SEMO Basketball
Posted by CHSbaseball on Mon, Dec 6, 2010, at 7:56 PM:

I'm watching semo on espn3 vs iowa state and i have high hopes for our team next year if butler can get a redshirt and porter and stone are as good as advertised and our two 3 star recruits coming in. But i think this could be a long year. we only have 9 guys dressed out and I'm quite disappointed with some of the talent we have, i thought some of these guys were much better. If anyone has any inside info on possible other recruits next year and who may leave potentially please post

SEMO might be headed in the right direction. I honestly believe Coach Nutt is doing his best. Recruiting might be more important than in-game coaching in college basketball. I don't have any inside information on recruiting. However, I won't disagree recruiting is the key formula to success in college basketball. Change takes time. Be patient.

i've always thought good recruiting beats good coaching. If you can get better players than your opponents than you ultimately begin with a much better chance to win.

Imagine if they had otto bobby mike wiggins tolbert and willen

-- Posted by Dustin Ruby on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 2:23 PM

Bryant Allen was a stud when he played at Maplewood in highschool. I havent seen him do anything at Minnesota but he would be a great pick up for SEMO, if they could get him to come.

-- Posted by that_1guy on Wed, Dec 8, 2010, at 4:37 PM

Who is wiggins?

Well I am not SEMO University, but it seems to me if you have dwindling crowds and your team has a lose record I would at the very least show your home town boys some love. My gosh, this area has some tremendous athletes. And SEMO stands for Southeast Missouri. They may not be Nutt's type of guy but at this point I'd start questioning my judgement. Even if Nutt is not interested in recruiting them he could at least show them some respect and at least look at em. If you can't bring in a crowd by a winning record you could at the very least bring the crowds in by earning the respect of the people through your character.

I know he is a great player in both sports, but I don't see Allen being a receiver at the college level standing only 6'

-- Posted by sportsfanatic on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 12:56 PM

Correct me if i am wrong, but who has Nutt not recruited since he has been here that deserves D1 status???? Since he has been here, he brought Nick Nimechek from bell city here, got Michael Porter from sikeston to come back....He has recruited Otto but i think we all know that isnt gonna happen, but he still tried...he has recruited Tolbert...he recruited Hatchett but he didnt have the grades...i dont understand why we are bashing Nutt for not trying to get SEMO guys...its seems to me he is trying his damnest.

-- Posted by bigriver333 on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 2:27 PM

I'd like if we would've tried to get the flanigan kid from dexter? did they try

-- Posted by CHSbaseball on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 2:37 PM

To be honest i had never heard anything about the FLannigan kid until they were showing him on the news signing. Just didnt seem like there was much hype about him...i have never seen him play so i dont want to take anything away from him.

-- Posted by bigriver333 on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 2:52 PM

Big River, the Flannigan kid is better than Tolbert all around, Tolbert just gets more press because of KFVS12. Bottom line there are guards here as well as big men. Nothing heard about Tolbert being recruited by him. Why isn't he considering SEMO? Mike's only back because of other reasons and he has a kid here or he'd stayed in Springfield. He never considered Nimechek until he saw him in the JUCO tournament looking at other transfers. Nutt may not be the problem, maybe it his staff needs to do a better job of finding guys. None of them are from around here. Nevertheless he can't keep putting Nutt's on the team gezzz. I wouldn't consider them D1 players by any means so I wouldn't be so quick to judge who is D1 around her or not.

-- Posted by Interests Me on Thu, Dec 9, 2010, at 3:16 PM

No Southeast Missouri kids on the Redhakws team, but two Nutt boys. Hmmmm.

I am deeply disappointed in Redhawks basketball. I keep hearing how they are 'on their way' to being good but here's a newsflash; We've been hearing that for a couple of years. Yes, yes, we're taking our lumps NOW, but we're on the cusp of breaking through. We're playing tough on road games but just can't finish the job." That kind of talk is tired. A quality up and coming team would theoretically at least sneak one or two of those close ones out, but the fact is we lose ALL of them, and even a decent team would eke out one by shear luck. This indicates to me that we are just severely lacking talent to matchup with even our own conference.

I have to shake my head in wonder at this program, I really do. Not so many years ago they were a program, at least at this level, to be modeled after. Filling the stands, an electric atmosphere, with a crowd knowing a great performance was coming and a very likely win. Now there's 900 fans at a game and we can't even remotely expect to win the home games. That is pretty sad, as in conference play, you can figure to win 2 of 3 at home, lose 2 of 3 on the road, and that will net you a .500 conference record. Losing most at home bodes very, very badly under that equation.

They have fallen on really bad times. There is no excuse for not getting great recruits in there. For a long time they had top facility in conference, now still top 2 or 3, with a very good practice facility as well. It used to be that we could woo recruits in and have them watch a game and see 6,000 electric and screaming fans which was impressive to recruits, and now a recruit sees 900 fans and another home loss..... Where this ends, I don't know.

And this will probably really set off some sparks, but I just don't see why a university hires a coach who is sub .500 at a similarly sized school. To me, that says we are committed to mediocrity. Personally, I think Nutt is very classy, committed to his wife and family, and a decent coach. His players I have met are extremely polite and disciplined and I give him alot of credit for that. But really, what was the administration thinking would be different by bringing in a sub .500 coach?

On a positive note, I am willing to wait until next year as this season is well past salvageable. I like Michael Porter being eligible and definitel the Memphis guys.

Here's to next year. What a worn out cliche that is for many, many programs though!

I understand the disappointment in SEMO basketball the last few years or so, but i think we are putting way too much blame on Dickey and not Scott Edgar...it takes time to clean up the mess Edgar made...remember Nutt had to come in and try and win with Edgar's players his first year...In the time period nutt had for his first year he was just trying to find JUCO kids to fill out a decent roster, and his biggest recruit (powell) got hurt last year....Nutt has a reputation of recruiting local kids and thats why i think SEMO chose to go that route...I think NUTT is out there trying to get these guys but remember folks he hasnt even been around for two years yet. i like the idea that he has signed some kids from memphis right out of high school, i think over time he will continue to get local kids out of high school rather than finding the "thugs" out of JUCO like edgar did.

-- Posted by bigriver333 on Fri, Dec 10, 2010, at 8:58 AM

Well BigRiver333, you are trying and it is evident your within the crew. But your crew needs to look outside of the 30 mile radius. Flannigan was a big miss for you guys. HUGH! Especially if you didn't know anything about him. I find that hard to believe though. You guys should have at least looked at the kid and there are a few others outside of the 30 mile radius. Have you look at any guards? How about the kid in Charleston? As someone said it would say a lot for SEMO's character to look at these guys. If you don't want em fine but you earn respect by giving respect. And at least you have gained some support. And if Nutt can bring his is own kids and put em on the team............well .... enough said.

No i am not on staff, just an alumni. Graduated 6 years ago. My freshman year at SEMO was the last year for Michael Stokes after they went to the NCAA...i went to every game and got to watch a full ShowMe center, so i know now what it feels like to sit and watch a game with only 900 fans..I am not sold yet either that NUTT is our savior, but however i do think we are quick to judge and say that he shouldnt be the guy...remember folks coach k had two losing seasons at Duke and was close to getting fired but they kept him around...looks like a pretty good decision...i think you have to give a coach at the college level at least 4 years to determine whether or not his recruiting and system is working...by four years his teams are all made up by players that he recruited, so in two years if SEMO is still where they are, then we can decide whether or not NUTT is the guy.

You know the Tolbert kid committed to semo but then Dickey told him he didnt have a scholarship for him, does anyone know if his sons are on scholarship, that would be interesting.

-- Posted by formerredhawk on Fri, Dec 10, 2010, at 11:55 AM

Did he really? Scholarships are subject to renewal I believe so I think nutt should tell him to come on and kick house to the curb.. We'll have enough post players coming back and new ones.. Or Waylon jones. God is he bad

All very good points, but still, bringing someone in who was sub .500 at a similarly situated school?

I know everybody is different on this, but I personally like the idea of bringing someone up from a smaller school who has shown a propensity for excellence at that level.

Sort of like Jerry Kill. He has earned his place at Minnesota, having resurrected the SIU football team, then putting a larger school Northern Illinios (at least in conference size, revenue, etc) in the top 25 of big time college football teams. So Minnesota did what I personally think is the right thing to do. They looked downward and asked, "Who has been climbing the ladder and excelling at every level?" That question was answered in Jerry Kill.

Certainly it remains to be seen if he'll excel at Minnesota, odds are actually that he will improve them but it is difficult to break into the upper echelon of Big Ten football so success for him would be consistently making a bowl game, in my opinion.

Anyway, again, my point is that we brought in a coach with a track record for sub mediocrity. Admittedly, I am optimistic that he might turn the corner for the program soon but has yet to do so. I'll have patience for a bit longer though, he is, afterall, dealing with someone else's mess still.

bigriver333- You can't use the "Edgar" excuse for this year. Edgar has nothing to do with some of the current players who are playing but aren't D1 players.

GreatFun- I agree about hiring a sub-500 coach.

I wanna know more about asking Tolbert to play at SEMO and then backing out on the scholie! anyone know? I bet he has one but he is saving it for Porter. I'd like to see Porter go there and he would get every advantage. But heck he does now. I'd like to see what he could do at a Big 12 school.

-- Posted by Blam it on the Ref on Sat, Dec 11, 2010, at 9:34 AM

I talked to his brother and said hey i read this and he goes yeah whered you hear that, i told him the internet and he said yeah dude it's true so now we have no idea where he'll go.. he said semo is still in the mix though.... and i was thinking the same... i bet dickey is holding on to that one scholarship left hoping, praying, and begging that otto will take it... but i'd take tolbert and just not renew one of the current players scholarships if otto does wanna come here

-- Posted by CHSbaseball on Sat, Dec 11, 2010, at 11:54 AM

Ya know, if a coach will do that to ya, he doesn't have much respect for ya. And Tolbert needs to seriously consider the next four years playing for a guy who would do that to ya. I hope the family will look for a college that wants the boy not just a stand by just in.

Consideration for Jordan McGowan out of Bernie?

Good shooting guard and talented on defense. One of the main five when Bernie went to state last year. I think he would be worth a look.

-- Posted by Proud MaMa on Wed, Dec 15, 2010, at 10:32 AM

Have only been to a couple SEMO games in the last two years, but if it is true his sons are getting full rides, then that just looks bad, even if they are good players. Perhaps they are walk-ons. If they are good enough then to me it would seem it would be better for all concerned to play for another program. I do understand a father wanting to coach his own kids, but you have to let go sooner or later. Of course if they were 6'9 no one would say a word!!!

-- Posted by khan on Wed, Dec 15, 2010, at 10:16 PM

I thought one of them walked on last year.

-- Posted by BB-BORE on Thu, Dec 16, 2010, at 9:54 PM

Southeast just beat Jacksonville State on their first road conference game of the year! 76-67 I think. I don't know what JAX State has, but winning on the road is very difficult, and my hat goes off to them.

-- Posted by GreatFun on Sun, Dec 19, 2010, at 7:29 PM

it's just hard to justify Nutt having his sons on board getting a free ride....however talented they may or may not be, it just doesn't smell right...he had one son on his team at ASU near the end of his tenure, but again, that did not pass the smell test, either.....anyway, be prepared for below par results going foward with Nutt....he would make a pretty good assistant, but he is, and will continue to be, way over his head ... peter principle in action.

THE ANSWER IS COACH MCFERREN

-- Posted by semograd88 on Thu, Jan 20, 2011, at 6:34 PM

The answer is give the program a chance!

-- Posted by redhawkstudent on Thu, Jan 20, 2011, at 10:10 PM

Rome wasn't built in a day, and college programs aren't built in a year and a half. It usually takes anywhere from 3-5 years to mold a program into whatever style the coach wants. You just got to take the bitter with the sweet. Right now it's just pretty bitter.

Wow, just lost to an abysmal Jax State at home. Sad times at SE.

-- Posted by GreatFun on Thu, Jan 27, 2011, at 11:39 PM

are we back? Just beat Murray at home
