....and a young man who is WELL deserving that worked HARD for 4 years of high school to prove it. We (C'ville) are very proud of Darrell and all of his accomplishments.

Great choice; no matter what the future holds for for D.M., no one can take this honor away!

it was a very special evening at the black river coliseum in poplar bluff. a record crowd of over 300 people attended the banquet which culminated with the coveted carr trophy going to c'ville's darrell monroe. he is a very deserving winner amongst a group of finalists including cape central's mikey jones, jackson's dante vandeven, and chaffee's peyton montgomery. jacob sliger of pb won the derland moore award as the best defensive player in the conference. brian rosener has a complete rundown of the evening's winners in his blog.

First time I can remember in a very long time a NMCC player wasn't listed somewhere on offense. Also can't believe Norman didn't get mentioned somewhere for coaching.
-- Posted by MayorEagle on Thu, Dec 5, 2013, at 5:43 AM
the coach of the year in the north conference went to jackson's brent eckley as the indians won the conference. it usually works out that way where the coach of the the team that wins the conf wins the coach of the year. coach norman was also deserving though, especially with the run the tigers went on to end the season.

First off congratulations to Monroe. Had a great career at C'ville. Unfortunate what happened this year with the injuries. But going off stats it is hard to say that Vandeven or Jones shouldn't have gotten the Carr award. I thought Monroe was more deserving last year. So is the Carr Trophy a career award or a season award?
-- Posted by NewTigerFan on Thu, Dec 5, 2013, at 8:13 AM
The Carr Trophy goes to the best player in SEMO. They do not go by just the stats of the current season. Nothing against Vandeven or Jones but the best player won this year. Vandeven or Young should be the front runner's next year.

Remember the Coach of the Year awards are voted on by the Coaches. It should also be noted that the vote was held the Monday after the last regular season game, before the Tigers made their incredible run to the Semi's. My bet is Nathan will have need an entire room to hold all his awards before he hangs up his Coaching shingle. Monroe could have had 3,000 yards but was often pulled from games rather than run up the score. Dante & Mikey had tremendous years but there can be only one winner. I will not engage in a blog argument here but rather spend my time applauding these great kids and the year they had that we will not forget for a very long time to come. Bless you boys.

Although all four young men were deserving i do believe the Carr Trophy Committee got it right, congratulations Darrell. Also I got to give a shoutout to 3 Bearcats for their first team selections Brad Wick,Trevor Waldner and DJ Dowdy Great job!!!

Darrell Monroe Congrats to a heck of an athlete. Chaffee's Peyton Montgomery What a show! Ataboy to you both.

CatDad, it was Brandon Wick who was all-conference for Dexter. Brad is his older brother who graduated last year.

May be a discussion on a different thread, but any word on where Monroe will play at the next level?

Are you kidding me? How is it possible that Moore won this award over Mikey Jones? At the very least, the numbers do not lie:
Moore:
He ran for 1,430 yards, averaging 11 yards per carry and scoring 20 touchdowns. He also caught 12 passes for 433 yards and five scores while returning three kicks for 99 yards.
Jones:
Jones led a Tiger team that advanced to the Class 4 state semifinals, rushing for 2,045 yards and 25 touchdowns. He won the North's Scoring Award with 27 touchdowns and 172 points.
600+ more yards rushing, 5 more rushing TD's (2 more overall), and all this done in the SEMO North, where 4 of the top 10 teams in SE Missouri play, and against a more difficult schedule than anyone else in SE Missouri. Don't get me wrong, both players had very good years, and both deserve all the accolades they receive. But IMO Jones season by far was a better one than Moore's, and one that is more deserving of the Carr trophy, which is supposed to be awarded to the player with the most outstanding season. Once again, the PB Letter Club got it wrong in the SEMO Conference. But it's not the first time that this has happened, and I am sure it won't be the last. Perhaps it is time for the coaches to select the Carr trophy winner?
-- Posted by OldBallCoach on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 9:16 AM
I wasn't aware Moore was a finalist for the award. A guy named Monroe was..
Quick question, was Jones just as dominate on defense as he was on offense?
-- Posted by Cheesehead. on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 10:30 AM
Mikey Jones may have played in a "tougher conference, bigger class" or whatever but he carried the ball about 25 times per game. He had a BIGGER offensive line blocking for him. You put Darrell behind Capes line give him the ball 20+ times a game he would have had 2500 yards or better. Caruthersville had a good backup RB this year and a good QB that also helped carry the football. IMO Vandeven was more deserving than Jones if Darrell didn't get it. His stats were more impressive to me. Any of the 3 could have won it and all have been deserving but I think the award went to the BEST football player in SEMO.
Darrell MISSED 3 games this year and in 3 of the games he did play he could have had alot more yardage but was removed from the games early.
Kennett 6 for 162
Hayti 4 for 128
Dexter 13 for 263
Albeit none of the teams I listed are stud teams or defenses but you want to throw yardage and TD's as a caliber of judging a player no matter who it's against he could have had alot more yardage and TD's.
-- Posted by wheresthebeef on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 10:52 AM
My mistake. I meant Monroe. The old eyes play tricks on the OldBallCoach sometimes online...
However, you can't really use could haves, or might haves, to help determine things can you? If you want to use the defensive play as another measure then that may have beenm the determining factor.
-- Posted by OldBallCoach on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 11:41 AM
Monroe dominated on both sides of the ball. Jones did not dominate on defense. IMHO, the best player in SEMO won.

-- Posted by waveman on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 12:09 PM
Monroe was the best player in southeast Missouri by leaps and bounds. He had an average line at best and still put up the numbers he did. Plus dominated on defense. Jones was great, but nothing like Monroe. Sorry.
-- Posted by Perrywinkle on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 12:29 PM
Leaps and bounds? Really? No way. I don't believe Monroe's year was as good as Jones', or even Vandeven's year, all things considered. I believe both Jones and Vandeven accomplished as much and in some cases, more.
Your agrument of the fact that you believe Monroe had "an average line at best," also doesn't hold water. If that agrument was a good one, then Sam Bradford would have been up for MVP as opposed to the likes of Adrian Peterson, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, etc., because his OL was average at best. Individual awards in a team sport are always difficult to determine and award, due to this very dilemma. Was it the player by himself, or did he succeed because of his team? I just think that Jones' year, and even Vandeven's year, were better. Doesn't mean Monroe is not a great player, and if I had a team I would want him on it. But, I just thought the other two had better seasons overall.
-- Posted by OldBallCoach on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 1:01 PM
If you take the kid from cape off the team they'd still be pretty good, you take monroe off the team and that's a huge factor on both sides of the ball, I'd say the qb from Jackson was more valuable to his teams success then Jones. That's how I think about it, the name of it says it all the most valuable player. But a 2000 yard plus rushing season is very impressive to say the least.
Do you think this cape team was better then the sikeston teams from a few years ago that made the semi finals?
-- Posted by formerposterchild on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 1:21 PM
I wouldn't say Monroe had an average line. I was thinking he had 1 of the top 3 or 4 lines in southeast Missouri . Preach or cheesehead am I wrong about that ? But I still think they got it right,it was Monroe's year.
-- Posted by CatDad on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 3:22 PM
IDK cat, as far as size goes we had one of the smallest lines in SEMO..minus Stricklin we didn't have much size at all. They knew their assignments and know how to open holes but I figure any team with a good size athletic line should be able to do the same right? Cville has been outsized most of the year but still came up with ways to win games. Malik Monroe, Grant Marshall and Treyvonne Leatherwood were all first year starters for the varsity squad. Stricklin, Middleton and Quertermous were are only starters returning but Quertermous was out for about 5 games at the end of the year.
-- Posted by wheresthebeef on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 3:40 PM
Landon Strickland and Malik Monroe are big boys and for a Class 2 school, I thought their OL this year was bigger and better than most teams Dexter faced this year. In fact, I would say only Park Hills Central had a better OL than Caruthersville. I wouldn't label them average at all. Consider that when Monroe was out with an injury, they didn't have much of a drop-off when Jones carried the ball. That's a testament to their OL play.
-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 3:50 PM
I agree with you preach,I remember thinking after the park hills game I would like to see cauthersville play them just to watch the o-lines. At cauthersville of course cause its much closer!!
-- Posted by CatDad on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 3:59 PM
Monroe is without question the best football player in southeast Missouri. There are other talented players, but he is special. Nobody makes the impact he does on the football field. He is a threat on every play offensively and defensively.
-- Posted by indianchief on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 5:27 PM
Why hasn't anyone answered the question of were Monroe might be playing next year? I would think some d1 schools would be looking hard at him with his size and speed!
-- Posted by Ftballrules on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 7:20 PM
Jones maybe carried it more than 25 times maybe twice this year. Cape Centrals back up back had about 1,000 yards as well with there quarterback throwing for about 1,800 yards. You can't say that Mikey was getting the ball 25+ times every game. He did play defense towards the beginning of the year but wasn't very good. They decided to put all of his focus on offense. Monroe is a great player from the games/highlights I've seen, but I just think Mikey and Dante had a better year. Monroe is probably the best player, I just think Mikey and Dante got robbed.
-- Posted by CTFan on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 10:02 PM
CTFan, you undermined your own argument when you admitted Jones "wasn't very good" at defense. Vandeven didn't play defense at all. Monroe, on the other hand, was a dominant player on both offense and defense. How then can you argue that Jones and Vandeven got robbed?
-- Posted by Preacher Man Fan on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 10:37 PM
Peyton Montgomery keep coming, keep coming yeah> He gone
-- Posted by TheQ on Fri, Dec 6, 2013, at 11:46 PM
I think it went to the right guy. Mikey Jones obviously finished the season incredibly strong. I just saw him the one time against Sikeston when he rushed for 88 yards on 19 carries and no touchdowns. Very solid effort against a very stout defense but I didn't leave the stadium thinking that was the best player I've seen this season. That thought went to Jackson's Vandeven, but him being a junior and the fact that Monroe was such a high profile player that had a huge season made this the right call. Not a no-brainer, but the right call. Don't forget that Malden had a 2,000-plus yard rusher too that broke McCoy's records (2012 Carr Trophy winner) last year. And the Carr Trophy traditionally goes to the best PLAYER. Not the biggest stats. Sikeston's Justin Robinson rushed for 2,000 plus yards and was rarely used on defense in 1999 but as good as he was on offense, he didn't win the award.
-- Posted by semohoops on Sat, Dec 7, 2013, at 12:42 AM
It's funny to say, "He could have, or would have" in the game of football. He didn't. It's not like Jones played every snap of every game. He didn't. He wasn't even the featured back until week 4 vs. Jackson where he had 235yds 1TD rushing and a Rec TD (Markel Smith had 190 on 40 rushes against the indians the first game they played and only 97 yds on 29 carries 0TDs). He missed a 4th qrt of st charles west game and the Bluff game due to injury. Didn't play after the first qrt vs. Farmington the first time they played. And actually had 104 yds vs. Sikeston and yes he didn't score but got them to the goal line and then they QB sneaked. (which they did 6 other times during the year) And during the biggest game of their carriers at that time he went off for 22 Carries 347 yds 4 td vs Hillsboro in the district championship. And didn't play in the 4th quarter. So to say it was an obvious choice for Monroe is a little silly.
-- Posted by NewTigerFan on Sat, Dec 7, 2013, at 12:30 PM
Yeah I agreed with the Carr pick in 1999, just stating another example of a big yard season that didn't win. But to be fair, Smith was surrounded by tremendous players and simply better talent that you had to gameplan for, whereas Robinson was the ONLY option and you knew he was getting the ball every single snap and teams still couldn't stop him. So there are always two ways of looking at it. And the games I watched Smith rarely came out, not even in blowouts until just a few minutes to go.
-- Posted by semohoops on Sat, Dec 7, 2013, at 12:47 PM
The bottom line is Mikey Jones had a great year just like many other players have had over the years but you can only choose one Carr Trophy winner. When it's all said and done a group of officials vote on who they feel is the "best player" and typically it goes to a player that impacts both sides of the ball on a team that has a lot of success.
-- Posted by semohoops on Sat, Dec 7, 2013, at 12:49 PM
Kinda like Stevenson in 2010 with over 2,200 yards, and everyone knew he was getting the ball. And was a big force on defense. And he didn't win. Stats don't always win you the award for sure.

JC somewhere.
-- Posted by NewTigerFan on Sat, Dec 7, 2013, at 8:08 PM
Exactly BuckMajor. Stevenson was a great player with huge stats, but he played on an average team. A very similar circumstance to the Robinson situation in 1999. The award has typically gone to a player on a really good team. Based on past history, that's why I agreed that Smith deserved it over Robinson in 1999 just like Lewis winning over Stevenson in 2010.
Just about every single year I think they have gotten this award right. A couple times I think they missed it was when Monroe Hicks from Cape didn't win and when Cape's Frank McGinty won it over Sikeston's Brandon Barnes in 1998. I disagreed in those instances. But other than that, they get it right most of the time.
