Naylor freshman Lane fights illness, twirls no-hitter

DAR STAFF

Naylor freshman Chelsea Lane overcame sickness and threw her first no-hitter of the season Thursday as the Lady Eagles rolled past Bernie, 10-0, in six innings.

Lane finished with five strikeouts and four walks despite missing significant time earlier in the week because of an illness.

Courtney Sullivan led the Naylor offense with four hits and two runs while Brooke Baccus and Seana Hughey both added two hits. Naylor scored three runs in the second inning and then plated single runs in the third and and sixth inning and added five in the fifth.

The Lady Eagles will next play at Greenville on Monday beginning at 4 p.m.

Greenville 12, Doniphan 2 (six innings)

* The Lady Bears scored eight runs in the third inning and easily defeated Doniphan on the diamond Thursday evening.

Kara Sheppard had two hits, three RBis and three steals to lead the Greenville offense while Hannah Boyer and Lindsay Henson both had two hits. Both of Boyer's hit came in the third inning as the Lady Bears (6-3) sent 13 batters to the plate.

Sara Condray was 1-for-2 with three staals at the plate and got the win on the mound as she allowed no earned runs on eight hits. She also struck out five and walked two.

Twin RIvers 9, Clearwater 0

* The Lady Royals got a strong pitching performance by Kayla Cunningham and a five-run second inning led to a big win for Twin Rivers.

Cunningham struck out 10 in seven innings and gave up just five hits while walking none.

The Lady Royals (6-0) walked 13 times at the plate and no batter had more than one hit. Kelci Scott scored three times while Cunningham crossed homeplate twice. Felicia Carter had three RBIs and Carlee Vancil and Holly Gordon both drove in two.

Neelyville 5, East Carter 3

* Lindsey Emerson recorded three hits and two RBIs to lead the Lady Tigers' offense while Libby Parish earned the win on the mound.

Parish surrendered six hits and allowed no earned runs in seven innings.

Andrea Law also had two hits for Neeelyville. Lindsey Eudaley led the Lady Redbirds with two hits while Miranda Stephens scored twice.

East Carter 7, Neelyville 6

* The Redbirds defeated Neelyville with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning on Thursday. The Tigers led 5-0 through five innings but allowed the game-winning run on a strikeout-past ball with two outs in the final inning.

"It wasn't pretty on either side, but we got the win," East Carter coach Brock Crowley said.

Scott Crowley and Derek Saffle both had RBI hits in the seventh inning for East Carter and the Redbirds also walked three times in the frame. Crowley went 2-for-3 with two runs -- including the game-winner -- and an RBI while Saffle was 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Dustin Hartgroves got the win on the mound as he threw the final three innings and allowed two earned runs.

The Redbirds are now 3-5 on the season and will face Ellington and Twin Rivers this Saturday in a threeteam round robin tournament. The three games will begin at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Bernie 19, Clarkton 9 (five innings)

* Another big offensive day pushed Bernie's record to 9-0 on the season as the Mules scored 13 runs in the second inning and cruised to an easy win over the Reindeer.

"We had another great offensive outing," Bernie coach Brad Botsch said. "It was good to see the guys hit the ball like we did. We got a big lead early on and then got pretty lackadaisical in the field."

Jevan Pierce had four hits and five runs at the plate to lead Bernie while Doug Johnson, Dustin Cluck and Tyler Trover all hit home runs. Jake Welch and Cluck had three hits in the game while Nathan Tilmon and Devin Busby both had two.

Five different pitchers threw for Bernie and Jake Owens got the win after hurling the first two frames.

"I think we only gave up three hits on the day," Botsch said. "But our control on the mound was very erratic and that led to a lot of baserunners for Clarkton."
