High School Volleyball Forum: 2010 Volleyball Predictions

Posted by drawmules2 on Sat, Jul 31, 2010, at 1:43 AM:

Lesterville, Scott City and Notre Dame advanced to the state final four last season.

Lesterville and Scott City won the state title in their respective classes.

Any thoughts on which teams will have the best chance to play volleyball in the final four at the lovely Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City this season?

I have put together a list of favorites for Class 1 and Class 2.

Class 1: Bernie, Leopold, Lesterville

Class 2: Bloomfield, Scott City

Class 3: Notre Dame

Feel free to add your own favorites.

What will happen this season volleyball fans?

  • I added Notre Dame in Class 3. I'm not sure they are the favorite in Class 3. But they are definitely the favorite in Southeast Missouri. Does anyone know what DeSoto has coming back this season?

  • I also put together a list of sleeper teams. Here are the sleepers heading into this season:

Class 1: Bell City, Advance, Zalma

    Class 2: Puxico

    Class 3: Dexter, Perryville

  • I think Lesterville got beat by someone at the Licking camp from in the SEMO region. Don't remember who though.

  • Any thought on Leopold's volleyball team this year?

-- Posted by sportsaholic on Mon, Aug 2, 2010, at 10:39 PM
  • I think Leopold will be fine. I have heard maybe a rebuilding year and maybe short on defense but I still think they will be OK. The stage was set last year for them when Lesterville beat them. Who knows what this year will bring. They will have a new setter and new defensive specialist but many returning hitters.

  • I thought that ND lost heavily to graduation? Maybe I am thinking of basetball and baseball, and soccer, and so on..... For the ND haters this season, get your licks in, I think they are likely to have a much less dominant season in most sports. Still solid by most standards but not dominant at all.

Tough to beat a school in which everyone but the boys basketball team sent someone to the state tournament.

I'm stoked about actually calling ND volleyball AND softball games this year. A Final Four AND a state champion team? Should be fun times on Route K this fall.

  • I don't know about Puxico Varsity, but their JV went 27-2 in summer league...

-- Posted by dancediva on Thu, Aug 5, 2010, at 1:27 PM
  • I think it should be an exciting season, with some even competition, which I love. At the end of 2009, Advance was playing some awfully good volleyball. I know they lost a couple of talented players to graduation, especially Sara Mace, but they have a lot of potential with Liza Gray. They have height from Nikki Cantrell and Haley Gifford. Zalma returns the whole team, which is an opportunity very few high school teams get, a chance to continue to grow as a team without shuffle. Bell City and Leopold always run a good program, even in re-building years, they are strong. Official practice starts Monday...let the games begin..we're ready.

I've missed you. I have been looking for you on the website for months. I believe your analysis of the teams is accurate.

Leopold and Lesterville may be the early season favorites.

However, I anticipate Advance and Zalma will be very competitive.

I believe the winner of a Class 1 sectional game between Bernie and Leopold will advance to state this season.

However, it is really early. Nobody has even won districts yet. The field is more balanced this season. Instead of two or three really great teams we have about six "good" teams. Zalma, Advance, Bernie, Leopold, Lesterville and Bell City should all be in contention at the end of the season.

I definitely have Puxico on my radar screen. The question for me righ now is . . . . Can anyone beat Bloomfield in Class 2?

  • I'm curious what Jackson, Perryville, St. Vincent and Notre Dame have coming back. Does anyone know the records of the junior varsity teams at these schools last season? How did these teams perform in summer camps?

    -- Posted by drawmules2 on Sat, Aug 7, 2010, at 2:30 AM
  • Scott City defeated Notre Dame to win the six-team tournament bracket at the Perryville Varsity Shoot-Out last month. They were in a bracket with Bloomfield, Notre Dame, Perryville, St. Vincent and Jackson.

There was also an eight-team tournament bracket in the Perryville Shoot-Out, which Zalma won over Advance. The eight-team bracket consisted of Zalma, Advance, Meadow Heights, Perryville, Sikeston, Cape Central, Hillsboro and Bayless of St. Louis.

Drawmules, I know that Perryville and Jackson both had JV teams entered in the Perryville JV Shoot-Out which was held the day after the varsity division. I know that Perryville's JV team went undefeated (6-0) in pool play and Jackson's JV finished fourth (2-4) in that same pool; Scott City's JV finished second (2-4) and Fredericktown finished third (2-4). In the other pool of the JV tournament, Poplar Bluff finished first (5-1), Zalma finished second (4-2), Advance finished third (3-3) and Perryville Freshmen finished fourth (0-6).

I know these games were just "summer league," but hope this assists you in your analysis.

  • Good info Kitty Purry.

    -- Posted by drawmules2 on Sat, Aug 7, 2010, at 12:17 PM
  • I'm surprised no one is mentioning Scott City. They will have at least 2 of the best players in the area on their team with a good supporting cast. Winning breeds winning, and they have won a lot.

    -- Posted by joefrank78 on Sat, Aug 7, 2010, at 9:15 PM
  • joefrank78

In the original forum post I list Scott City as a favorite in Class 2.

    -- Posted by drawmules2 on Sat, Aug 7, 2010, at 9:25 PM
  • No one after the original post. My bad. I should have said "Why aren't more people talking about Scott City?"

    -- Posted by joefrank78 on Sun, Aug 8, 2010, at 8:27 PM
  • Scott City runs a program 'bout like Bell City and Leopold..even when they're down..they are hard to handle. They seem to grow tall athletic girls there and like joefrank78 mentions..winning breeds winning..glad we only have to play them once a regular season!!

  • Does anyone know when they will start posting schedules? Many of the schools start this week and the season usually starts around the end of August or 1st of september. I think the woodland Tournament starts the week of August 30 this year. Does anyone know yet who will be in it?

-- Posted by deervalley on Mon, Aug 9, 2010, at 3:52 PM
  • Drawmules2, don't forget that they are redoing the district and sectional assignments this year. According to MSHSAA, the new district assignments are set to be out August 21.

-- Posted by Kitty Purry on Mon, Aug 9, 2010, at 4:08 PM
  • Deervalley, I think the same teams that were in the Woodland Tournament last year will be in it this year: Leopold, Advance, Zalma, Woodland, Meadow Heights, Saxony Lutheran, Oak Ridge and Greenville. If I find out differently, I'll revise my post and let you know.

-- Posted by Kitty Purry on Mon, Aug 9, 2010, at 4:12 PM
  • Schedules are starting to go up this week. The "Upcoming Schedule" on the individual high school pages should be updating each day. The clickable links for individual team at the top left of each high school page will be updated as we start getting rosters, which will be in a few weeks.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Mon, Aug 9, 2010, at 4:48 PM
  • I cannot wait for the schedules. I know I sometimes represent the minority but I think schedules are one of my favorite aspects of the website. Perhaps it is because I like to watch all 58 schools play.

    -- Posted by drawmules2 on Mon, Aug 9, 2010, at 7:12 PM
  • 1A teams that have the best to compete in the SEMO sectionals will be:

    Zalma-returning everyone

Bernie-heard good things from summer ball

Lesterville-still has Cook and a nice support system. depends if the younger kids can step up.

Leopold-has 2 big bangers back this year but can they replace a great setter and libero

Bell City-Johnson back depends on others around her. need to develop other players besides johnson.

Valle Catholic-group gets older and better from summer ball.

2A-Scott City will be hard to stop. Hogan and Simpson will lead this team back to state championship game but fall to Hermann.

3A-Cape ND and Perryville will battle but if the state realigns districts both teams wont make it out of sectionals. St Louis school should be back in the sectionals this year.

4A-No school in SEMO can compete to make it to state in this class. Not enough talent.

  • Rachel, I noticed how last year you made some brackets for Districts. Is there any way you could, or would, make brackets for other area tournaments throughout the season? I think that would be a good idea.

-- Posted by Kitty Purry on Tue, Aug 10, 2010, at 3:53 PM
  • Kitty Purry

If the same teams are in the Woodland Tournament, how would you rank them this year?

    Rachel,

Excellent idea about the brackets, is this possible? Tournament details are always good. Would be nice for basketball also. If possible please list the scores for us that do not have the chance to attend.

-- Posted by deervalley on Wed, Aug 11, 2010, at 8:52 AM
  • Deervalley, I'm not sure of how the teams will be seeded in this year's tournament (or if the same teams from last year will be in it this year), but if I had to rank them, here's how I would do it:

    1) Leopold

    2) Zalma

    3) Advance

    4) Meadow Heights

    5) Saxony Lutheran

    6) Woodland

    7) Greenville

    8) Oak Ridge

I really like the idea about doing tournament brackets on here and hope there's a way that Rachel can implement it. Great idea about the scores, too. There are Team Trackers on here, but not every school has its own Team Tracker so not every game gets reported on this website.

  • Kitty Purry

Thanks for your insite. I would have to agree with your list. I know people have been talking about Zalma and Advance this year. I also know Leopold is starting a new setter and defensive specialist. I think the setter will do fine they have found. She will have her moments both good and bad but that is to be expected changing from a hitter to a setter. But she is a very good athlete and smart. I have not heard who the defensive specialist will be.

The other teams could be anyone's guess but we will know before very long.

-- Posted by deervalley on Thu, Aug 12, 2010, at 9:47 AM
  • I would love to get regular-season tournament brackets up on the site. I don't always gets a copy, but that can be solved pretty easily. The plan was for them to eventually go on a dedicated schedule page...guess i should go ahead and finish making that...

    :)

Also, we've started updating schedules throughout the site and sent out requests to every school asking for their schedules. So, if you click on a sport name on any high school page you should start to see "2010 Jackson Football Schedule" (for example) in place of the 2009 schedule. We'll be adding the schedules furiously over the next few weeks.

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Thu, Aug 12, 2010, at 10:44 AM
  • I'll be glad when the volleyball schedules are ready. Volleyball is my favorite sport.

If anyone has a tournament bracket for the volleyball tournament at the Show Me Center please post. The sooner we have the bracket the sooner I can predict which teams will advance to the final four. Last year I managed to predict which teams would advance to the final four in the 40 team tournament before it started. I doubt if I get all four teams right this year. But you never know. History repeats itself.

    -- Posted by drawmules2 on Mon, Aug 16, 2010, at 12:05 AM
  • Looking forward to seeing the brackets, Rachel! :)

I agree with drawmules2. I'm anxious to see the pool assignments/schedule for the SEMO Classics as well. I think it's the biggest regular season high school volleyball tournament in the state. Wonder if there will be any new teams in it this year. Oh, drawmules2, it was 48 teams last year ;) (just to clarify). HaHa. If memory serves, the teams that made it to the Final Four (in the Gold Bracket) last year were Notre Dame, Eminence, Scott City and Lebanon, correct?

Drawmules2 (or anyone else), have you heard anything about Eminence this season? They were pretty strong last year and were ranked first in the state polls pretty much all throughout the entire season before they fell in Districts to their county rival Winona.

  • Kitty Purry

Notre Dame, Eminence, Scott City and Lebanon were the four teams that advanced to the final four last season.

Eminence is once again the favorite to win the Class 1 state title as far as I am concerned.

This is like the pre season rankings and probably does not mean much but the season starts next week and we will start getting a feel for how good are favorite teams really are.

Will the Woodland Tour. go as seated or will you predict some upsets?

-- Posted by deervalley on Thu, Aug 26, 2010, at 12:59 PM
  • Am I the only person who is a bit surprised Advance was seeded ahead of Zalma? I may just be uninformed, though. What happened when the two teams met last season?

-- Posted by Rachel Crader on Thu, Aug 26, 2010, at 1:47 PM
  • I think any of the top three could win but without games being played there could be a sleeper we are unaware of. Leopold will have most of their hitters back but will have a new setter and defensive specialist. I still think they will be hard to beat but who knows. We will see what happens next week.

-- Posted by deervalley on Thu, Aug 26, 2010, at 3:28 PM
  • What is the cost to attend the Woodland Tournament?

-- Posted by Rebel on Thu, Aug 26, 2010, at 3:56 PM
  • Rebel, the cost to attend Woodland Tournament is $3 for adults, $2 for students.

Deervalley, I do expect there to be some upsets in the tournament this year. I won't speculate on what team(s) I think will upset, though.

Rachel, I'm surprised at that as well. Last season, Zalma beat Advance in regular season 25-22, 25-12 but Advance upset Zalma in the semifinals of the Class 1 District 3 match 26-24 25-16. This summer, Zalma beat Advance at a tournament in Perryville in three sets (without Zalma's top player there). I think Zalma has the advantage (returning their entire starting lineup from last season in addition to an outstanding freshman who's been moved up to varsity) over Advance who lost four seniors including their all-star setter Sara Mace. The Lady Hornets still have a good hitter in Liza Gray, though. I expect the Advance-Zalma semifinal game Thursday night to be very exciting. Emotions always run high when archrivals Zalma and Advance play each other.

Rachel, have any of the coaches (e-)mailed you a copy of the Woodland Tournament bracket? If not, I can bring a copy by your office so you can post a bracket on semoball.com for all of the readers/viewers/bloggers to see.

  • Info from Maxpreps:

    Current Records

Leopold 2-0 (defeated Meadow Heights and Advance)

    Lesterville 1-0 (defeated Valley)

Bismarck 1-1 (defeated Crystal City, lost to DeSoto)

Winona 0-1 (lost to West Plains)

    Summersville 1-0 (defeated Bunker)

Bismarck plays @ Lesterville this evening, I will post a score after the game.

  • atm7819

I might be wrong. But maxpreps may have an error. I don't believe Leopold has played Advance this season. Zalma beat Advance last night in the tournament. Unless Leopold played Advance before the tournament they could not have a win against Advance this season.

    -- Posted by drawmules2 on Fri, Sep 3, 2010, at 3:06 PM
  • You may be correct, I don't really know. According to MaxPreps, Leopold beat Advance yesterday. I checked both schools websites. Leopold doesn't have a schedule posted, but Advance does. It just says Woodland Tournament 8-30/9-03. If Zalma beat Advance in the tourney yesterday, I would say someone posted incorrect info on Maxpreps.

    -- Posted by atm7819 on Fri, Sep 3, 2010, at 3:47 PM
  • Maxpreps is wrong. Leopold is 2-0. They beat Woodland's JV 25-13, 25-3 the opening night of the Woodland Tournament and then squeaked out a win against Meadow Heights 17-25, 25-15, 26-24 in what was a surprisingly intense game.

Zalma is also 2-0. They beat Saxony Lutheran 25-12, 25-13 the opening night of the Woodland Tournament and upset Advance 25-14, 25-14 last night.

Both teams are playing for the championship tonight at 8 p.m. Should be a very good game.

  • Kitty Purry,

Any pre game predictions at Woodland tonight. Last night the games I saw, Zalma looked better than Leopold and I think Meadow Heights could beat Advance. However, tonight is a new day and who know who will show up to play in high school sports.

-- Posted by deervalley on Fri, Sep 3, 2010, at 5:06 PM
  • Leopold and Meadow Heights, probably by more of wishful thinking than anything else.

Now need to refer to school websites or maxpreps. You can find scoreboard archives with daily results here: http://semoball.com/scoreboard

And full schedules are posted on our high school pages. The drop down menu at the top of the page labeled "schools" will take you where you need to go. :)

  • Thank you Rachel.

Just got home from watching Lesterville defeat Bismarck 25-20, 25-12. Both teams started off with some unforced errors and missed serves. Lesterville cleaned their game up and dominated the rest of the match. Cook led the way, but they played a very good team game. The younger girls stepped up and played very well. I think they will only improve more as they continue to gain valuable varsity experience and their confidence grows. Good early season win for the defending state champs.

  • So, Zalma knocks off state-ranked Leopold for the Woodland Tournament championship tonight. Could it be Zalma vs. Lesterville at Sectionals? Time will tell.

Sorry, deervalley, I haven't been on this forum in a while or else I would have responded to your posts. I am very impressed with Meadow Heights. They gave Leopold a run for their money and mopped the floor with Advance tonight. I think Meadow Heights plays Leopold Tuesday night. That could be a very exciting game to watch and I'm sure the Lady Panthers will be out for blood to avenge that close loss.

I also know that Zalma takes on another state-ranked team, Bell City, Tuesday night at the Cubs's home court.

Should be an exciting week in Southeast Missouri volleyball before the big SEMO Classics.

Deervalley, correct me if I am wrong, but these were the All-Tournament picks at Woodland tonight:

    *Advance: Liza Gray, Aimee Simmers

*Meadow Heights: Erin Bollmann, Gina Cureton

*Leopold: Abby Landewee, Emily Elfrink, Denae Arnzen

*Zalma: Lesta Newberry, Angela Dickinson, Emily Merick

Apologize if I misspelled anyone's name or left someone off. This was just the info that was passed along to me.

  • I see on here where Zalma defeated Bell City tonight 25-22, 18-25, 25-22 rljohnson93. Thanks for posting scores from Lesterville atm7819. They're a team I'm keeping my eyes on this year. I've noticed they don't get any coverage on this site, not sure why, new here, but like seeing someone post their scores. Keep posting. Thanks.

  • The Legend

Lesterville is out of the coverage area that would be the reason. I am sure there is enough people out there that could keep you updated on the season.

  • I think Zalma will be a very heavy contender for sectionals this year, they have returned there entire team and added an amazing freshmen standout (dont be fooled by the word freshmen, I promise you will be impressed!) These girls have been playing very well so far this year, and have already knocked off Bell City (whom seems to have a pretty descent program) and Leopold. Lesta Newberry is returning as a big gun, who has really stepped up her hitting and blocking and has a pretty good serve. Angela Dickinson is Lesta's opposite and doing a great job and almost leading the team in kills, she really knows how to place the ball and is becoming an aggressive contender. Alisha Hendrix is doing very well with her serving and passing skills and has a wild left arm that she hits pretty hard with that seems to always confuse the other team. Lorie VanGennip has came out of no where and can really bang the ball down now too, she plays hard and wants to win, she truly captures the spirit of the team and won't let anything hit the floor unless she does too! Rounding out Zalma's hitters is freshmen newcomer Emily Merick, Emily is just a freshmen and has a heck of an arm and truly is a fierce competitor. Torie VanGennip has been pulled from Librero to setter and has done an excellent job, she has very nice clean, consistant sets and is very athletic, she does a great job on overpasses by keeping them on our side and still setting the ball, Torrie also is utlizing a jump serve this season and is getting better and better at it everyday, its not the strongest serve I've seen but has a very nice top spin on it seems very intimidating to competitors, I can tell you first hand they are tough serves to recieve and make a good pass! Zalma as of right now is 4-0 and have already knocked of state ranked teams Leopold and Bell City and won the Woodland tourney for the first time in 10 years! If Zalma looses any local games it won't be because they are a better team, but because they occassionally allow themselves to get intimidated by volleyball powerhouses such as Leopold and they start off playing scared. Since they already beat these teams I believe their confindence will grow and will be a huge contender!

  • All three class one schools from Bollinger County are ranked in the top ten ( Leopold, Zalma, and Meadow Heights ) Pretty impressive for a small county. Very proud to be a Bollinger County volleyball fan this year!! Good luck to these teams for the remainder of the season. It's a shame they have to be in the same district...

So these 3 are all in the same district?? That has to be like Lesterville, Bismarck and Valle last year. All ranked and all in the same district. Sure makes going to state tough on a team.

-- Posted by semovolleyball on Tue, Sep 14, 2010, at 2:37 PM
  • That's right, rljohnson93. Same thing for Eminence and Winona -- when Winona is a class one team like they are this year. Very tough...

  • Sure will be fun come districts with all these teams divided up. Can't wait to see what teams make it to sectionals. I love seeing all the SEMO area teams ranked in state. Lesterville, Bismarck, Zalma, Bell City, Leopold, Eminence, Winona, Valle Catholic, and Meadow Heights. Great area for Class 1 volleyball.

  • I'm not sure how this works. How could Bernie be one of the class 1 schools receiving consideration the last two weeks, and they haven't lost a game since they played Leopold and they beat New Haven easily in two sets at the SEMO tournament, and they just won first place at ASU, yet now they are not even being considered as a top 10? Can anyone explain?

-- Posted by VBMama on Mon, Sep 27, 2010, at 2:39 PM
  • Well I would say because Bernie has lost to Bell City and Bismarck. Plus Bernie didn't win the full tourney. They won a step down division. This tourney was broken up by divisions. The top teams played in one division while the others played in another. But I think the reason they are not ranked is because losing to Bismarck and Bell City.

-- Posted by semovolleyball on Mon, Sep 27, 2010, at 3:00 PM
  • VBMama

Your complaints about the state rankings are legit. These rankings are never accurate. Zalma is ranked No. 6 in Class 1. I would be shocked if there are five teams in Missouri better than Zalma. Leopold shouldn't ranked higher. New Haven should not be ranked.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Mon, Sep 27, 2010, at 4:12 PM
  • Typo. I meant to say Leopol SHOULD be ranked higher.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Mon, Sep 27, 2010, at 4:15 PM
  • I agree, state rankings are a joke. they know nothing about us in southeast missouri.

-- Posted by BBfanatic on Mon, Sep 27, 2010, at 4:25 PM
  • Bernie has a win against Poplar Bluff. Lesterville has a loss to Poplar Bluff. I've watched both teams. Bernie and Lesterville should have similiar positions in the state rankings.

    Meadow Heights should be ranked.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Mon, Sep 27, 2010, at 4:30 PM
  • I think the SEMO area is represented in these polls very well. But you need to keep in mind that if your high school coach doesn't send in records and results then you will be left out. This isn't a poll done by the media like all the other MSHSAA sports. If your school doesn't send in the proper info they will be left out. Valle is a great example of this. 15-0-1 and they just got mentioned in the poll. Just like every poll in every sport they generally don't mean anything until the games are acutally played.

Bernie I don't think should be in the top ten. Not until they can beat Leopold, Zalma, Bell City, Meadow Heights, or Bismarck. You got to beat someone to be ranked.

I think about 5 to 8 teams in the SEMO area have a chance to win it all. Leopold, Zalma, Meadow Heights, Lesterville, Valle, Eminence, Winona, Summersville, and Bell City.

    My rankings would go

    Eminence

    Valle

    Leopold

    Zalma

    Lesterville

    Meadow Heights

    Winona

    Summersville

    Osceola

    KC Lutheran

-- Posted by semovolleyball on Mon, Sep 27, 2010, at 5:31 PM
  • I'm just saying that the last two weeks, Bernie was "receiving consideration." They keep getting better and better. They beat a top ten team easily (New Haven), they haven't lost a game since Leopold, and they beat a team that beat Lesterville and all of a sudden, they are not "receiving consideration" anymore. I've watched them play and I have seen them have their bad moments like any team does, but over all, they have improved greatly even since the SEMO tournament. Given another chance, I think they will beat Bell City and Bismarck and Meadow Heights. And they would probably give Leopold a run for their money.

-- Posted by VBMama on Mon, Sep 27, 2010, at 7:30 PM
  • I agree with both rljohnson and VBMama.

I believe the results at the ASU Tournament are a poor indication of how a Class 1 team in Southeast Missouri will perform in the state playoffs. I wouldn't get too excited by these results. Bernie's best win is against Poplar Bluff. Poplar Bluff has wins against Bell City and Lesterville. Nevertheless, Bernie has won nine consecutive games if you dismiss the tie they had against Piggott in pool play at the ASU Tournament.

I would have Leopold, Zalma and Eminence ranked No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 in the state. I'm not sure in which order. I am unsure if I would have Bernie ranked in the top 10. However, I would have Bernie ranked ahead of New Haven. And I agree with VBMama if Bernie was receiving consideration in the state polls a few weeks ago they should receive consideration now.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Mon, Sep 27, 2010, at 8:07 PM
  • With all of this being said . . . Class 1 volleyball is as strong as you will see it in Southeast Missouri . . . Advance, Bell City, Bernie, Eminence, Leopold, Lesterville, Meadow Heights and Zalma all have a chance at the end of the year. I believe the team that wins the Southeast Missouri sectional will play Eminence in the state finals. However, I haven't seen Valle. I know very little about Valle.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Mon, Sep 27, 2010, at 8:18 PM
  • From my understanding, the state rankings are not meant to accurately reflect the best top 10 teams in the state. On the website it says the mere purpose is just to get people talking about volleyball. In order for your team to be on the list, your school/coach has to pay the $25 membership fee to be a part of the Missouri High School Volleyball Coaches Association (MHSVCA) and the coach has to e-mail them every Sunday before they release the poll with his/her top 10 rankings in the state with explanations as to why they ranked certain teams the way they did. The reason why Bernie probably isn't on the list is because either their coach probably doesn't nominate them or maybe she forgot to send in their record this time? You would have to ask her.

Now, as far as the top teams in the state goes, I don't really agree with that list either. Obviously the team to beat in Class 1 is Lesterville since they are the defending state champions. However, I want to remind everyone that Meadow Heights took both Eminence and Lesterville three sets not too long ago and they aren't even on the list anymore. That in of itself speaks volumes. There are plenty of Class 1 schools in Southeast Missouri that are powerhouses this year. I believe the top two are Leopold and Zalma and they will be in contention until the end of the season. They are both equally strong teams and I wouldn't rank one higher than the other. Leopold has definitely improved since the Woodland Tournament when Zalma defeated them for the championship and they avenged this loss a few days ago on the Lady Wildcats' home court. I expect these two teams will meet again in the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament at Greenville. Playing on a neutral court may give Zalma an edge and this time Zalma will (or should) want the win more. It's a shame, in my opinion, that these two teams are in the same district because I honestly believe that both of them could win state this year. Their county nemesis to the north, Meadow Heights, could very easily upset one of these two teams, though, as the Lady Panthers have taken both Leopold and Zalma three sets each time they have played. Bollinger County does seem to have the strongest teams in Class 1 this season! But to suggest that Leopold is any better than Zalma is just flawed in my opinion especially after tonight's game against Scott City in which the Lady Rams pretty handily defeated Leopold 28-26, 25-10. Scott City needed three sets to knock off Zalma and the scores were extremely close. Now I'm not arguing that Zalma is better than Leopold. Like I said, they are both equally strong teams. I love watching both play and hope I get to make it to the MVC Tournament in Greenville to watch these two teams duke it out.

As for the Class 1 teams in Stoddard County, from my understanding it's a tossup because Bell City has beaten Bernie who has defeated Advance twice but Advance has defeated Bell City. This should make Mr. Dustin Ward happy to read this but I wouldn't be surprised if Bernie knocked off Bell City in Districts and advanced to sectionals. The winner of District 2, however, would play the winner of District 3 (the Leopold/Zalma district) first. God help them.

  • The Legend

One team everyone, with the exception of rljohnson93, may have overlooked is Valle Catholic. I'm headed to Ste. Genevieve on Oct. 11 to watch Valle Catholic play Ste. Genevieve. The Southeast Missouri teams mentioned would have to get past Valle Catholic in the state sectional. Valle Catholic is in Lesterville's district.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Tue, Sep 28, 2010, at 12:46 PM
  • Good match up tomorrow night. #1 Eminence and #2 Lesterville lock horns. Should be worth the drive to Lesterville to watch.

-- Posted by semovolleyball on Wed, Sep 29, 2010, at 11:23 AM
  • Keep us posted with the scores of that game, rljohnson93. Is there any way that you can provide live updates? Would be greatly appreciated!

As for the poll, Zalma may move up again this week in the poll and Leopold may drop. Zalma's coach can easily make the argument that Zalma took Scott City three sets and almost beat them whereas Scott City handled Leopold in two sets and although the first set was close Scott City crushed them the second set. He could also make the case that Dexter took Leopold three sets and Zalma easily defeated Dexter in the SEMO Classics. Zalma has a tough game tomorrow against Bernie, and Leopold has an easy game against Oran, so we'll see, but as I said, I expect these two county/conference/district foes to be in contention throughout the entire season. I'm eager to see these two teams square off for the championship of the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament, although I'm sure Meadow Heights will make it just as exciting and could very well prevent one of these teams from playing for first.

-- Posted by The Legend on Wed, Sep 29, 2010, at 12:46 PM
  • I believe Bernie should be state ranked with wins against Advance, Dexter, Poplar Bluff, and winning 1st place in the ASU Tournament. Let it be known that Bernie has not lost a game since the coach changed the rotation. This is a very young team which means they could be a fierce competitor for years to come. I'm anxious to see how districts play out.
