL is Overtime LOSS

Clp is given as:

Clp = SUM(x->N){C1x -- C2 [for C1xN) {20 Wx+10Lx}] -- (20W + 10L)}/ {[SUM(x-N)(Wx+Lx)]-N}

Wx is WINS by your opponent. Lx is losses by your opponent.

And finally DIFF is given as:

DIFF = SUM(x->N)[ -13>(Y -- V)x< 13]

Where Y is YOUR final score for each game and V is your opponents score. The differential has a min/max of +/- 13.

Add them all together and pray for a miracle and you get the ranking score!

Thanks Mojo3 for straightening me out on that. It's all perfectly clear to me now! LOL.

clear as mud for me... not too good on that whole mathicifation crap.

Everything is real easy until you start messing with the strength of schedule numbers, thats the only thing I still having trouble wrapping my pea sized brain around

I don't understand why it's so complicated. What was wrong with the way they had done it the previous two years (or however long it was)? This way seems as much, or more, complicated than the BCS. And we all know how well the BCS works every year!

I realize that the points are just used for seedings, but if it is "just for seedings"....why make it so complicated? You still have to win to keep going. Just seems convuluted to me.

Does anyone know how MSHSAA is going to score Portageville and their essential open week? Any penalization or just only use there point total after 8 weeks?

The BCS has worked just fine for us SEC fans for the past six years, thank you very much.

i would have personally liked to see my OSU cowboys play bama last year... would have been a better game than LSU handed them.

NeverWasBeen, since the points you get in the end are a per game average, I don't think playing an 8 game schedule hurts that much. Your strength of schedule bonus is hurt if OTHER teams play a short schedule...

Crap, just looking at my post, it's TOTALLY wrong!!! Nevermind.

And just when I thought I finally had it figured out! Oh well...

Seriously, I was trying to calculate some points to see if they work out and I totally left out the section on the class-up bonus calc. BTW, I did the FredMo points at lunch and came up with 45.2 points, not the 47+ listed by MSHSAA.

May try a few other schools this evening.

Well, did both FredMo and PHC this evening. I think MSHSAA is adding in your complete schedule into the calculation, not just the teams you've played. I've tried it a couple ways and come up with numbers close to what they have published when I do that. However, I still come up exactly two points short on each school. If I was a coach I'd want a good explanation of how these seedings are set if there's anything close at the end of the year, I can't figure out why I'm getting the error.
