The Twin Rivers Lady Royals showed some improvement over their earlier performances of the season but still came out on the short end of a 59-53 score against Portageville at TRCC on Saturday afternoon.

"We cut down on our turnovers, but it just wasn't enough," Lady Royals coach Jeff Walk said.

Turnovers hurt the Lady Royals (2-5) down the stretch as they tried to stay with the Lady Bulldogs and gut out a victory. Still, they played well enough on the defensive end of the floor to earn more chances on offense.

A layup by junior Torey Davis knotted the score at 46-46 with 3:30 remaining, and her free throws evened things at 48-48 less than a minute later, but the Lady Bulldogs made their free throws in crunch time.

The final minute featured three lead changes before Portageville's Talisa Walker calmly sank a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left to put her team up 57-53 and seal the win.

Kaylee Blue scored five consecutive points in the first quarter to push the Twin Rivers lead to 14-7, but Portageville closed the period with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to two.

Each team turned the ball over 10 times in the first half, but the Lady Bulldogs kept an edge over the Lady Royals by converting at the free throw line.

"We had freshman mistakes by veteran players," Walk said. "We would get the lead, but when we have a one-point lead we just don't play smart."

The Lady Bulldogs took a five-point lead into halftime, 29-24, but the Lady Royals came out determined to climb out of the hole as the second half began.

Carlee Vancil converted a 3-point play just over a minute into the third quarter to bring her team to within a basket at 31-29, and the Lady Royals took advantage of missed opportunities to pull even at 33-33.
