10/12/12 TIGERS 13 Hayti 6

A beautiful, albeit misty, night in Hayti for the 2012 Battle of the Bootheel between our Caruthersville Tigers and the Hayti Indians. As the old saying goes, "you can throw the record books out the window" in this much anticipated rivalry game. The Tigers were very fortunate to hang on to the victory this year, winning 13-6, and improving their overall record in the series to 53-20-3.

The Tigers, wearing their white jerseys and red pants would kick off to the Indians, clad in gold and black jerseys and black pants. The Indians would go backwards on their first drive, losing 20 yards on a bad snap...a little foreshadowing for what would occur later. On third and long, Tiger defensive lineman Jay Stricklin almost had his dream come true...he almost picked off a screen pass, and had he intercepted he likely would have scored! The Indians punted, giving the Tigers excellent field position at the Hayti 29.

Tiger Jamal Johnson ran for 9 yards to the Hayti 20 on 1st down. On second and 1, the Tigers fumbled, and the Indians recovered at their own 22.

The Tiger defense stopped the Indian for a loss of 1 on 1st down. 2nd and 3rd downs were both incompletions, and the Indians again punted, to the Tigers 47 yardline.

Tiger Darrell Monroe carried for 3 yards on 1st down. Tyler Grissom ran for 3 on 2nd down. Monroe was stopped at the line of scrimmage on 3rd down, forcing the Tigers to punt on 4th down, to the Hayti 20.

The Indians mounted an 80 yard drive in 9 plays. The big plays on the drive were: an 11 yard pass from Austin Neisler to Maurion Newbill on 3rd and 9, keeping the drive alive; carries by Demetrius Luster for 11 yards and then a big 45 yard run; and Karnard Humes scoring on a 5 yard run. The score came with 3:23 remaining in the 1st quarter. The 2point pass play was incomplete, but the Indian gained the lead,

0-6.

The Tigers would respond on their very next drive. Starting at their own 23, the Tigers used 6 plays to cover the 77 yards. Myron Woods ran for 13. Grissom hit Hunter Dickey with a beautiful 46 yard pass. Grissom ran for 13. Monroe ran for 3. Grissom then powered his way into the endzone from the 2 yardline, with 1:30 remaining in the 1st quarter. Steve Rodgers booted the PAT. TIGERS 7 Hayti 6

The Indian returned the kick to their own 31. Luster carried for 1 yard. Newbill caught a 10 yard pass. But from that point, the Tiger defense gained momentum and yards. Luster was dropped for a loss of 5 on a huge hit by Tiger Joey Middleton. Neisler was sacked by Monroe for a loss of 11. Luster was stopped for a loss of 2 by Tiger Kendall Pittman. On 4th and 28 from their own 24, disaster would strike for Hayti (remember the foreshadowing I mentioned earlier) as the snap sailed over the punters head, the ball squirted around in the endzone before finally being recovered by the Tigers Kenneth Pittman for a Tiger touchdown. The PAT was blocked, but with 10:33 remaining in the 1st half, the Tigers padded their lead to 13-6. Little did everyone know...that would be the end of the scoring on the night.

The Indians appeared poised to tie the game or regain the lead on their next drive. Humes had the big play for the Indians with a 40 yard pass reception. Tigers Dickey and Middleton combined for a sack of Neisler for an 8 yard loss on the next play. The Indians moved the ball to the Tiger 9 yardline, and had the ball 1st and goal, but the Tiger defense stopped Luster for no gain on 1st down. The Indians went to the air on 2nd, 3rd and 4th downs, each pass being incomplete, as Tiger fans breathed a sigh of relief.

The Indians stuffed the Tigers on 3 consecutive plays, forcing the Tigers to punt to the Tigers' 45. Luster carried for 2 yards. Then, Luster caught a pass and raced to the Tigers' 11. Humes carried for 2, to the 9 yardline. The Tigers then forced a fumble, which was recovered by Tiger Tyler Quertermous at the 10.

Monroe carried for 27 yards. Dickey carried for 1. The scoreboard and clock malfunctioned, so the referees were forced to keep the time on a watch on the field. Myron Woods caught a pass for 12 yards taking the ball to midfield, but the Tiger drive would end when a Grissom pass was intercepted at the Indians 16 yardline. The Indians would run 2 plays before the half came to a surprising end, due to the clock still having time remaining, but no time remained on the referee's watch.

As there was no scoring in the 2nd half, I will make this brief. Both teams threatened to score on several occasions. The Indians had a 4th and 1 at the Tiger 11, but threw an incomplete pass. The Tigers got the ball to the Indian 12, but a high snap caused a big loss.

Big plays in the 2nd half for the Tigers: Jamal Johnson with an interception; Joey Middleton with a 14 yard sack; Tyler Quertermous with a 5 yard tackle for loss; Johnson with an 8 yard tackle for loss; and finally Myron Woods with an interception to end any chances for the Indians.

The win pushes the Tigers record to 6-1. The Tigers will be back to the friendly confines of Hopke Field Friday night to host a very tough Class 3 St. Genevieve Dragons team. To be brutally honest, if the Tigers don't play a whole lot better than they did tonight, it could be a long night for the Tigers. Hopefully, the Tigers will have a great week of practice, get back an injured player or two, and will be ready to defend their home turf.

GO TIGERS GO!!!

  • Why didn't Karnard Humes play QB for Hayti tonight?

  • From what I hear the coach moved him to receiver because of attitude problems. The Neisler kid seemed to do well from what I read.

  • Sadly, this has been Hayti's problem all season long it seems to me. A lack of discipline which has resulted in bad attitudes, too many penalties, and too many turnovers.
