KENNETT -- The Portageville Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season Friday night, beating Kennett 67-62.

Down 36-34 at halftime, the Bulldogs scorched the nets in the third quarter, taking a 50-43 lead into the fourth quarter.

Portageville held on to the lead as Kennett chipped away, closing to 62-59 with 2:41 left when the Indians' Randrick Caruthers was whistled for a charge, shifting momentum in the game.

"It was big," Portageville coach Jim Bidewell said of the call. "That's what we've been preaching. That's the difference of teams winning and teams just letting them go in and score. It's a momentum shift -- it takes a lot of wind out of the sail of the other team. It was big -- any charge we get is big."

Kennett was plagued in the game by poor shooting, giving Portageville opportunities in transition.

"Kennett came out and missed a lot," Bidewell said. "If they hit a lot of those shots, it'd have been a different story. But they missed them and it worked out to our advantage."

Portageville (1-1) was led in scoring by Byron Wright's 25 while Dometric Trotter had 10.

"I really like this group so far," Bidewell said. "I was kind of wondering how we'd respond after our loss to Richland, but they came out ready to work and stick together. They understand, at least right now, that it's going to take improvement. They don't get down on themselves so far."
