Bumped this thread. Post away!

I read that Valle beat St. Gen in two...25-12, 25-22...link to story is attached...http://www.dailyjournalonline.com/sports/high-school/volleyball/article_77c5a132-d60f-11df-96f5-001cc4c03286.html

-- Posted by volleyballin on Tue, Oct 12, 2010, at 10:21 PM

This is correct. Right now . . . on paper Valle Catholic is the team to beat as far as I am concerned. But you wouldn't know it by looking at the state volleyball rankings.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Tue, Oct 12, 2010, at 11:40 PM

Dustin, I too have been reading lots about Valle Catholic this season. Their record is certainly impressive, but in your expert volleyball opinion, do you think they can defeat the defending Class 1 state champions Lesterville in District 4? That may very well be worth the drive to Ellington to see in a little over a week!

One more question. Do you know anything about Greenville? I'm a little perplexed after looking at the scores from their games against Leopold (25-17, 25-23) and Zalma (25-21, 25-20). Those scores are unusually close for a team that hardly ever gets mentioned on here. Would you consider Greenville a sleeper team in the Mississippi Valley Conference Tournament? I see from the brackets you posted that if they defeat Oak Ridge, they would meet up with Leopold again (on their home court) and judging from those scores above, I'd say the Lady Bears could stand a good chance at upsetting the top-seeded Lady Wildcats. What is your take on this?

-- Posted by The Legend on Wed, Oct 13, 2010, at 12:49 AM

The Legend

You are not the only one who was left scratching the head at those scores.

-- Posted by zalmanian on Wed, Oct 13, 2010, at 1:31 AM

The Legend

1. Valle Catholic wins a set against Ste. Genevieve 25-12. I watched Ste. Genevieve. They are huge. Ste. Genevieve defeated Perryville. The Valle Catholic / Ste. Genevieve score suggests they are indeed legitimate. They have one loss this season. I haven't watched them play. But they have a strong resume.

2. I will make the drive to Ellington to watch the Class 1 District 4 championship if there are not other district championships being played in Southeast Missouri. If anyone needs directions let me know. I drove to Ellington last summer to take photos of the athletic facilities and make a Google map of the town. I always knew it would come in handy eventually!

3. I haven't had the opportunity to watch Greenville this year. I think Meadow Heights has a chance to upset Zalma and Leopold. I think it less likely Greeenville will upset Leopold. But I don't like giving predictions on teams I haven't watched.

You can't eat your tomatoes until they turn red. We will have to wait and see what happens.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sat, Oct 16, 2010, at 4:12 PM

Dustin, curious to get your take on all the other conference tournaments around here. That Zalma-Leopold game really surprised me especially after seeing how Leopold skunked them in that first set. The Bloomfield-Bernie game was also really close. Going into the last week of regular season play before Districts, I'm curious to get your perspective on what you think will happen this coming week and maybe a little insight going into Districts. Are you going to do another ranking of all the teams in Southeast Missouri? I always enjoy reading those and your reasoning behind each rank.

I would really like to see how the teams in Class 1 District 4 are going to be seeded (the Lesterville-Bismarck-Valle Catholic district) as well as District 2 (Bell City-Bernie-Gideon). Unfortunately, it seems as though there are going to be a lot of powerhouses eliminated at the District level, but I guess that's what it's all about: true competition, playing the best of the best.

-- Posted by The Legend on Sat, Oct 16, 2010, at 4:38 PM

The Legend

I'm on my way home from Crystal City. I'll share my thoughts later. My initial thoughts are things are looking really tough for all the teams in my rankings in the postseason. There are talented teams from outside Southeast Missouri that our Class 1, Class 2, Class 3 and Class 4 representatives will have to beat to get to state. The sectionals for our local schools are going to be tough.

Teams not included in the rankings because of their geographical location (Class 1: Valle Catholic and Lesterville), (Class 2: St. Pius X and Crystal City), (Class 3: DeSoto) and (Class 4: Washington, currently ranked No. 1 in Class 4) are good. Some of them are very good.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sat, Oct 16, 2010, at 5:39 PM

So was there not a championship game to

the Crystal City Tourney?

-- Posted by freefaller on Sat, Oct 16, 2010, at 6:04 PM

Freefaller

The winner of a six team pool is the champion. One of the strangest formats I've seen. I think the top two teams in the pool should play a championship game.

-- Posted by Dustin Ward on Sat, Oct 16, 2010, at 7:33 PM

Dustin, they just changed that this year then!

I remember last year and the format was like

you would have liked ( best two teams). SC

had to wait & wait for Westminster to get to

the other gym since they played the last game

of pool play while SC sat out. SC won last year

and the format determined the outcome of that

game and maybe this year's as well. Ask your

favorite SC 'legend' & let me know if my memory

is slipping!
