Katie Sylvan of San Diego chipped in on the 18th hole to edge Emma Talley for the girls title at the first Dalhousie Junior Championship.

Ty Spinella of Aledo, Texas, shot a course competitive-record round of 67 on his way a six-stroke win for the boys crown.

Round 2

Trent Hilis of Poplar Bluff earned a spot in the final round with his round of 77 Wednesday following an opening 82 at the Dalhousie Junior Championship.

Round 1 recap

Three boys are tied atop the leaderboard at 70 after being the only golfers to go under par in Tuesday's opening round.

They are Tyler Brown of Missouri, Drew Miller of Tennessee and Adam Dolezal of Illinois.

Courtney Harter, a University of Alabama recruit from Clearwater, Fla., shot a 73 to seize the lead in the girls division.

It wasn't a great day for the five Southeast Missouri golfers, but the four local boys shot in the 80s and are within range of making the cut, projected at 81 at the first day. Trent Hillis of Poplar Bluff led the locals with an 82.

First shots

The Dalhousie Junior Championship's junior-am gave a handful of AJGA players a chance to tour the course and leave an impression on local teams who entered the tournament, which had a pricetag of $1,250 per foursome.

The winning team was Lee Smith, Jody Underwood, Seth Joy and Aaron Dombrowski, who is the son of Dalhousie managing member Cord Dombrowski.

The junior in their group was Ryan Sirman, a Texas golfer who is headed to the University of Oklahoma next year. He is interviewed at the end of the video clips.

The winning score in the half-handicap was 52, while the team of Gary Turner, Scott Raines, Phil Cantoni and Nick Hogan with junior Chase Anderson was second at 53.

The Srixon Qualifier on Sunday yielded two local golfers to the tournament field for the classic: Emily Matthews and Jack Connell Jr.

Alex Reid of Jackson posted the best score among local golfers with a 75 and earned a tournament exemption for a AJGA event for a future event after passing on this week's tournament.

Last week, to preview the tournament, local junior golfers Jack Connell and Emily Matthews went over seven holes that will be key to the tournament. Check out the video from two of the top area juniors who are very familiar with the Dalhousie layout.

Connell is the son of Dalhousie director of golf Jack Connell, while Matthews has played the course in competition both on the boys high school golf team at Cape Notre Dame and as a player on the Gateway PGA Junior tour.

Intro

Hole No. 7, one of the course's longest holes at 556 yards for men, 518 for women and plenty of sand around the green

Hole No. 11, a par-3 over a water hazard

Hole No. 12, a par-4 with a second shot over a bunker to an elevated green

Hole No. 13, a par-3 with a very tall sand trap near the green

Hole No. 14, a par-4 with water along the right side

Hole No. 17, the longest par-4 for women at about 390 yards

Hole No. 18, the finishing hole featuring a green more than 80 yards in length.
